A potential heavyweight title-eliminator between Russian duo, Sergei Pavlovich and Alexander Volkov is reportedly already in jeopardy for a UFC Fight Night Saudi Arabia card in June – with the pair allegedly blindsided by the announcement of a clash amongst themselves by organizational officials.

Pavlovich, the current number three ranked heavyweight contender, has been sidelined since he co-headlined UFC 295 last November, suffering his second Octagon loss in a stunning first round KO loss to Tom Aspinall in the pair’s interim title fight.

And as for compatriot, Volkov, the number six rated challenger has yet to return since he stopped Tai Tuivasa back in September at UFC 293 in Australia

Earlier this week, reports emerged detailing how Volkov would be returning to the Octagon at UFC 301 in May in a trip to Brazil to take on recent feature, Jailton Almeida in a pivotal showdown.

However, upon the announcement of a UFC Fight Night Saudi Arabia card this summer in Riyadh, promotional boss, Dana White revealed Sergei Pavlovich would be taking on Volkov in a co-headliner in the Middle East – much to the reported dismay and surprise of the duo.

“(Alexander) Volkov and (Sergei) Pavlovich were not going to fight each other, they are on good terms, periodically [they] train together,” A source told RingSide24 following an initial report from Red Fury MMA regarding the surprise nature in the booking of Sergei Pavlovich vs. Alexander Volkov. “Such a fight is only possible if it is a [title] challenger or title fight.”

“Volkov also already had a contract in hand for a fight against Brazilian, Jailton Almeida. Now there will be negotiations between the league [UFC] and managers to have the fight between Volkov and Pavlovic cancelled.”

Atop the slated UFC Fight Night Saudi Arabia card in June, a potential title-eliminator between former middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker, and surging, unbeaten contender, Khamzat Chimaev is slated to take main event status.

Tai Tuivasa admits he was f*cked after he was first punched by Sergei Pavlovich at UFC Orlando

Slated to make his Octagon return against towering Russian striker, Alexander Volkov in the co-main event of UFC 293 in September, hometown favorite, Tai Tuivasa has claimed that after his opening exchange with Sergei Pavlovich en route to a first round knockout loss at UFC Orlando back in December, he was essentially “f*cked”.

Tuivasa, the current number six ranked heavyweight contender under the banner of the promotion, has been booked to make his Octagon return at UFC 293 in September in Sydney, Australia – taking on former Bellator MMA and M-1 Global heavyweight champion, Volkov in a return ‘Down Under’.

Suffering his second consecutive KO loss in his December defeat against surging number one ranked contender, Pavlovich, Tuivasa had headlined UFC Paris in September of last year against former interim titleholder, Ciryl Gane, suffering an eventual third round KO loss to the Frenchman in the pair’s Fight of the Night effort.

Tai Tuivasa reflects on UFC Orlando KO loss last December

And detailing his experience against the surging, Pavlovich last December in ‘The Sunshine State’, Tuivasa admitted that candidly, he was in serious acrimony in the opening exchange with the bruiser.

“That one [fight with Sergei Pavlovich], I was maybe a bit rushed,” Tai Tuivasa told The Halfcast Podcast. “But, I still trained hard. The camp was all right – I was fit. Really, all that fight was down to was who hit who first. And, I was obviously trying to hit him first, but he hit me with the first hit, and I knew I was f*cked.”

“I was just like, ‘F*cking hell,’” Tai Tuivasa explained. “Then I come back and I tired to throw another big hit and then I did this, a 360 spin. I was like, ‘That is not what my head wanted,’ I was already dizzy and then did a full spin. Then it was just I hoped something hit him.”

Reigning UFC bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling, weighs in on this past weekend’s main event and its controversial ending.

Saturday night saw a heavyweight clash between Alexander Volkov and Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC Vegas 56. The fight lived up to many beliefs that it would not go the allotted 25 minutes, in fact, the fight wouldn’t even get out of the first round.

Early on in the contest, it was obvious that Volkov was attempting to chop the tree down, finding great success early with the low kick, to which he would add the right hand which began to land. During a chaotic flurry in the Octagon, Volkov would successfully evade Rozenstruik’s power shots and would land his own right hand, wobbling the Surinamese fighter.

