No. 5 ranked contender Ilia Topuria says he, not Alexander Volkanovski, is the greatest featherweight fighter of all time.

Topuria has been riding a massive wave of momentum following his impressive unanimous decision victory over Josh Emmett last month. El Matador’ moved to 6-0 inside the Octagon, 14-0 overall. With the win, Topuria is considered by many to be the next man in line to challenge reigning UFC featherweight world champion, Alexander Volkanovski.

Following Volkanovski’s dominant third-round TKO against interim titleholder Yair Rodriguez at UFC 290, Ilia Topuria engaged in an intense face-off with the ‘The Great’ as the promotion’s latest pay-per-view offering went off the air.

In a brief interview with InsideFighting, Ilia Topuria suggested that he is the greatest fighter in the featherweight division. ‘El Matador’ even went so far as to claim that he can finish Volkanovski any way he chooses, any time he chooses, inside the Octagon.

“I can finish him however I want in the first round. If I want to submit him, I’m going to submit him. If I want to knock him out, I’m going to knock him out,” Topuria said. “I’m the greatest featherweight of all time in front of you right now.”

Ilia Topuria also suggested that his highly anticipated scrap with Alexander Volkanovski could go down this December. No official announcements have been made, but ‘The Great’ has also been linked to a potential lightweight title rematch with Islam Makhachev in October when the promotion returns to Abu Dhabi.

Entering the promotion in 2020, Topuria has curated an impressive resume for himself, scoring wins against Youssef Zalal, Damon Jackson, Ryan Hall, Jai Herbert, Bryce Mitchell, and the aforementioned Josh Emmett.

With Volkanovski’s impressive victory against Yair Rodriguez on Saturday night, ‘The Great’ has returned to the top of the pound-for-pound rankings, sharing the top spot with two-division titleholder Jon ‘Bones’ Jones.

Alexander Volkanovski branded most unbeatable fighter in the world UFC 290 title win

Off the back of his stunning UFC 290 title unification win over former interim titleholder, Yair Rodríguez over the course of the weekend, undisputed featherweight kingpin, Alexander Volkanovski has been branded the “most unbeatable guy in the world” by lightweight veteran, Michael Chandler.

Volkanovski, the current undisputed featherweight champion, also landed as the pound-for-pound number one fighter under the organization’s banner following UFC 290 – seated next to his heavyweight titleholder counterpart, Jon Jones.

Turning in a vintage display during his International Fight Week main event clash with Mexican striker, Rodríguez, Volkanovski defeated the Chihuahua challenger with a third round finishing sequence, laying waste to the former with a slew of ground strikes.

Striking his fifth successful title defense with his stoppage success, Volkanovski, who has welcomed both a lightweight title re-run with Islam Makhachev, as well as a featherweight stay against Georgian talent, Ilia Topuria, the Australian has been showered in praise by ex-Bellator gold holder, Chandler, off the back of UFC 290.

“Is Alexander Volkanovski unbeatable?” Michael Chandler asked on his YouTube channel. “Alexander ‘The Great’ ist just that. I break it down to three C’s why I think Alexander Volkanovski is the most unbeatable – not just unbeatable champion, but the most unbeatable guy in the entire world. There’s a reason why’s the pound-for-pound number one.”

“I break it downt o three C’s,” Chandler explained. “Completeness, cardio, and composure. He is the most complete fighter that we have on the roster in the UFC. The most complete fighter in the entire world. The ability to be at home and be two to three to four steps ahead of his opponents in every single position in a fight. On the feet, navigating and negotiating the distance. Navigating and negotiating the striking. His plethora of strikes that he has. Very basic. He doesn’t try to get crazy out of his comfort zone even with how dominant he has been.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Alexander Volkanovski pound for pound one spot alongside Jon Jones UFC 290 title win

Off the back of his fifth successful title defense over the weekend at UFC 290 in his title unification win over Yair Rodríguez, Alexander Volkanovski has once more landed as the number one ranked pound-for-pound fighter under the promotion’s banner – landing beside heavyweight kingpin, Jon Jones.

Headlining at UFC 290 over the course of the weekend during International Fight Week, Alexander Volkanovski managed to successfully unify the featherweight titles against interim gold holder, Rodríguez, defeating the Mexican striker with a slew of third round ground strikes.

The victory propelled Alexander Volkanovski back to the winner’s enclosure following a unanimous decision loss to undisputed lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev in an unsuccessful title challenge back in February in Perth, Australia atop a UFC 294 pay-per-view card.

Alexander Volkanovski reclaims top slot in the pound-for-pound rankings

And furthermore, last weekend’s stoppage win over Rodríguez, has one resulted in Volkanovski’s ascension to the number one slot in the pound-for-pound rankings – alongside current heavyweight kingpin, Jones, in the latest rankings update released this morning

In other notable movement in the rankings, event co-headliner, Alexandre Pantoja debuted in the pound-for-pound pile at number nine – having clinched undisputed flyweight gold in a close, split decision win over Brandon Moreno.

At the middleweight limit, surging South African contender, Dricus du Plessis is also now the official number one ranked contender, usurping both Alex Pereira, and opponent, Robert Whittaker – following his devastating second round TKO win. du Plessis is in turn, expected to fight champion, Israel Adesanya at UFC 293 in September in Sydney, Australia.

In the official lightweight pile, Dan Hooker returns to the divisional top-10 for the first time since 2020, having turned in his second consecutive victory in a hard-fought decision win over New Zealand boogeyman, Jalin Turner in an instant classic on the main card.

Alexander Volkanovski optimistic of Islam Makahchev rematch at UFC 294 in October

Even though Alexander Volkanovski has just defended his belt at UFC 290 against Yair Rodriguez, he’s already looking forward and eyeing a potential rematch with Islam Makhachev at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi. Oh, and that’s despite Volkanovski’s need for an arm surgery.

While Volkanovski has slowly been building his legacy these last few years as a UFC champion, the possibility of cementing himself as one of the few double champions in UFC history has been very enticing to him. He fought Islam Makhachev to a very close decision at UFC 284 and has confessed to being eager for another shot at the lightweight title.

“We all know I want that lightweight belt,” Alexander Volkanovski began, speaking at the UFC 290 post-fight press conference (H/T MMA Fighting). “We all know I want that rematch. I want that Islam fight. I think not only for me to get that belt, to get that win back but I think it is a massive fight for the UFC as well.”

Alexander Volkanovski talks about a rematch with Islam Makhachev

“I think it’s a fight everyone wants to see,” Volkanovski continued. “It was literally that type of fight. It was that close. It was a cracking fight. Everyone enjoyed it. I was very, very high level. It was (No. 1 and No. 2 pound-for-pound) going at it. We showed out, it really was that., He lived up to the hype. I lived up to the hype and that fight lived up to the hype. We just need to see (rounds) 5 to 10.”

While Charles Oliveira is widely assumed to be next up for his own rematch with Islam Makhachev, Oliveira is not interested in fighting until November, or December. This opens up the possibility of somebody like Alexander Volkanovski stepping up to face Makhachev at UFC 294 in Abu, Dhabi.

“It makes it a lot better opportunity for me to step in there (against Islam Makhachev),” Volkanovski said when addressing Oliveira not being ready for October. “I’m not ruling that out. It’s funny. These people want extra time off and here I am telling you I’m going to get surgery and I’ll probably going to turn out there in October. That’s what I’m showing you.”

Do you think Volkanovski will be ready to rematch Makhachev in October?
