UFC Fight Night 115 emanated today (Sat., September 2, 2017) from Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The show was headlined by a pair of uber-tall big men, as Stefan “The Skyscraper” Struve battled Alexander Volkov. In addition to the main event, it also turned into the Fight of the Night. Both Struve and Volkov banked an extra $50,000 for their slugfest.

Though it was a foul-laden affair with multiple eye pokes, particularly from Struve, the two heavyweights tore into each other for every other moment of the bout. A flying knee opened a gnarly cut under Volkov’s eye and seemed to give him an extra sense of urgency. He countered that with a takedown and punishing ground and pound to end the first frame.

“Drago” gradually took over to an increasing degree as the fight deepened, snapping Struve’s head back with punches and chewing up his legs and body with kicks. Visibly slowing down, Struve had a harder and harder time maintaining distance and finding the mark on his own shots. Volkov put the nail in the coffin in the third when a final barrage against the fence forced Struve to his seat, prompting the referee to intervene on the Dutchman’s behalf.

Two undercard fighters took home matching Performance of the Night bonuses, as Zabit Magomedsharipov and Mairbek Taisumov stopped their foes in impressive fashion.

Blue-chipper Magomedsharipov took on the game Mike Santiago, stepping in on short notice just two weeks after fighting on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contenders Series. Zabit’s flashy and dangerous striking and counter-wrestling game proved too much for Santiago, who hung tough but ultimately submitted to a second-round rear-naked choke.

Taisumov was equally impressive, one-shotting formerly undefeated Felipe Silva with a counter right hand. As Silva pressed forward aggressively, Taisumov ducked under a left hand and landed a short overhand right on the button. Silva face-planted, looking up in a dazed state from the canvas. Taisumov calmly walked off as the referee jumped in to save Silva from unnecessary punishment.

The UFC returned from an extended hiatus today (Saturday, September 2, 2017) at the Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The European card was headlined by two massive heavyweights in Stefan Struve and Alexander Volkov in a heavyweight slugfest.

The main event was a foul-laden affair, with Struve poking Volkov in the eye multiple times and receiving one of his own, without any points being deducted. Struve opened a big gash under Volkov’s eye late in round one with a flying knee, but Volkov answered that with a takedown and stiff ground and pound.

“Drago” gradually took over in the second and third rounds, as he repeatedly snapped back Struve’s head with punches and chewed up his legs with kicks. Struve started to slow down and Volkov’s hand speed began telling, as he countered effectively and punched around Struve’s guard in combination when “The Skyscraper” put up his defenses.

Volkov finally forced Struve to his seat behind a final barrage of blows against the fence, and referee Marc Goddard was not far behind him.

The co-main event featured middleweights, as Siyar Bahadurzada welcomed undefeated Australian Rob Wilkinson to the UFC. It was a rude welcome, as Bahadurzada battered the newcomer with power punchdes for a second-round TKO.

Today’s (Sat., September 2, 2017) UFC Rotterdam is in the books from the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

In the main event, massive heavyweights Alexander Volkov and Stefan Struve met in a clash of two of the tallest fighters in UFC history. As expected, a war developed, with hometown favorite Struve cutting open Volkov with a jumping knee, only to see the Russian answer back with seemingly endless flurries of big shots.

When the dust settled on the back-and-forth war, it was Volkov who was left standing victorious when he finished “Skyscraper” with a crisp combo and a follow-up assault of ground and pound in the third round.

The round comes to an end with Volkov still on top reigning down shots, but he is cut very bad on his cheek.

Round 2:

Struve goes for an uppercut but is stopped mid-punch from a Volkov hook. A leg kick from Volkov takes on Struve’s legs from under him, but he’s able to pop back up. An overhand lands for Struve but he eats back-to-back shots from Volkov, who then begins waking him down. Struve seems to be a bit wobbly now as Volkov continues his attack. The round comes to an end with a body kick being caught by Volkov.

Struve begins to get into a rhythm but Volkov lands some big shots of his own. Some nice shots land for Volkov on the inside and he follows it up with a knee to the skull. Nice left hook for Volkov and Struve fires back with a high-kick.

A huge right hand lands for Volkov and he follows it up with yet another. Volkov continues the pressure and it’s just too much for Struve to handle. He tumbles over and Volkov’s ground-and-pound forces the ref to wave things off.

Official Result: Alexander Volkov def. Stefan Struve via R3 TKO (punches, 3:30)