Rozenstruik would then back up to the fence while the Russian began to unleash on him, sending ‘Bigi Boi’s mouthpiece flying in the process. With Rozenstruik visibly hurt, referee, Herb Dean, would call the action, but Rozenstruik would recover quickly, making the stoppage look premature which led to many criticizing Dean’s decision.

Aljamain Sterling Weighs In

On the latest episode of his podcast, Aljamain Sterling, shares his thoughts on the stoppage, coming to the defense of Herb Dean.

“As long as it lasted this fight was fun, Rozenstruik had his moments, got caught with a right hand then got caught with the uppercut against the cage. It felt like from the way I was watching that he went limp twice and when you do that, even when you’re standing u and you go like- it looks like the fight is over because it looks like there is a big disconnect between the brain and the body.”

Sterling would also admit, that while Rozenstruik recovered quickly, it would not have ended badly for Rozenstruik if Dean had let it continue.

“Rozenstruik, ‘Bigi Boi’ recovered really quickly but when you go back and watch the stoppage, I do not think it was a bad stoppage, I think it was only going to get worse.

“There’s a very fine line between the ref letting you live to fight another day and letting you get punished to the point you probably won’t be able to fight for another day. I think the ref made a good judgemental move.”

Alexander Volkov Talks About Potentially Controversial Stoppage at UFC Vegas 56; ‘I Just Did My Job’

Alexander Volkov scored an impressive first-round TKO against Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC Vegas 56 on Saturday, but the win did not come without a little bit of controversy.

Around the two-minute mark of the first round, ‘Drago’ landed a big right that stunned ‘Bigi Boy,’ wobbling the man from Suriname. Volkov unloaded multiple strikes as Rozenstruik began to cover up, looking for a way out of the danger. As Volkov continued to lay on the strikes, Rozenstruik dropped to one knee, prompting referee Herb Dean to step in and stop the bout. Rozenstruik immediately protested the stoppage.

While discussing the fight during the UFC Vegas 56 post-fight press conference, Volkov defended the stoppage believing that had it continued, Rozenstruik would have absorbed more unnecessary punishment.

“In the moment, I hit him, he was a little bit knocked out so he wasn’t being fully fresh,” said Volkov. “Anyway, it was a big opportunity to knock him out, to land because he was almost on the mat. I was ready to throw him down and continue my work.”

After the stoppage, the MMA community immediately began to question Herb Dean’s call. This is far from the first time Dean has been criticized for his decision-making in the Octagon. Dean has often been accused of being indecisive during a potential fight-ending sequence, but Volkov was quick to remind fans that he has no control over the referee’s actions.

“[Rozenstruik] was in a bad position,” Volkov said. “The referee stopped the fight. He was in a bad position and he took some hard punches and he was a little bit knocked out. It’s not my fault but ask this of the referee, not me. I just did my job.”

Alexander Volkov is Back in The Win Column After UFC Vegas 56 Victory

Regardless of anyone’s opinion on the stoppage, the win puts Volkov back into the win column after a disappointing performance against Tom Aspinall at UFC London in March.

“I’m really happy to come back on a win streak,” Volkov said. “I’m happy to come back with a win. I’m just happy. I did all the plan I had in this fight. Everything went perfect. Nothing went wrong. Everything’s good.”

Intent on working his way to a UFC heavyweight title opportunity, Volkov discussed what may come next. A potential rematch with heavyweight gatekeeper Derrick Lewis is a possibility according to ‘Drago’, but another crack at Ciryl Gane seems to be what the Russian-born fighter is looking for.

“It doesn’t matter for me about revenge or winning other fights,” Volkov explained. “I’m ready for any challenge. Any challenge would be good but maybe I want to rematch with [Ciryl] Gane because this fight was close. With Derrick Lewis, I won all the rounds and then I just took this punch. It was good for him. He was good with his punch, but anyway, I don’t feel this is a big problem for me.

“For me, I like more challenges, and right now, for me, I think that rematch with Gane because I respect him very much, about his stand-up work, about everything, it’s very interesting for me to meet him again. I’m ready for any challenge against any fighters, any time.”
