Dominance MMA leader and prominent mixed martial arts manager, Ali Abdelaziz has touted his client, reigning UFC lightweight champion, Israel Makhachev as a potential future three-weight Octagon titleholder, claiming he would defeat welterweight best, Leon Edwards, as well as middleweight champion, Alex Pereira if afforded the opportunity.

Clinching the vacant UFC lightweight title last month in Abu Dhabi, UAE – Makhachev defeated former lightweight best, Charles Oliveira with a second round arm-triangle choke on ‘Fight Island’.

Already booked for his first title defense atop the lightweight pile, Makhachkala native, Makhachev is set to headline UFC 284 in February in the promotion’s return to Perth, Australia – headlining against featherweight best, Alexander Volkanovski.

And amid his dominant run through the lightweight ranks, Makhachev has been tipped to add not just one, but two championships to his trophy cabinet during his time with the UFC.

“Islam (Makachev), I can see him becoming a three-division champion, I really do,” Ali Abdelaziz told John Morgan. “You tell me Islam Makhachev, he cannot beat Leon Edwards right now? He can. You tell me Islam Makhachev can’t beat Alex Pereira? No, he can. Islam Makhachev can be a three-division champion.”

Headlining UFC 277 back in July, the above-mentioned, Edwards stopped then-champion, Kamaru Usman with a fifth round high-kick knockout in the pair’s rematch – rallying to win the crown.

For Pereira, the Sao Paulo native managed to scoop the undisputed middleweight crown with a stunning fifth round standing TKO knockout over former kickboxing rival, Israel Adesanya earlier this month at UFC 281 at Madison Square Garden.

As part of his eye-catching winning run at lightweight, Makhachev has landed consecutive victories over the likes of Bobby Green, Drew Dober, Dan Hooker, Thiago Moises, Davi Ramos, and Arman Tsarukyan.

Sean O’Malley backs Khamzat Chimaev against Alex Pereira: “He can knock motherf*ckers out”

Khamzat Chimaev

Khamzat Chimaev made waves on Twitter when he revealed that he had accepted a short-notice fight with newly crowned UFC middleweight champion Alex Pereira.

With Pereira fresh off his shocking fifth-round knockout of Israel Adesanya at UFC 281, it seemed highly unlikely that he would be ready to go on such short notice, making a quick turnaround to compete at UFC 282 on December 10th. Especially against an opponent as formidable as Khamzat Chimaev. However, the recent revelation that Jiri Prochazka is out of the previously scheduled UFC 282 main event led some to speculate the UFC was attempting to make a massive middleweight title fight between the two behemoths in place of the light heavyweight title rematch.

UFC fan favorite Sean O’Malley shared his thoughts on the hypothetical pairing through his YouTube channel. The No. 1 ranked bantamweight contender is confidently backing Khamzat Chimaev, believing his grappling and power would be enough to take out Alex Pereira.

“Khamzat could f**k Alex up… That left hand is nasty, but if I had to put money on Alex vs. Khamzat I’d put it on Khamzat… He can grapple big scary guys like that. I’d put money on Khamzat if they fought… His grappling is good, and he can knock motherf***ers out,” O’Malley said.

Khamzat Chimaev vs. Alex Pereira Unlikely as the UFC Promotes Blachowicz vs. Ankalaev to Main Event

Fans immediately began salivating over the potential of a surprise showdown between Khamzat Chimaev and Alex Pereira, though the bout seems unlikely to happen anytime soon, if ever. The UFC may have looked into the possibility as a knee-jerk reaction to Jiri Prochazka’s withdrawal from the event but with the event roughly two weeks out, it seems that the promotion has moved onto another plan.

Following the announcement that Prochazka had withdrawn and vacated his UFC light heavyweight championship, the promotion promoted Jan Blachowicz vs. Magomed Ankalaev to the main event slot. The two will now compete for the vacant 205-pound title.

As for Sean O’Malley, the outspoken striker is coming off the biggest win of his career, scoring a split-decision victory over Petr Yan. The victory extended his win streak to four and improved his overall UFC record to 8-1. Now sitting at No. 1 in the bantamweight rankings, O’Malley is eyeing a fight with the returning ‘Triple C’ Henry Cejudo or a title opportunity against reigning division champion, Aljamain Sterling.

Brendan Schaub on Joe Rogan’s “sanctioned cheating” comments surrounding Alex Pereira’s weight cutting: “I wouldn’t call it cheating”

Brendan SchaubBrendan Schaub doesn’t support Joe Rogan’s claim that Alex Pereira’s drastic weight-cutting is “sanctioned cheating”.  On The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan spoke to Steve-O about Pereira’s revelation that he was 220 pounds on fight day. That is a 35-pound gain in weight between weigh-ins and fight night.  “He could have been, yeah,” Rogan said. “He […]

Brendan Schaub doesn’t support Joe Rogan’s claim that Alex Pereira’s drastic weight-cutting is “sanctioned cheating”.

On The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan spoke to Steve-O about Pereira’s revelation that he was 220 pounds on fight day. That is a 35-pound gain in weight between weigh-ins and fight night.

He could have been, yeah,” Rogan said. “He certainly gets above that between fights and he has a hard time making 185. It’s a bull***t thing. It’s basically sanctioned cheating. It really is, but everybody does it.” (h/t MMAMania

Rogan believes constant weight-cutting can lead to problems for Pereira. He says his big size difference compared to other middleweights can actually hinder his abilities inside the octagon.

He’s so big for the weight class, which really wears you out, that weight cut,” Rogan said “It’s a big weight cut and with wrestling, he’s going to have issues because he’s not a grappler. That’s not his forte. He’s getting better at grappling, but when [Israel Adesanya] takes you to the ground and…controls you, that’s not his forte either.”

At UFC 281, Israel Adesanya, who is known as an elite striker, showcased his wrestling against Pereira. He secured the first takedown in his UFC career and had more control time compared to his opponent.

Brendan Schaub Doesn’t Agree With Joe Rogan

On his podcast, Schaub spoke about Rogan’s comments. He disagrees with the long-time UFC commentator and believes Pereira’s weight difference can actually give him an upper hand in a five-round fight.”

It can be an advantage. Especially if you’re good at it,” Schaub said. “I wouldn’t call it cheating. They literally weighed the same on the scale, and then he balloons back up. That’s what makes Pereira kind of special. He can cut that weight and still have cardio for five rounds.”

Pereira defeated long-time rival Adesanya for the middleweight title. It seemed that Adesanya was going to win until the final round. In comeback fashion, Pereira pressured the former champion against the fence and threw vicious combinations to end the fight. The comeback victory was similar to their 2017 kickboxing match. Pereira now has an MMA and two kickboxing victories over Adesanya.
