As Khamzat Chimaev‘s stock rose, so did the difficulty of finding an opponent that was both willing to sign on the dotted line and made sense for the undefeated Chechen.

Khamzat Chimaev’s last appearance inside the Octagon came in September when a botched weight cut forced the UFC to shuffle around their UFC 279 card to avoid a potential cancellation. Since then, Khamzat Chimaev has been seemingly calling out everyone at the top of both the welterweight and middleweight divisions, but thus far nobody has answered the call. Chimaev’s coach Andreas Michael recently made an appearance on Submission Radio, sharing his fighter’s frustration over the lack of competitors willing to step up and accept the fight under reasonable terms.

“Yeah, it has [been frustrating] actually, because we’re used to getting fights back-to-back,” he said. “And a lot of people say they want it, but they don’t want it. Or they price themselves out. Like, ‘I want this and that’, and then all of a sudden they want a million dollars when their contract is like 50/50. So, it’s not logical either. That’s the fight game” (h/t MMA Mania).

Michael did clarify that there are plenty of fighters willing to step up and try to make a name for themselves off of Khamzat Chimaev’s popularity, but the only fights that make sense at this point would be against top dogs and titleholders.

“People say they wanna fight but they don’t want to fight. People price themselves out,” he said. “There’s some people that, of course they wanna fight as well, but they don’t make sense. So, there’s a lot of factors [that go] into things. We’re not just gonna fight just for the fight’s sake. Things have to pave the way forward. Of course there’s a lot of people that wanna fight Khamzat. And if he just wanted to, he’d just be like, ‘okay, who’s in the top 20?’. But I think we’re past that, aren’t we?

“I think we need to get the top dogs right now, or go for a title fight. The top dogs. Like, the number one contender or a title fight. And that’s why there’s not a lot of choices out there at the moment, because our spectrum has closed. It was broad before. Now it’s closed down. We’re honing in. We want the number one contender or the champ. Preferably the champ. And I think he’s earned it.”

Andreas Michael Wants a UFC Title Shot Above All Else for Khamzat Chimaev

Following Alex Pereira’s defeat of Israel Adesanya at UFC 281, rumors began to swirl that Khamzat Chimaev would be the first man to challenge Pereira for his newly won UFC gold. When that fight didn’t materialize, ‘Borz’ turned his attention to former UFC champion and perennial contender Robert Whittaker. As we know, that fight never came together leaving Khamzat Chimaev on the sidelines waiting for the next offer from the UFC.

“For me, guys, I would prefer a title shot,” he told Submission Radio. “You know, just go right to the meat and potatoes. So, I just want to go for it directly, if I had to choose. But Robert Whitaker didn’t have a fight. He was one of the few that was free at the moment, but that didn’t materialize either for different reasons. And I just think that the guy’s looking for a fight. An amazing guy. Amazing. And a great fighter as well. A great fighter. So, he was just putting the dots together.

And Khamzat wanted it. He wants to fight everyone, actually. So, we have to pull the reins in a little bit. And that’s our job. That’s our job to make sense of everything happening and guide him in the right place.”

Currently, Khamzat Chimaev is focusing on his religion and has no intentions of returning until after Ramadan which runs from March 22 to April 21. Upon his return, ‘Borz’ will likely be eyeing a matchup with the winner Edwards vs. Usman III on March 18 or Pereira vs. Adesanya II on April 8.

Khamzat Chimaev reflects on abandoning the game plan during his recent win over Gilbert Burns at UFC 273.

About three weeks separated from UFC 273, Chimaev, shared his thoughts on his winning efforts against Gilbert Burns. In one of the most anticipated bouts of the year, the 27-year-old fighter (who turns 28 tomorrow) took on the former title challenger and at the time second-ranked contender at welterweight in the people’s main event of the night.

In an interview with Smesh Bros, Chimaev talked about his mindset during the fight. On being probed by the interviewer about abandoning his game in search of a knockout win, he stated.

“Yeah, that was it,” Chimaev said in agreement. “When I knocked him down, I tasted the blood and wanted to finish him. And I forgot about rounds and time. I couldn’t think of defense and control my emotions. So I was all over the place.”

Khamzat Chimaev compares to Khabib Nurmagomedov

There were plenty of memorable moments from the fight. A photo of Khamzat Chimaev sitting atop the cage waiting for his opponent to walk out right before the start of the action went viral. The interviewer asked the Chechen whether he had planned to sit on top of the cage before the fight.

Making a subtle reference to the legendary Khabib Nurmagomedov, Chimaev called himself the “flying hawk” as he explained his mindset of just wanting to enjoy himself in the cage. It certainly looked like he was having fun, almost like he was waiting for a bus with such a calm demeanor before the fight.

Another person who made headlines from the night was the renowned coach Andreas Michael who was in Chimaev’s corner that night. A clip of Michael howling at Chimaev between rounds grabbed the attention of many on the internet. The All-Stars Sweden head honcho Michael later revealed that he was pleading with his fighter to “stop brawling” and focus on the game plan they had practiced.

Rising UFC prospect Khamzat Chimaev‘s coach Andreas Michael gave his analysis of the UFC 273 fight against Gilbert Burns.

Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns put on a thrilling show in their narrowly-contested bout at UFC 273. In a fight of the night performance, both men went to war that ultimately saw Chimaev come out on top. ‘Borz’ faced his toughest test going the distance for the first time in his mixed martial arts career.

While the fight was close throughout, Chimaev’s coach Andreas Michael understood he was in for a long night as soon as he saw his fighter go for the takedown in the first round

In an interview with ESPN, coach Michael gives his take on the fight and how Khamzat Chimaev deviated from the game plan.

“His mindset was not what we trained. His mindset was, he’s going to go in there and he’s going to destroy the guy,” said Michael. “Telegraph your punches, you’re swinging, you’re wide, you’re putting everything in every shot. You’re running like a 100-meter tempo but it’s a 3k run.”

Michael believed Khamzat Chimaev would’ve done the job in two rounds if he had stuck to the original game plan of using the jab with a few right hands here and there. “All he needed to do was just use his jab. And sometimes throw the right hand. And I think it would’ve been done in two rounds. Just keep your distance, don’t fall into the shots, don’t get caught with the hooks.”

Khamzat Chimaev calls his performance “embarrassing”

Coach Michael revealed Khamzat Chimaev’s reaction backstage after the fight. He shared how disappointed Chimaev was with his performance and praised Burns for his toughness.

“He threw the game plan out because he promised everyone he was going to knock him out. Backstage, he told me ‘Oh my god, it’s embarrassing. I promised that I was going to knock him out.’ That was the only concern,” said Michael as he continued, “He could’ve done a clinic, I’m being honest. This is not disrespect to Gilbert (Burns).

“The shots that he took, both guys, the shots that they took, my god!”

Going against the instructions of his coach, Chimaev could not manage to look his coach in the eyes, as someone who is a father figure for him. Michael shares the advice he gave after the first round was over.

“When he came back after the first round, I said ‘you’re not going to finish him. Do not go out and look for the finish,’ I said to him but I was calm,” said Michael. “Focus on a stable jab. Stabilize your jab and you’re going to see you don’t need that much power to drop somebody. From going a 100 percent hitting Gilbert (Burns), he just jabbed him and dropped him in the third.

“If he had the patience, he would’ve done the job in an easier manner because no way he lost the fight.”

On being asked about how he would rate the Chechen’s performance on a scale of ten, coach Michael gave him a four in light of everything that he has seen his fighter do in training.
