Recently minted undisputed UFC middleweight champion, Alex Pereira has offered to share the Octagon with undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzar Chimaev – at the light heavyweight limit, in a return to his native Brazi to boot.

Taking main event status at UFC 281 earlier this month at Madison Square Garden, Pereira managed to clinch the undisputed middleweight championship – stopping arch-rival, Israel Adesanya with a rallying fith round standing TKO victory.

Off the back of the victory, Pereira was linked with a future title fight against the undefeated, Chimaev, with the Chechen-born contender offering to make a stunning quickfire turnaround and fight the Sao Paulo native at UFC 282 later this month in ‘Sin City’.

Khamzat Chimaev has been offered a light heavyweight clash by Alex Pereira

Offering to make a fight with Chimaev a reality should the AllStars MMA staple remain keen on a matchup, Pereira, a former two-weight GLORY Kickboxing champion, has offered to make a light heavyweight return in a Brazil homecoming against Chimaev at UFC 283 in January.

“Okay, number one, he (Alex Pereira) said he’ll fight (Khamzat) Chimaev in Rio at light heavyweight, right,” Alex Pereira told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour through an interpreter. “Not a problem for him – number two, I think Brendan Schaub was running his mouth, you know, I don’t even wanna translate.”

“So, here’s the deal, he’ll fight Chimaev in Rio at 205 (pounds), and he proposes to do a bet with Schaub.” Alex Pereira said. “$50,000 if he beats Chimaev. If we both go, and those 50k from both sides, we donate to kids in aid. Also, 50 more ($50,000) that he (Chimaev) will not take him down in 30 seconds, to donate to the charity too.”

Despite urging Adesanya to think about some time off following his knockout defeat in New York City earlier this month, Pereira insists if the City Kickboxing trainee wants to fight him next, he will oblige in an immediate title re-run.

Alex Pereira reveals he was ‘Scared’ to fight Sean Strickland: “I thought ‘This guy wants to kill me.’”

UFC middleweight champion Alex Pereira has admitted he was scared to face Sean Strickland at UFC 276.

Pereira recently capture the UFC’s 185lb title, KOing long-time rival Israel Adesanya in the final round at UFC 281. Prior to that fight, Adesanya was undefeated at middleweight, having cleared out the majority of the division. However, Pereira has revealed that his fight with Sean Strickland ‘scared’ him considerably more than the bout with ‘The Last Stylebender.’

In a recent interview with So Papos MMA, ‘Poatan’ was open about his emotions in the build to the fight with Strickland, stating:

“Talking about my last fight, [Strickland] had 25 fights, was doing well in the UFC, ranked No. 4 in the middleweight rankings, he’s dangerous, he’s experienced. I was scared, but when I heard him talk, I relaxed a little bit. He is a good fighter and an experienced one, but he was talking some stuff that didn’t make any sense.”

For a few months since the fight was booked I had fear, but it was under control. But I’ll tell you when I was the most afraid. Everything he said and up until the weigh-in, everything was fine. When he entered the octagon and started staring at me, he hadn’t looked at me that way before. That was when I became scared.”

“He’s another person inside the Octagon, different from his normal personality,” Alex Pereira continued. “I thought ‘This guy wants to kill me’ I’m telling you, this was a different guy from everything else. But in the end it was good that he entered the octagon this way, because it woke me up, I became aware of the danger, I knew I couldn’t make mistakes. I said damn, he’s different in here, you have to be careful with this man. I went in smarter and managed to catch him.” (H/T MMA Mania)

Alex Pereira was clearly able to overcome his fear, knocking Strickland out in the first round with his signature left hook. It would be this exact same technique that ‘Poatan’ would use to begin the finishing sequence against Adesanya at UFC 281.

Now the UFC middleweight champ, despite only holding a record of 7-1, Pereira is likely set for a rematch with Adesanya, although the likes of Khamzat Chimaev are already calling out the new champ.

