Alistair Overeem Says Fedor is a “Little Bit Out of the Picture”

Many MMA fans continue to try to make sense of the sport’s landscape, just two days removed from Fedor Emelianenko’s stunning loss to Fabricio Werdum. Fedor’s first defeat in a decade just wasn’t supposed to happen; not against Werdum, despite the Brazilian’s ever increasing abilities. Really, when you think about it, Fedor was kind of effed with this fight either way. If he won, Fedor’s critics would say all he had done was beat a guy that got bombed out by Junior Dos Santos. Someone, “The Last Emperor” could have elected to fight, if he hadn’t ‘dodged’ tough competition in the UFC…But, Fedor lost, so here’s more on the flip side of that undesirable coin…

For many of Fedor’s critics, Saturday’s result was likely proof that the Russian legend’s reign as the world’s #1 P4P fighter has long been over (beating Hong Man Choi just didn’t do it for a lot of people…). Of course Alistair Overeem was also adversely affected by Saturday’s result, as now the Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion may never face Emelianenko, in what could have been the promotion’s biggest fight to date. Speaking to Sherdog.com, the Dutchman had this to say, when asked about Fedor’s future:

“Fedor’s a little bit out of the picture,” said Overeem. “He has one more fight on his (Strikeforce) contract and I don’t know against who he’ll fight. He might retire after that anyway. He might retire now. He’s the X-factor.”

Out of the picture huh? Not surprising considering Overeem also claims that Fedor turned down a fight with him in May. MMA is a ‘what have you done for me lately’ sport, but, we’re thinking Fedor still has some big wins in him yet. Check out the entire Overeem interview here.

Scott Coker Says Fedor vs. Werdum II Possible

Last night the Earth was without oxygen for just a second, as thousands upon thousands of MMA fans worldwide gasped in unison, while seeing Fedor Emelianenko tap out to Fabricio Werdum’s first round triangle-choke. Yes, many acknowledged the skills of Werdum heading into the bout, but few expected him to hand Fedor his first ‘legit’ loss in over 30 fights (some may have been hoping- right Dana?)

So, what the eff is next for “The Last Emperor” now? The script seemed to be that Fedor would beat Werdum and then fight Strikeforce’s Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem. Well, considering that the winner of last night’s bout was supposed to fight Alistair, Fabricio is a lock for a title shot right? And Fedor will have to look elsewhere in the Strikeforce heavyweight division? Umm, seems not necessarily….

In a few reports today, it looks like the general ‘vibe’ stemming from last night’s post-fight press conference, is that Strikeforce is open to giving Fedor a rematch with Werdum. Both men said they’re willing, and while discussing the promotion’s heavyweight picture, Strikeforce boss man Scott Coker was quoted saying this (thanks to MMA Junkie for the quote):

“To me, Fabricio and Fedor is going to be a mega-fight that we should promote,” Coker said. “I also think that Fabricio vs. Alistair, the rematch against our champion, is something Alistair is going to want and would be another big fight. I think that the fight between Fedor and Alistair should still happen, as well.”

So, while Coker didn’t commit to an immediate rematch, he didn’t say that Alistair vs. Werdum was a lock either….Guess only time (with M-1 Global’s two huge cents in there) will tell.

‘Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum’ Aftermath: Well, Holy Shit

In the days and weeks following Fedor Emelianenko’s stunning loss to Fabricio Werdum inside the Strikeforce cage on Saturday night, some jerk with a website or internet radio show will probably try to tell you that he saw this coming. When that happens it will be important for you to remember that, aside from a very, very select group of individuals, those people are goddamned liars.

In retrospect – and retrospect always feels cheap – maybe it’s not shocking that Emelianenko lost a fight down the stretch of his storied MMA career. Regardless of the nonsensical stuff Frank Shamrock told us at the top of last night’s broadcast about Fedor’s “impenetrable shield of invincibility,” Emelianenko himself has taken pains to remind us again and again that he is, in fact, just a man; a man who puts his traditional Russian garments on one leg at a time like everybody else.

But to lose this fight? Admit it, you didn’t see that coming.

Fedor Emelianenko was a no-show for Monday’s episode of “The MMA Hour” with Ariel Helwani, leaving M-1 Global’s Director of Operations, Evgeni Kogan, to answer questions in his stead.

Kogan spent much of his time on the show shooting down rumors about M-1 Global’s most famous fighter, saying that he did not think Emelianenko was seriously considering retirement and insisting that neither Emelianenko nor M-1 Global is avoiding a fight with Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem.

“We have no problem with fighting anyone,” Kogan told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani. “Fedor doesn’t choose his opponents. He will fight whoever is put in front of him.”

Alistair Overeem Says Bout with Fedor Emelianenko Has to be Next

Next weekend Fedor Emelianenko will gun for his second Strikeforce win against Fabricio Werdum, and when you have a dude whose last loss occurred when people still used the term ‘Y2K’, it’s pretty understandable why almost everyone is expecting Fedor to win. This despite the fact, that, sorry “Last Emperor” die-hards, the Russian has looked beatable in his last couple of outings against Brett Rogers and Andrei Arlovski.

Of course, if Fedor does win next Saturday, then one would think (and pray) that Strikeforce will make the logical and fiscally promising choice, and roll with Emelianenko vs. heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem. Especially in light of the fact that finally, newbie fans who don’t follow MMA abroad, actually got to see who this so-called Overeem was when he beat down Rogers last month in St. Louis (it was the Dutch fighter’s first fight in North America since 2007). Overeem recently spoke with MMA Bay, and had this to say about who Fedor should fight next, provided he takes out Werdum.

“My number one priority is to defend my belt at Strikeforce and keep fighting as much as I can. For me the fight with Fedor makes the most sense. If Strikeforce has the number one fighter in the world then it’s crazy that its belt holder (me) is not fighting him. I know the fans want it so therefore I want it. I would love to fight the man that’s considered by most people the best in the world.”

We agree Alistair. Not putting together Overeem vs. Emelianenko- that’s effin crazy talk. To bet on the June 26th Strikeforce head here.

You can call him a loudmouth liar with no heart — damned reality-show editing! — but to me, Jamie Yager was by far the most interesting character on the eleventh season of The Ultimate Fighter. In the Octagon, he kept his opponents guessing with wild high-kicks and a relentless pace. (Not that we don’t love a long, drawn-out, wrestling-based grind.) In the house, he had a way of pushing his fellow fighters’ buttons.

Since he’s still so new to the game, the only non-TUF fight featured in the above highlight reel comes from another reality show, The Iron Ring, which he also appeared on. Unsurprisingly, the video doesn’t include the anti-climactic ending of his fight against Josh Bryant. Can Fro Cop redeem himself at this Saturday’s TUF 11 Finale against Rich Attonito?

After the jump: To get that oily Yager taste out of your mouth, here’s another highlight reel that James Blair did for a more deserving fighter…
