Former UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski is envisioning a strong return to competition for his teammate and friend Israel Adesanya later this month.

Adesanya hasn’t competed since losing the middleweight title in surprising fashion against Sean Strickland last September at UFC 293 in Sydney. He subsequently pointed to a high level of activity when announcing plans for an extended layoff.

That break comes to an end in less than two weeks’ time, with “The Last Stylebender” set for the chance to achieve three-time champ status when he returns to action back on Australian soil.

At UFC 305 on August 17, Perth’s RAC Arena will play host to Adesanya’s comeback fight opposite reigning 185-pound kingpin Dricus Du Plessis.

The South African has continued to prove his detractors wrong on MMA’s biggest stage, first by earning top contender status with a win over Robert Whittaker last year and then by dethroning Strickland this past January in Canada.

In Adesanya, though, Volkanovski thinks “Stillknocks” will arrive at a hurdle too tall…

Volkanovski Predicts ‘Incredible’ Comeback Performance For Adesanya

During an interview with talkSPORT MMA while in Manchester for UFC 304 late last month, Volkanovski looked ahead to the promotion’s next numbered event, which takes place in his home country Down Under.

“Alexander the Great,” an occasional teammate of Adesanya’s at City Kickboxing in New Zealand, is expecting the former two-time champ to have gold wrapped around his waist to close out the card on August 17.

And to do so, Volkanovski is predicting the kind of performance that Adesanya put in to claim the title for the first time in 2019 and record his second defense a year later.

“We’re gonna see him coming back; I think he’s gonna look incredible,” Volkanovski said. “Dricus is a tough guy, great fighter. But I think this Israel that’s gonna turn up is gonna be one of those — you know, when he comes back and you see a Paulo Costa performance, or even the first Robert Whittaker performance.”

With talk of a bulked-up physique and improvements behind closed doors since returning to training earlier this year, Adesanya will look to show that he’s got plenty left in the tank by returning to the middleweight throne in emphatic fashion.

While Arnold Allen is preparing for the biggest fight of his life against Max Holloway in April, he made the time to appear in an interview with Lowkick MMA’s Mike Owens and give his prediction on the Alexander Volkanovski vs. Yair Rodriguez fight.

Undefeated in the UFC, ‘Almighty’ has left a swath of carnage in his wake as he’s rapidly progressed up the UFC totem pole. Now scheduled to face divisional legend Max Holloway, Arnold Allen is on the cusp of earning his first title shot with a win over him.

Making the time to speak with Mike Owens, Allen discussed his upcoming fight and his reaction to the fight offer and even touched on such topics as the upcoming battle between Volkanovski and Rodriguez.

Arnold Allen breaks down the upcoming Alexander Volkanovski and Yair Rodriguez fight

When asked about Rodriguez’s chances of beating Volkanovski, Arnold Allen detailed them exquisitely. “I wouldn’t favor him (Yair Rodriguez)…” Allen began. “But, he’s like a grenade, ya know. If you wrestle him, he’s got something anywhere. If you hold on to him, he’s throwing elbows. He’s got good submissions. He’s very explosive with his hips. If you sit in his guard, he’s elbowing you, and he’s throwing triangles up. And if you stand in front of him, there’s always a chance of a knee or elbow at any point of the round…”

“I wouldn’t want to bet against him,” Arnold Allen continued. “But, it’s hard to bet against Volk. It’s a good fight. Knowing Volkanovski, he’ll probably outwork him… shut him down, and cancel him out. But you’re not gonna not get marked up against him (Yair Rodriguez).”

Later asked which fighter he believed he would match up better with, ‘Almighty’ chose Alexander Volkanovski. Saying the height difference and stylistic matchup is more preferable for him than if he were to face Rodriguez. Regardless, with a win over Max Holloway in April, Allen would undoubtedly be facing the winner of Volkanovski vs. Rodriguez next.

What’s your prediction for the Volkanovski vs. Rodriguez fight?

Conor McGregor

It seems Conor McGregor believes Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski have left much to be desired by their performances at UFC 284.

In a highly competitive war, both Makhachev and Volkanovski put it all on the line inside the octagon. Volkanovski moved up to 155lbs for the title fight for the chance to become a prestigious double champion. Makhachev would not be having it, and he endured what was arguably his toughest battle in order to retain his lightweight championship.

While media, fans, and fellow fighters believed the fight was a thrilling brawl, Conor McGregor seemed to think otherwise. Unimpressed; he let his emotions be known in a now-deleted tweet.

Conor McGregor scoffs at the efforts of Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski

“Pound for pound wafflers,” McGregor’s now-deleted Tweet said. Clearly, the ‘Notorious’ wasn’t too keen on the events that transpired at UFC 284. However, he also wasn’t too keen on it beforehand, either. In another Tweet before the event, McGregor posted a picture of both fighters, titles on their arms. “My two old belts. On two little ticks. This fight does 10 buys.”

