Two heavyweight fighters will look to ring in the new year with a win.

MMA Junkie broke the news Monday that Greg Hardy will be meeting Alexey Oleynik at UFC 270 on January 22. There is currently no main event or venue officially announced for the event.

Greg Hardy came into mixed martial arts as a controversial figure with a past marred by domestic violence allegations. The controversy didn’t end when the former NFL player made his way to the Octagon. After being disqualified in his UFC debut, Hardy would later have a win overturned for his use of an inhaler during a clash with Ben Sosoli.

In his last two visits to the cage, things have not gone well for “The Prince of War.” Hardy was taken down and pounded out by Marcin Tybura last December. In his most recent outing, Hardy was flattened by Tai Tuivasa in the first round.

Oleynik will be looking to snap a losing streak of his own when he meets Hardy. The Eastern European last tasted victory when he beat former UFC champ Fabricio Werdum in 2020. Since the win, Oleynik has been knocked out by Derrick Lewis and the rising Chris Daukaus. Oleynik’s losing streak recently slipped to three when he lost a decision to Sergey Spivak in June.

With the addition of this fight, the slim UFC 270 card currently is as follows:

Israel Adesanya vs. Robert Whittaker (Unconfirmed)

Jared Cannonier vs. Derek Brunson

Greg Hardy vs. Alexey Oleynik

What is your prediction for this classic striker vs. grappler bout?

Fabricio Werdum

Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum will make his long-awaited Octagon return against Alexey Oleynik.

A report from Combate confirms Werdum will meet Oleynik at UFC 250 on May 9 from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Werdum is currently serving a two-year suspension from the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) that was handed down in 2018. However, Werdum was recently granted a 10-month reduction in his suspension and will be reinstated on April 1. Werdum hasn’t competed since March of 2018 when he was knocked out by Alexander Volkov.

The loss ended a two-fight win streak for the Brazilian, who later tested positive for the banned substance, trenbolone, and its metabolite, epitrenbolone, in an out-of-competition drug test. As for Oleynik, he ended a two-fight losing streak at UFC 246 when he submitted Maurice Greene in their heavyweight clash. After the win, Werdum actually took to Twitter to voice his desire for a fight with Oleynik.

“Congratulations @oleynikufc all my respect for you BUT I think my JiuJitsu it’s better, let’s dance you can be my special guest for my return in the UFC”

This is quite the matchup, as both Werdum and Oleynik are skilled grapplers that can submit their opponents from anywhere. If this fight finds its way to the ground, it will certainly be a sight to see.

What do you think about the matchup between Werdum and Oleynik?

It was recently announced that the UFC will finally be heading to Russia for the very first time, with the promotion set to host an event at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow, Russia on Sept. 15, 2018.

And now, according to MMAFighting.com, the card has its main event, as a bout between former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum and rising contender Alexey Oleynik has been set to take place in the headlining role.

Werdum, one of the best submission artists in the history of the sport, recently called out Oleynik on social media and is coming off of a knockout loss to Alexander Volkov in the main event of UFC Fight Night 127 this past March in London, England.

Prior to that, however, he had been riding a two-fight winning streak that included victories over the likes of Walt Harris and Marcin Tybura.

Oleynik, on the other hand,  is a true veteran of the sport, possessing a 56-11-1 professional record. He has gained recognition since joining the UFC in 2014, however, going 5-2 with two of those victories coming via the rare Ezekiel choke. Like Werdum, Oleynik is well-versed in the art of grappling, as 44 of his professional victories have come by way of submission.

Who do you expect to come out on top when these two heavyweights meet this fall?

UFC 224 emanated tonight (Saturday, May 12, 2018) from the Juenesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, headlined by a women’s bantamweight defense by champ Amanda Nunes opposite contender Raquel Pennington.

The Fight of the Night, though, would go to co-headliners Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Kelvin Gastelum. The Brazilian grappling savant took Gastelum down in the first and pursued the finish. But he wore himself out in the attempt, and the lighter, younger Gastelum put it on him over the final ten minutes. While Souza had his moments, landing hard shots down the stretch, he was obviously fatigued. The Arizona native sat him down with a left cross in the second round and seemed to have him on the ropes from then on. In the end, Gastelum emerged victorious with a split decision victory. But both men earned an extra $50,000 for their Fight of the Night efforts.

In the opener of the main card, Lyoto Machida added another brilliant knockout to his highlight reel, blasting Vitor Belfort into unconsciousness with a scintillating front kick to the jaw in the second round. The kick was reminiscent of Anderson Silva’s UFC 126 knockout of Belfort. On the post-fight show, Machida dubbed the move the “Retirement Kick”, since he sent Randy Couture packing with a similar highlight. “The Dragon” pocketed an extra $50,000 for his efforts.

The final Performance of the Night bonus went to Alexey Oleynik, who pulled off the second Ezekiel choke finish in UFC history. He also owns the first. This one, too, was from the bottom, just like his submission of Viktor Pesta. This time he dragged Junior Albini down on top of him, latched onto the neck, and squeezed until the tap came. Despite being in half guard on top, Albini was forced to tap, giving the Ezekiel choke specialist another feather in his cap and an extra $50,000.