Darren Till likens Alex Pereira’s devastating KO power to that of the late Anthony Johnson

Darren Till has compared Alex Pereira’s punching power to that of the late Anthony Johnson following his UFC 281 victory over Israel Adesanya.

Johnson was renowned for his devastating knockout power which saw him TKO/KO 17 opponents throughout the 23 wins he amassed over the course of his career.

In a similar manner to which Johnson could shut the lights out of his opponents, new middleweight champion, Alex Pereira, carries the same venom in his hands. 3 of his 4 victories have come via TKO or KO since signing with the promotion. Most notably Pereira’s devastating power saw him become the first person to finish Israel Adesanya inside an MMA octagon en route to his title success at UFC 281.

Taking note of the devastating power the new champion has is fellow middleweight contender, Darren Till. Speaking to Michael Bisping on an episode of the ‘Believe You Me’ podcast, Darren Till related the power of Pereira to that of the late, great, Anthony Johnson:

“I think Pereira is a big, strong, massive, slow middleweight,” Till said. “He’s slow, his strikes aren’t devastatingly fast, but my God, does that man carry power. I think I’m two times, three times faster than him — Adesanya as well — but he just needs to land.

“It’s like, rest in peace, I don’t even want to say his name because it’s a very sad [time], but Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson, I want to give my condolences, but I’m actually going to give the example of him because he is the best example of it: That man only had to touch a little finger on your head and you’d be knocked out. I think Pereira has that type of thing.”

Darren Till Begins Title Resurgence At UFC 282 Against Driscus Du Plessis

Liverpool’s own, Darren Till, will begin his own resurgence toward the middleweight title when he faces up-and-coming contender, Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 282.

A long way from the top as the former welterweight title challenger looks to improve upon his past form, Till knows the challenges he faces once he gets there. Despite Pereira having taken out of the most dominant champions the middleweight division has seen in recent times, ‘The Gorilla’ still believes the new champion would have a difficult task at hand if he were to take on either Khamzat Chimaev or his previous opponent, Robert Whittaker.

“He’s young in the sport, but I saw Khamzat call him out and I was like, ‘Khamzat would definitely take him down within 30 seconds,’ yeah, it’s a fight, but that’s not a fight Pereira is ready for,” Till said.

“And Whittaker doesn’t just wrestle, he uses his strikes in his wrestling. He did that to me in the fifth round. We went four rounds of just making each other twitch, and then in the fifth round he used strikes into a takedown to get me. At that time, I couldn’t be taken down. I think he’d still have some trouble with Pereira because Pereira is quite strong.” (Transcribed by MMAFighting)

UFC color commentator, Joe Rogan has certainly hyped up newly minted undisputed middleweight champion, Alex Pereira – making the case that the Brazilian may have surpassed former two-weight UFC champion and Olympic gold medalist, Henry Cejudo in many’s eyes, as the best combat sports athlete ever.

Pereira, who headlined UFC 281 earlier this month at Madison Square Garden against two-time GLORY Kickboxing rival, Israel Adesanya – clinched the undisputed middleweight crown with a stunning fifth round standing TKO victory.

Rallying after dropping three of the opening four rounds against Nigerian-Kiwi striker, Adesanya, Alex Pereira managed to stun the City Kickboxing mainstay at the fence in the final frame, dropping the champion with a left hook before scoring a standing technical knockout win to win the undisputed middleweight crown.

Arriving in mixed martial arts back in 2015, Alex Pereira has so far established a 7-1 professional record, transitioning to the sport following a decorated kickboxing career, which saw him mint himself as the undisputed middleweight and light heavyweight champion under the GLORY Kickboxing banner.

Joe Rogan heaps praise on Brazilian finisher, Alex Pereira

Comparing the resumes of both Pereira, and former flyweight and bantamweight UFC champion, Cejudo during a recent podcast appearance with Sean O’Malley on The Joe Rogan Experience, long-time promotional color-commentator, Rogan questioned if Pereira now laid claim to the status of greatest combat sports athlete ever.