While once a true double champ in his own right, the years haven’t been kind to Conor McGregor. After failing to defeat Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, it’s been a ‘Notorious’ downward spiral ever since. He came back for an easy win against Donald Cerrone in a very obvious “gimme fight” and has since lost twice to Dustin Poirier. Now, he’s looking to return from his injury suffered in the trilogy bout with Poirier against Michael Chandler.

The two fighters are allegedly coaching on opposite sides of one another on the UFC’s latest upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter, where they will square up and throw down in a no doubt gigantic PPV set to take place soon after the entirety of the season airs.

Are you looking forward to Conor McGregor’s return to the UFC?

Alex Volkanovski wants to test Islam Makhachev’s striking: ‘He’s supposed to be well rounded’

Alex Volkanovski, Islam Makhachev

Alex Volkanovski will challenge Islam Makhachev‘s striking abilities in their nearing bout at UFC 284.

Reigning featherweight champion Volkanovski is set to take on lightweight champion Makhachev in the promotion’s return to Australia on Feb. 11. He will look to get entry into the ultra-exclusive ‘champ-champ’ club, inaugurated by former two-division champion Conor McGregor, against an adversary who competes in a division ten pounds heavier than his.

Alex Volkanovski will test Islam Makhachev’s striking

In a recent interview with Laura Sanko, Alex Volkanovski shared his thoughts on his upcoming ‘double-champ’ fight with Makhachev.

“I think, obviously strategy and all that goes a long way and I’m very hard to hold down so I’m expecting a stand-up battle,” he said (ht Middle Easy). “Let’s see how good his striking is, he’s supposed to be well rounded so we’ll see.”

‘The Great’ is coming off a dominant win over former champion Max Holloway in July at UFC 276. He extended his unbeaten run in the promotion and put a decisive end to his rivalry with Holloway in the trilogy bout. He secured the top pound-for-pound spot after former welterweight king Kamaru Usman got dethroned by Leon Edwards in August at UFC 278.

Volkanovski likes being the underdog

Volkanovski enters the bout as the betting underdog, with some concerns about the disparity in grappling abilities between the two. He talked about the motivation he gains from people doubting him against Makhachev.

“I was always the one that they, all these big fellas had to keep an eye on because I was the one that was running straight through and dumping them on their head,” he said. “So we’ll see what happens fight night. I’m hoping people doubt me because I love being the underdog. I’m sure I’m gonna be the underdog, well, again, I hope. I can’t wait to go out there and prove people wrong because that just really fires me up.”

Alex Volkanovski Hasbulla Burger Prank

After taking a burger to the face while sharing a meal with Hasbulla, Alex Volkanovski and the MMA social media sensation have come under fire.

In an episode of Cooking with Volk, the UFC featherweight champion and Hasbulla were whipping it up in the kitchen and fixing some delicious-looking burgers to enjoy. The two could be seen chopping up cucumbers and tomatoes, as well as adding an assortment of spices into a tea pitcher to create a “secret sauce”.

At the end of the episode, the duo sat down to enjoy the burgers. Hasbulla would eventually stand up and smash his into Volkanovski’s face in what was a light-hearted and funny moment, which would surprisingly trigger a lot of negativity towards Hasbulla from fans.

Alex Volkanovski admits to planning the Hasbulla burger incident

Appearing on The MMA Hour, Alex Volkanovski seemed surprised the prank caused so much backlash for Hasbulla. Wanting to clear the air, he would admit it was all staged.

“I’ll be straight-up with this. Everyone does the Hasbulla thing and then obviously gets punched in the face and all that type of stuff,” Volkanovski began. “So, this was actually planned. I planned this just for a bit of a laugh.”

“The reason why I’m bringing this up,” Alex Volkanovksi continued. “Is because he ended up copping a little bit about it, especially with his religion and wasting food and all that type of stuff, things like that.”

“So I felt bad because I put him in that position. I told him with my burger, ‘You can hit there,’ and I ended up eating the burger so it actually didn’t go to waste. You actually see me in the video eating that burger.”

Alex Volkanovski would then go on to claim that he believed a lot of people thought the incident was real because of “how good his acting skills were”.

“I think a lot of people obviously thought it was real because of my acting skills,” He said. “How good was that? Everyone’s like, ‘Oh man, how’d you take that?’ It was planned. Sorry to ruin it for everyone, but I wanted to touch on that because when we’re dealing with Hasbulla and his team, they’re really cool, so I appreciate them doing that. I apologize for them copping a bit of hate about it.”

Volkanovski was last seen at UFC 276 where he picked up yet another decision victory against Max Holloway. Volkanovski has claimed that he’s the backup for the upcoming lightweight title fight between Islam Makhachev and the defending champion Charles Oliveira at UFC 280. Should either man fail to appear, or miss weight, ‘The Great’ expects to step up and try his hand at solidifying himself as one of the few double champions in UFC history.

What do you think about the hate Hasbulla has received for the burger prank, and do you think Alex Volkanovski will have to fill in at UFC 280?
