Former two-time UFC light heavyweight title challenger Alexander Gustafsson’s training camp to fight Glover Teixeira in the main event of May 28’s UFC Fight Night 109 from Stockholm, Sweden, is in full swing.

So much so, apparently, that “The Mauler” accidentally nailed his Coach Andreas in the face with a massive wheel kick during a recent training session.

After the kick found a home on the coach’s chin, he shrugged it off and urged his top-ranked fighter to continue training, much to the surprise of the onlookers. Check it out via Gustafsson’s Facebook page right here:

Alexander Gustafsson is still on the hunt for Jon Jones.

‘The Mauler’ comes off of a unanimous decision win over Jan Blachowicz last September, where he snapped a two-fight losing skid to Anthony Johnson and Daniel Cormier. Feeling revitalized in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career after the win, Gustafsson will now step into the Octagon against UFC veteran Glover Teixeira.

The pair will headline the UFC Fight Night 109 card from Gustasson’s hometown of Stockholm, Sweden on May 28th from the Ericsson Globe arena. Earlier today (Wed. March 29, 2017) a press conference in Sweden was held to promote the event, where Gustafsson was asked about his thoughts on a possible rematch with Jon Jones.

The UFC light heavyweight title will be contested for at UFC 210 between champion Daniel Cormier and No. 1-ranked Anthony Johnson next month (April 10th), and Jones – who is currently serving a one-year suspension from the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) – is likely to get the first crack at the winner. The bout between Gustafsson and Teixeira could very well be heavily involved in the 205-pound title picture moving forward (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“Jones is one of those fights I think everybody wants,” Gustafsson said. “It’s a hard choice because you have the belt, and you have Jones. Jones is a true champ in my eyes (because he never lost the belt in the octagon). There’s no one like him, and to beat him would be as big as being the world champ.”

alexander gustafssonJones and Gustafsson fought in the main event of UFC 165 back in September of 2013. ‘Bones’ won the bout with a heavily controversial unanimous decision, after one of the greatest light heavyweight title fights of all time. They were originally set to rematch at UFC 178, however, Gustafsson was forced out of the bout do to a torn meniscus.

Now the Swede has an opportunity to get himself back in the mix for not only a shot at the 205-pound crown, but redemption against Jones, whom he feels he beat that night in Toronto. Before he begins planning any of that, however, Gustafsson is 100 percent focused on the task at hand, Teixeira:

“I will be the winner of this fight, I can tell you that,” Gustafsson said. “We’ll see what happens. My focus is on Glover right now. That’s a tough challenge for me. I’m going to score that, and we’ll see what happens for me. We’ll move forward.”

Teixeira is fine with the fact that Gustafsson is ultimately gunning for a rematch with Jones, as he would rather focus on becoming the light heavyweight champion of the world:

“Jones is coming back, so who knows (about a title shot),” Teixeira said. “But after I beat Gustafsson I can fight for the title, and Gustafsson can have his rematch with Jones.”

Daniel Cormier Comments On ‘Top Heavy’ Light Heavyweight Division

Daniel Cormier is gearing up to defend his UFC 205-pound title in a rematch against surging No. 1-contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson in the main event of April 8’s UFC 210 from Buffalo, New York, but he isn’t oblivious to the scarcity of the division and the lack of legitimate title threats currently occupying the 205-pound waters.

Aside from Johnson, Cormier feels as if only former champion Jon Jones, who’s currently serving out a suspension, and former title challenger Alexander Gustafsson, who Cormier beat in 2015, can realistically challenge for the title:

“It’s a very top-heavy our division,” Cormier told MMAjunkie Radio this past week. “You have Anthony and myself and Jones when he gets back (from suspension) and Gustafsson, but I just don’t know if the rest of those guys can actually compete. For me, it’s not even about those guys. I’ve got my next three fights mapped out: I’ve got to fight Anthony Johnson, I’ve got to fight and beat Jon Jones and then I have to fight and beat Jon Jones again. Then I will have accomplished everything I could have ever accomplished in the sport of mixed martial arts.”

The light heavyweight division was once the UFC’s marquee division, but it is currently lacking contenders as well as prospects, aside from perhaps 30-year-old Misha Cirkunov, who has compiled a 4-0 record inside the Octagon. Cormier’s focus isn’t lying on the division’s rising contenders, however, as he knows his career doesn’t have many fights left in it:

“I don’t really have to worry too much about Cirkunov, because by the time Cirkunov is ready to fight for a championship my journey may be complete,” Cormier said. “I’m not too worried about those young guys. That’s going to be for the guys that are in their mid-20s and early 30s to worry about. I’m 37, going to be 38 (on) March (20), so I know what I’m doing.”

While he may be nearing the end of the road, “DC” is still set on fighting the best in the world, although he wouldn’t mind if he never had to share the Octagon with Gustafsson again:

“Even though it’s top heavy, my desire is to fight those guys in that very top part of the division. I don’t really have the desire to fight those other guys. I want to fight Jones. I want to fight ‘Rumble.’ I would fight Gustafsson, but would prefer not to because that guy really did take me behind the woodshed last time (we fought at UFC 192). I would prefer not to fight Gustafsson, if I’m going to be honest.”

What are your thoughts on the division and how do you expect Cormier’s rematch with Johnson to play out?

The UFC will be returning to Stockholm, Sweden in a couple of months and they plan on booking a key bout between two of the best light heavyweights in the world for the event. Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting is reporting that the UFC is working on booking Alexander Gustafsson vs. Glover Teixeira for an event in Stockholm in May. As it stands, this fight would be the main event of the show.

If you recall, the light heavyweight contenders were originally scheduled to meet at a Fight Night event in June 2015. However, Gustafsson suffered an injury which forced him out of the fight at the time.

Gustafsson (17-4) recently snapped a two fight losing streak when he beat Jan Blachowicz via unanimous decision in September. He was scheduled to return to action in a fight against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in November but withdrew from the fight due to another injury. On the flip side, Teixeira (26-5) is coming off a win over Jared Cannonier earlier this month at UFC 208.

Although the promotion has yet to officially announce this event which takes place on May 28th, it will mark the promotion’s fifth trip to Stockholm. The promotion will be announcing the event as well as other bouts for it shortly.
