Tristar MMA head coach, Firas Zahabi has shared his thoughts on last weekend’s much-discussed UFC 281 headlining stoppage, claiming newly minted undisputed middleweight champion, Alex Pereira could have ended the career of Israel Adesanya had referee, Marc Goddard elected against intervening.

Taking main event honors at the Madison Square Garden event, Adesanya suffered a fifth round standing TKO loss to Brazilian challenger and past kickboxing rival, Pereira.

Falling to an onslaught of strikes at the Octagon fence from Sao Paulo finisher, Pereira in the final round of their main event bout, Adesanya was wobbled with an uppercut and then felled with the latter’s patented left hook.

Returning to his feet in a bid to evade Pereira’s slew of follow-up strikes, Adesanya failed to evade the majority of the blows coming in his direction, with referee, Goddard calling a halt to the action, resulting in an immediate protest from Adesanya.

In the hours following the main event clash, Israel Adesanya claimed that he was not unhappy with the stoppage issued from Goddard. And according to Zahabi, the Nigerian-Kiwi should likely count himself lucky Pereira didn’t end his career in mixed martial arts entirely.

“(Alex) Pereira could have very possibly ended (Israel) Adesanya’s career if the referee did not intervene,” Firas Zahabi said on his YouTube channel. “Guys, if the referee did not intervene, a scissor knee was coming. Guys, the greatest scissor knee I have seen in all of combat sports ever, is Alex Pereira. …”

“It’s an incredible knee from a giant, who’s incredibly explosive,” Firas Zahabi explained. “He throws it incredibly quick. I thought when Adesanya was dazed like that, the knee was coming. If Marc Goddard did not step in, it could have been a serious concussion, broken ajw, broken orbital, fractured skull even. It could have been something that ruined or ended Adesanya’s professional career. So I’m very grateful that Marc Goddard stopped it.”

Israel Adesanya chases immediate rematch with Alex Pereira

Off the back of his undisputed middleweight title loss, Israel Adesanya maintained he will score an immediate rematch with Pereira in his Octagon return, regardless if a championship is on the line or not.

Just a few days into his UFC middleweight title reign, Alex Pereira has already earned himself another belt.

As reported by MMA journalist Ariel Helwani on Twitter, Pereira received his Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt from coach Plinio Cruz just three days removed from his shocking fifth-round finish of former middleweight king Israel Adesanya at UFC 281 on Saturday night.

“New UFC middleweight champ Alex Pereira was awarded his BJJ brown belt by his coach Plinio Cruz last night.”

The news was immediately met with skepticism by fans who quickly referenced Islam Makhachev’s comments to Daniel Cormier regarding the way BJJ black belts are seemingly handed out like candy on Halloween to some of MMA’s top stars.

We have to cancel many black belts [because] they make Jiu-Jitsu look bad,” said Makhachev. “Because a lot of guys have black belt but I don’t know [if they have the skills].

Love him or hate him, Alex Pereira is a bonafide belt collector. Under the GLORY Kickboxing banner, where he defeated Adesanya twice prior to their UFC 281 clash, Pereira was a two-division champion. Today, he is a UFC champion having defeated one of the most celebrated titleholders in the promotion’s history over the weekend.

The Brazilian kickboxer even commemorated his historic title win on Saturday night by getting a UFC championship belt tattooed on his arm. Pereira shared a video clip of the work being done on Instagram.

Daniel Cormier insists Israel Adesanya should be allowed an immediate rematch with Alex Pereira

Former UFC champion Daniel Cormier believes there should be no question on whether Israel Adesanya should get an immediate rematch.

At UFC 281, Adesanya was brutally TKO’d by Alex Pereira in the final round of their bout, ending his three-year reign as champion.

This would mark Adesanya’s third loss to Pereira across MMA and kickboxing, the last two of which ended by knockout.

Daniel Cormier said on his RC&DC show that Adesanya should be fighting Pereira straight away, regardless of past results.

Well, if you are team Adesanya, you don’t want [the fight] to go any differently outside of the ending because he was fighting well,” Cormier said. “It’s not like he was getting beat. He has not been washed out in any of these fights. Most thought he won the first fight [in kickboxing], and believed that he got robbed.

“Yes, immediate rematch!” Cormier argued. “If Israel Adesanya doesn’t get an immediate rematch, then who does? Adesanya’s defended the belt six times! He was on a twelve-fight win streak to start his middleweight career in the UFC. He has earned, if anyone has earned, an immediate rematch. It’s this guy.”

Cormier would raise the valid point that no one questioned whether Kamaru Usman deserved an immediate title shot when he lost to Leon Edwards.

No one questioned whether Usman was going to get a rematch,” Cormier said. “It was like, ‘Well, when is Usman going to get a rematch?’ It’s ultimately when he decides he wants to fight Leon Edwards again, or when Leon Edwards is ready. It should be the same case for Adesanya. Adesanya has done way too much in this game to have to rebuild and fight someone else.

I don’t know if you benefit from putting these two dudes against other people because I truly do believe there are very difficult match ups for Alex Pereira that weren’t difficult for Israel Adesanya.” (H/T MMAMania)

Whilst former undisputed UFC middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker believes he matches up well with newly minted division champion, Alex Pereira following his ascension to the throne at UFC 281 last weekend, the sheer stature and physique of the Brazilian left the ex-champion in awe.

Whittaker, the #2 ranked middleweight contender, held the undisputed middleweight title back in 2017 after he was promoted in Georges St-Pierre – defeating Yoel Romero in a Fight of the Year rematch during his time as division outlier.

Co-headlining UFC Fight Night Paris earlier this year against one-time title challenger, Marvin Vettori in France, Whittaker rebounded from a second career loss to Adesanya earlier this year – turning in a dominant striking performance to defeat the Italian over the course of three rounds.

Set to return to the Octagon on February 11. next at UFC 284 in Perth, Australia – Whittaker will draw Brazilian phenom, Paulo Costa, in what could spell a title-eliminator at 185lbs for both division contenders.

Robert Whittaker previews a future fight with UFC champion, Alex Pereira

Sharing his reaction to Adesanya’s stunning fifth round knockout loss to Sao Paulo finisher, Pereira during a live stream with UFC alum, Jens Pulver, Whittaker commented on a potential fight with the new champion this week, noting the Brazilian’s stunning stature at middleweight.

“Like I said before, I’m not planning past (Paulo) Costa, but I can say that I think (Alex) Pereira is a better matchup for me than Israel (Adesanya),” Robert Whittaker told assembled media at a UFC 284 press conference. “Just ‘cause of the way he stands, and he likes to push forward – the way he likes to fight, I feel, it gives me a better edge.”

“But in saying that, did you see the size of the fella?” Robert Whittaker continued. “Like, why is nobody mentioning that? Dude’s – dude is just giant. He’s an absolute giant. … You see Pereira up against him (Adesanya), and just his facial features are bigger, his feet and hands, and forearms are massive. I’m just thinking – who let this guy in? But still, I think I can take him.”

While Whittaker appears confident of securing a title win against Pereira, the newly minted titleholder is widely expected to provide Adesanya an immediate undisputed title rematch in their next Octagon appearances, respectively.
