At UFC 284, Alexander Volkanovksi took on Makhachev in an attempt to become a two-division champion. The fight was an all-time great, but Volkanovski would be denied the storybook ending, as the judges deemed Makhachev the victor.
Whilst some have debated the decision, the general consensus appears to be that either man could have won, although Makhachev arguably had the bigger moments outside of the 5th round. Interestingly enough, when the UFC released their updated rankings, Volkanovski was still at the top of the P4P list.
Speaking after his win at UFC 284, Makhachev loudly proclaimed himself as the best fighter in the world. However, the UFC does not seem to agree, with the Australian holding his spot at the top of the rankings.
Ahead of his upcoming return, Jon Jones has also moved up a spot in the P4P rankings, overtaking Jiri Prochazka, who is currently out of action due to injury.
Do you believe Alexander Volkanovski is deserving of his place in the P4P rankings?

During an appearance on The MMA Hour, the Australia native discussed his thoughts on Makhavev’s weight on fight night then hinted at Makhachev using an IV to rehydrate after his weight cut to 155 pounds.
Volkanovski’s teammate Dan Hooker took to social media today and spoke about how Makhachev allegedly hired a nurse to provide an IV for rehydration. He went on to call the 155-pound champion a “cheater”. Makhachev successfully defended his lightweight title against Volkanovski this past weekend at UFC 284.
Volkanovki’s interview was taped before Hooker’s comments.
“Yeah, 178, 180 [pounds] I think [Islam Makhachev] would’ve been. I heard he gets up to 180, like 83 kilograms close to it. You fill up pretty quick on the IV’s and stuff like that…Maybe that’s a little shot at him.”
The UFC have not responded to the allegations.
Alexander Volkanovski is Confident He’ll Beat Islam Makhachev in a Rematch
With another opportunity, the 145-champion Volkanovski believes he’ll defeat Makhachev and become a double champion. It was his first loss since May 2013.
“I don’t want to be that guy but if he was just a featherweight in my division, I’d squash him. I’d squash him. It’s a walk in the park. No offense to him but that’s legit and I can make this a walk in the park right now. We fight again and we do this rematch, which…I talked about it, Islam talked about, UFC’s talking about it, and everyone else is talking about it so I think we can make that happen. I don’t need him to be a featherweight…He can get as big as he wants, IV, whatever he does it doesn’t matter. Watch what happens next time.”

UFC featherweight Arnold Allen disagrees with the end result of UFC 284. Islam Makhachev retained his lightweight title over featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski by unanimous decision.
During an appearance on The MMA Hour, Allen said he thought Volkanovski did enough to claim double champion status. Despite the loss, Arnold praised Volkanovski for his showing and how he handled his loss in Perth, Australia.
“I scored it for Volk. Rounds two, three and five,” Allen said. “He’s inspirational. Everything he does is what you want to see in your champion… The things he says after about not being afraid to fail, going out there and taking the opportunity. Yeah, you can not respect that guy.”
Allen also said that he believes there should be a rematch between Volkanovski and Makhachev for the lightweight title. If Volkanovski does win a rematch, Allen believes he’ll stay at lightweight.
Arnold Allen Has An Upcoming Fight Against A Former UFC Champion
The 29-year-old is scheduled to fight Max Holloway at UFC Fight Night on April 15. Holloway is a former UFC featherweight champion. He won the interim belt in December 2016 and went on to unify it against José Aldo at UFC 212. He defended the title three times before dropping it to current champion Volkanovski.
Allen is on a 12-fight unbeaten streak dating back to August 2014. He last defeated Calvin Kattar by TKO last October. He also has wins over Dan Hooker, Sodiq Yussuff, and Gilbert Melendez.
The England native spoke about Holloway and the damage he’s gained over his fighting career.
“He’s only human right? The damage has got to catch up to you. He’s not much older than me but he has been in a lot of crazy fights against top-tier athletes and he’s given a lot of damage but he always takes as much as gives as well,” Arnold said. “What you’re expecting from me is probably what I’m going to say. I’m expecting the best version, I’m preparing for the best, [and] I’m training for the best.”
