Aljamain Sterling, UFC bantamweight champion, recently revealed that he continues to deal with the torn bicep injury that has plagued him for almost a year now. The bantamweight division is objectively one of the most competitive and exciting in the sport and having an inactive champion impacts the progress of the division.

Aljamain Sterling (22-3) had two fights in 2022, and another title defense against Henry Cejudo seemed to be on the cards for this year. However, the news of the injury and Aljo’s desire to take more time off sparked a tidal wave of reactions in the MMA community.

Via Twitter, current #4 ranked bantamweight Chito Vera had a simple, yet hard-hitting reaction:

In addition to Vera, current #1 ranked bantamweight and fan-favorite Sean O’Malley had to throw in his two cents:

As the #1 contender in the division without a champion, O’Malley comes to a logical conclusion.

Clearly, Aljamain’s inactive status has the top bantamweights concerned and looking for the title to be vacated. The near future of the bantamweight division will heavily depend on the matchmaking that follows, and the result of the highly anticipated Vera vs. Sandhagen bout coming up on February 18th at the UFC Apex.

Will Aljamain Sterling’s injury and inactive status lead to him getting stripped of the belt? What do you think the UFC will do with the bantamweight division as a response to this?

Aljamain Sterling Bicep Injury

Undisputed UFC bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling has revealed a torn bicep injury may force him from a potential March return to the Octagon, as he finds himself continuously linked with a title fight defense against the returning, Henry Cejudo.

Sterling, the current undisputed bantamweight champion, co-headlined UFC 280 back in October of last year in Abu Dhabi, UAE against former two-time bantamweight best, T.J. Dillashaw, landing a second round ground strikes TKO triumph.

As for Cejudo, the former undisputed bantamweight and flyweight champion – and Olympic gold medalist to boot, retired from active competition back in May 2020 following a successful 135lbs title knockback against Dominick Cruz.

Aljamain Sterling addresses bicep injury suffered ahead of potential March return

Expected to fight Cejudo as soon as March according to multiple reports as the promotion look to land the undisputed title fight on a UFC 285 card in Las Vegas, Nevada, Sterling revealed, however, how a bicep injury may rule him from such a quickfire return.

“It’s whether or not I can compete with this torn bicep again,” Aljamain Sterling said on his YouTube channel. “Going through another training camp with a torn bicep, against a guy (Henry Cejudo) who is stronger in the wrestling department, who will use his wrestling more. I’m going to need this bicep to compete at 100 percent.” (H/T The Underground)

“And I don’t take Henry Cejudo lightly,” Aljamain Sterling explained. “Is it realistic for me to fight in March? I don’t think it really is.”

Initially winning the undisputed bantamweight crown back in 2021, Sterling would then successfully unify the titles in a rematch against Russian contender, Petr Yan, before handing the returning, Dillashaw a second round loss back in October of last year.

With surging contender, Marlon Vera, and Cory Sandhagen slated to headline a UFC Vegas 69 card in February, as well as the current sitting of #1 ranked contender, Sean O’Malley – the bantamweight division has a host of contenders vying to compete for gold in Sterling’s expected absence.

Bantamweight fighter ‘Chito’ Marlon Vera is less than impressed with the new age UFC champions.

It appeared as though Henry Cejudo would be coming out of retirement to battle the reigning UFC bantamweight champion ‘Funkmaster’ Aljamain Sterling. Recent reports indicate that ‘Funkmaster’ will not be meeting the former champion in the octagon due to a bicep tear.

With this news, the Ecuadorian fighter Marlon Vera took to Twitter and said:

“We don’t have a champ.”

‘Chito’ Marlon Vera sounds off on UFC champions.

While speaking with John Morgan of the MMA Underground, Ecuador’s ‘Chito’ Marlon Vera compared today’s titleholders to a bygone era, he said:

“I’m going to be a great champion. I’m going to fight whoever is next in line. All these guys get the belt, they start acting like b—ches. Get the belt and be a f—king savage. Be a f—king king. Go and do the thing. Defend. Anderson Silva, B.J. Penn, Georges St-Pierre, they did it like that. They got the belt, they fought No. 1. They kicked their asses. That’s why they’re greats now.”

He added that today’s champion will likely not go down in history, ‘Chito’ continued:

“Today’s champions probably won’t be that great because now they’re petty little b—ches that are acting like they’re Hollywood superstars. Pick a side. You get the money fighting. Jon Jones, all those guys made a lot of money because they fought consistently. They made their legacy huge.” [Transcript courtesy of MMA Mania]