“Yeah, he (Henry Cejudo) won the gold medal in the Olympics,” Joe Rogan said. “However, (Alex) Pereira, when he was fighting in GLORY (Kickboxing) – he’s fighting elite professionals, you know where, Henry is wrestling amateurs.”

Expected to make his first attempted defense of the middleweight title in an immediate title rematch with Adesanya last year, Pereira has scored other stunning knockout wins over Sean Strickland, and Andreas Michailidis during his Octagon tenure – sandwiched between a decision win against compatriot, Bruno Silva.

Newly minted undisputed UFC middleweight champion, Alex Pereira has claimed that if former titleholder, Israel Adesanya actually wants to share the Octagon with him in a title rematch next, he will welcome the opportunity to fight him again, although advises him to take some time away from the sport.

Headlining UFC 281 earlier this month against the Nigerian-Kiwi, Pereira managed to scoop the undisputed middleweight crown with a rallying win over Adesanya, stopping the defending champion in the fifth round with a standing TKO win

Off the back of the stunning victory, which came as Pereira’s third over Adesanya in their respective combat sports careers amid a pair of triumphs in professional kickboxing, the duo both welcomed an immediate championship rematch under the UFC banner.

Alex Pereira welcomes a title re-run with Israel Adesanya next

Welcoming that rematch next, Pereira admitted Adesanya likely earned a shot at reclaiming his throne immediately, however, urged him to have a good think about the potential scenario.

“It makes no difference to me if it’s him [Israel Adesanya] or another guy,” Alex Pereira told ESPN Brazil. “If I were him, though, I’d say, ‘I’m not fighting right now. I’m going to wait a little, think about what I’m going to do’. Since he wants it, though, I mean, he used to be the champion. If he really wants it, he has earned the right because he has five title defenses.”

“We had a good fight,” Alex Pereira said. “He did catch me at one point, so he believes he can beat me. It doesn’t matter to me. I’ll fight him, that’s no problem. If there are two guys. Adesanya and some other guy. I’d pick Adesanya, if I’m being honest. I’m not picking another guy just not to give Adesanya the chance. If he really wants it, then he’s next.” (Transcribed by Bloody Elbow)

The newly crowned middleweight champion, Alex Pereira, has revealed an injury he suffered in the running to his successful title challenge at UFC 281.

Pereira was able to achieve something that many had not even come close to in the middleweight division when he finished then 185-pound champion, Israel Adesanya. The Brazilian was down on all of the judges’ scorecards when he finally landed the devastating combination that saw him TKO ‘The Last Stylebender’.

Despite ultimately setting out and achieving what he aimed for, the former kickboxing world champion has revealed it was not all plain sailing during his training camp for UFC 281. Pereira detailed an injury he suffered to his hand whilst training when speaking in an interview with ESPN.

“I didn’t train very well for this fight. I could have been better,” Pereira said. “But I won, I became champion. A lot of people talk nonsense and don’t know what was going on. I [tore] the ligaments. I think I can come back better for this next fight.”

Alex Pereira Touches on A 4th Fight with Israel Adesanya

Injuries were unable to prevent Alex Pereira from becoming an MMA world champion and beating Israel Adesanya for the third time and the Brazilian fully expects to see his familiar foe inside an octagon once again.

“It doesn’t matter to me whether he or another will come,” Alex Pereira continued. “If I were him, I would wait a bit, but since he wants to … he was the champion. If he really wants that, he deserves this rematch. It was a good fight. He hit me, he believes he can beat me. It doesn’t matter to me, I’ll fight. If there are two people, Adesanya and someone else, and you say who I want, I’ll say ‘Adesanya.’ Because he is him.” (Transcribed by BJPenn.com)

An immediate rematch only seems fair given the length of time Adesanya reigned at the top of the division, the questions still remain will he want to jump back in there straight away with a man who has defeated him on three separate occasions already?

If Israel Adesanya doesn’t wish to face Alex Pereira again straight away, who would you like to see the new middleweight champion make his first defense against?
