The UFC made Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson 2 official nearly two weeks ago and now, the high-profile fighters are preparing for the rematch years in the making.

Now it’s time Alexander Gustafsson offers his prediction for his upcoming showdown against the disgraced former UFC light heavyweight champion.

First Fight

The rematch will serve as the headliner of the UFC 232 pay-per-view event. It’s obviously the second coming of their classic first fight at 2013’s UFC 165. Jones successfully retained his light heavyweight title over Gustafsson by unanimous decision.

But that only tells part of the story, as it was an all-out war. Some fight fans still argue that the former title contender may have won the fight.

Last Fights

Since losing to UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier at the UFC 192 pay-per-view event, Gustafsson has won back-to-back fights with a unanimous decision victory over Jan Blachowicz and a thrilling knockout over Glover Teixeira in 2017.

Gustafsson’s Prediction

Now, while preparing for the rematch, the former title contender has made his prediction for the finish of this fight. He believes that the fight will end in the fourth round of the scheduled five-round main event.

Gustafsson not only gave his pick but stated he simply doesn’t have the same respect for Jones that he did in 2013:

“I don’t have the same respect for Jones as I did five years ago,” Gustafsson said in a recent news conference (H/T to Bloody Elbow). “I’ll knock him out in the fourth. Jon Jones’ head will bounce off the canvas in the fourth round.”

It’s an extremely bold prediction from the Swedish “Mauler,” who is seemingly taking a more aggressive stance before the rematch with Jones. He has his work cut out for him, as “Bones” has never been knocked out. He’s only lost once by disqualification in a fight he was winning.

But outside-the-cage issues with a myriad of drugs has his career in a seemingly constant state of limbo. We’ll have to see which version of Jones shows up.

The UFC 232 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

Coach Confirms Jones ‘Didn’t Train Hard’ For First Gustafsson Fight

Jon Jones had the fight of his life at UFC 165 back in September of 2013.

“Bones” successfully defended his then-held light heavyweight title against Alexander Gustafsson via unanimous decision. But it wasn’t pretty.

The Swede brought the fight to Jones unlike anyone before. The fact that “The Mauler” could match Jones in size, something no one else had or has done since was especially helpful. The fight was so close, in fact, that many believe Gustafsson should’ve won the bout. However, Jones retained his title and was victorious.

Talk of a rematch immediately after swirled, but unfortunately, nothing was able to get done. Until now.

Jones and Gustafsson will headline December 29’s UFC 232 for the light heavyweight title. Daniel Cormier currently reigns as the 205-pound champion but will be stripped as soon as the fight begins. Jones is an extremely talented mixed martial artist, and what makes things even crazier about him is he apparently defeated Gustafsson coming off a training camp he didn’t take too seriously.

His coach, Mike Winkeljohn, spoke to “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show” recently and confirmed this. Winkeljohn revealed that Jones “definitely didn’t train hard” for the fight (via Sherdog):

“Oh yeah, there’s no doubt about it. You know what, Jon won the last fight [and] he definitely didn’t train hard for that fight. His mind was elsewhere, I think he took it a little light. Kinda real fascinating how stupid that was because Gustafsson can fight.”

The famous coach admitted Gustafsson is indeed a challenge and they want to make it easier the second time around. He believed it would be a war the first time:

“He’s the real deal and definitely a different look for Jon with his height. This time we’re gonna try to make it a lot easier. I wasn’t doubting he’d beat him, but I knew we were gonna be in for a war.”

Despite that feeling, Winkeljohn ultimately believed in Jones’ ability to overcome adversity, which he did:

“I’m always a believer in Jon Jones’ heart and ability to figure sh*t out and come out on top. I figured it was gonna be one of those rough ones and it was, there’s no doubt about it.

“It was just we had to find a way as a team to help him conserve his energy here and there because he wasn’t in quite the shape he should’ve been in, which played out huge throughout the fight.”

Daniel Cormier may have his hands full with Derrick Lewis next month (Sat. November 3, 2018), but that doesn’t mean he’s not keeping an eye on the light heavyweight division.

Currently, Cormier holds both the light heavyweight and heavyweight titles for the UFC. He is preparing to defend the heavyweight title against Lewis at UFC 230 in Madison Square Garden. While Cormier handles business in the heavyweight division, the 205-pound class will move forward.

It has been announced that the returning Jon Jones will face Alexander Gustafsson for the light heavyweight title. Once the first punch is thrown in the fight, Cormier will be stripped of the 205-pound title. That fight will take place in Las Vegas at UFC 232 on December 29th.

Speaking on “The MMA Hour” recently, Cormier offered his pick for the fight. Despite his heated rivalry with Jon Jones over the years, Cormier picked “Bones” to emerge victorious (via MMA Mania):

“I think Jones wins the fight. I have never once shied away from the fact that he’s a fantastic fighter. He is a really talented guy. He obviously can go with me, keep up with me, he has obviously put in a lot of hard work, so, he must be a hard worker in that sense,” he said.

“I know that Alex, for as good as he is, too, Alex struggles in the big moments. This is a really, really big moment and he is going to have to fight to his level or above his level to try and win.”

Jones and Gustafsson will rematch their initial meeting from 2013. The two main evented UFC 165 and put on one of the best fights in UFC history. Jones took home a controversial unanimous decision win over Gustafsson to retain his then-light heavyweight title.

The two match-up extremely well stylistically, with Gustafsson being one of few men to be able to match Jones’ amazing size and build. After almost six years since fighting, it will be intriguing to see how the fight plays out.
