Jéssica Andrade showed that she’s still a strawweight title contender by defeating Amanda Lemos with the first standing arm triangle submission in UFC history.

Andrade secured the win just over three minutes into the main event bout, marking a successful return to the strawweight division. The former champ is now riding a two-fight win streak, having previously defeated Cynthia Calvillo at flyweight. Thanks to her almost two-year absence from the strawweight division, Andrade went into this fight unranked.

For Lemos, the loss was her first in six bouts, ending a run that saw her become the #10- ranked strawweight and most recently defeat Angela Hill. We can now expect Andrade to once again break into the division’s top ten in the coming days.

Former UFC strawweight champion, Jessica Andrade makes a successful return to her prior 115lb stomping grounds — making relatively short work of compatriot, Amanda Lemos with an Octagon-first, standing arm triangle choke win to finish off the UFC Vegas 52 card.

Andrade, a former undisputed strawweight champion, made her first Octagon outing at the limit since July 2020 — entering the all-Brazilian main event off the back of a September knockout win over Cynthia Calvillo.

Tying up Belem veteran, Lemos in the clinch during an exchange, Andrade immediately attempted to set up a standing arm-triangle choke.

Pushing Lemos back to the fence, the #10 ranked challenger tried to defense the submission onslaught, and despite the fact Andrade was unable to drag Lemos to the canvas, the former forced the tap eventually from a standing position — with the first vertical arm triangle win in promotional antiquity.

Making her return to 115lbs for the first time since July 2020, Parana native, Andrade most recently turned in a one-sided late opening round knockout win over Cynthia Calvillo in her most recent flyweight matchup in September of last year at UFC 266.

At 22 wins and 9 losses, her fight record isn’t perfect, but her résumé is one of the most impressive. Now headlining her third UFC event, Andrade expressed in a pre-fight interview that she feels her hard work is definitely being noticed by the promotion:

“I think it’s a lot about an answer for how our work is being done. For me to be called for a main event, I think it means that I’m doing something right. The work that I’m putting out is being noticed by the UFC and they’re trusting me to close the show. And to have two Brazilian women fighting in the main event is also huge.”

And the #1 flyweight has much to be proud of. Andrade has proven she will back down to no one and has fought against some of the women’s division’s toughest competitors.

Andrade showed absolutely no fear in the face of pound-for-pound queen Valentina Schevchenko or former strawweight champion Joanna J?drzejczyk.

One of her most notable victories was back in 2019 when she defeated Rose Namajunas for the strawweight belt. That slam KO was felt around the world, and those who didn’t know about the “Bate Estaca” became fully aware at that moment.

And tonight, Andrade plans to put on another noteworthy performance to signify the special kind of fighter she is.

“I think it’s a great statement to the work that we’re putting to the UFC, and you can be sure that I’m there to prove (to) Dana White. If he chose me to do the main event, it’s because I have something special. I’m gonna be there to prove that to him, to the fans, and to everybody that’s watching.”

Since her defeat to Shevchenko last year, Andrade returned to the winner’s circle after beating Cynthia Cavillo at UFC 266. Ending Amanda Lemos’s 5-fight undefeated streak after seven months out of the Octagon would most certainly make another major statement.

What are your thoughts on Jéssica Andrade’s comments about being called for a UFC main event?

Amanda Lemos is looking to put on a show tonight as she headlines her first UFC event against Jéssica Andrade.

Lemos is the current 10th-ranked strawweight and is undefeated in the weight class after having her UFC debut at bantamweight. Yet, she’s set for the toughest test of her career as she will face former champ Jéssica Andrade in the main event of UFC Vegas 52.

According to Lemos, she is well aware that Andrade poses a threat but she is excited about the challenge. Lemos also believes it will be a very fun fight for the fans as she knows Brazilians always bring it.

“We’re both Brazilians. We’re gonna put on a good fight, and I think it’s gonna be a good show… First of all, Brazilian fans are the best in the world, no doubt,” Lemos said at media day. “Do we want to fight each other? No, perhaps. But then, what it means is that we’ve reached the top. It’s a great thing. The fact that we’re there fighting each other, that means that both of us are at the top of our category. It’s inevitable, at the end of the day.

“We’re gonna put on a show and it just speaks to the fact that we’re always going to fight the fight that we’ve always fought,” Lemos continued. “And that Brazilians are just—a lot of us, Brazilian women, have reached the pinnacle of this. We’re gonna fight each other anyway at the top of the category, so that’s a great thing.”

Amanda Lemos is coming off a split-decision win over Angela Hill back in December to become a top-10 strawweight. Prior to that, she TKO’d Monsterrat Ruiz in 35 seconds after also getting a TKO win over Liva Renato Souza in the first round. In her UFC career, the Brazilian also beat Mizuki Inoue by decision and submitted Miranda Granger after losing to Leslie Smith at bantamweight in her promotional debut.

How do you think Amanda Lemos will do against Jéssica Andrade tonight at UFC Vegas 52?

Andrade Explains Strawweight Return Despite “Traumatic Weight Cut”

Former UFC women’s strawweight champion Jéssica Andrade has explained her decision to return to 115 pounds after a stint at flyweight.

Andrade, who briefly held gold in the UFC after dethroning Rose Namajunas back in 2019, has fought at 125 pounds in her last three appearances in the Octagon. After a successful divisional debut against Katlyn Chookagian, the Brazilian earned a shot at dethroning dominant flyweight queen Valentina Shevchenko.

Unfortunately for Andrade, she was the victim of one of the Kyrgyzstani’s best performances to date at UFC 261 last April, falling via second-round TKO. Despite rebounding in style with a dominant first-round finish of the once highly-touted Cynthia Calvillo, Andrade is set to return to her old stomping ground this weekend.

In the main event of UFC Vegas 52 on Saturday, Andrade will look to return straight into the championship conversation at strawweight by halting the charge of up-and-coming contender Amanda Lemos.

By re-committing to the division in which she was a part of between 2016 and 2020, Andrade is effectively giving up her #1 ranking in the flyweight class. During her appearance at UFC Vegas 52 media day on Wednesday, “Bate Estaca” explained the reasoning behind the move.

When asked whether she foresees an easier path back to gold at 115 pounds, Andrade suggested it’s actually the opposite. But despite choosing a more challenging road back to a title shot, the Brazilian believes her “optimum” performance can only be achieved at strawweight.

“I wouldn’t say it would be quicker (to reach a title shot) at strawweight, because I was already number one at flyweight, and it’s a much tougher division overall,” noted Andrade. “I think the level of competition at strawweight is still quite ahead of the flyweight division. But at the end of the day, I’m a strawweight. I’m gonna perform my best at strawweight. I can do well at flyweight, I can probably do pretty well at bantam(weight), but strawweight is my optimum weight.”

Andrade Brands UFC Vegas 52 Weight Cut The ‘Best Ever’

Given that the reasoning behind her decision to test the flyweight waters came from some difficult weight cuts to 115 pounds, it’s safe to say Andrade has to be confident in her ability to successfully stand on the scales in a healthy way this week.

Having moved to Las Vegas and utilized the often-praised facilities at the UFC Performance Institute, Andrade says weight hasn’t been an issue at all. She even described her ongoing cut as the ‘best ever’.

“I had a couple problems my last two fights at strawweight. I had a traumatic weight cut. Things didn’t really go well, and my mental state for the weight cuts was just not there anymore,” recalled Andrade. “So I asked to take some time off, talked to my coach and said, ‘Maybe we can take a little break, do something else at flyweight.’ It went way better than we ever expected.

“Now, with the support of the PI and living here in Vegas, things are completely different. This weight cut is probably the best that I’ve ever had, even better than the first one, which was the one I focused on the most. This one is easily the best one, the smoothest one,” claimed Andrade.

Andrade certainly seems prepared to re-enter the conversation at 115 pounds. Only time will tell if she can pose a threat to her former two-time opponent Namajunas, who is currently in the midst of her second reign atop the strawweight mountain.

Do you think Jéssica Andrade can return to title contention at strawweight?
