It appears we almost got to see Anthony Johnson fight at heavyweight once again.
While “Rumble” mentioned the idea of moving up for a one-off fight and actually talked about Andrei Arlovski without saying his name, nothing came of it.
Now, Arlovski is explaining why.
Now I have to apologize to UFC and @Anthony_Rumble I have never turned down a fight. My team turned it down for me when I was in Russia
The UFC and Johnson seemed content to keep him on the recent UFC 205 card after an injury scrapped a bout with Daniel Cormier for the light heavyweight title.
In 2013, Johnson scored a decision victory over Arlovski while both were signed to the World Series of Fighting.

The American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) has faced quite a bit of scrutiny over the years as quite a bit of their fighters seem to have a habit of pulling out of fights due to injury during training camp.
Most recently former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold was forced out of his highly-anticipated rematch with Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza that was supposed to go down at this past Saturday’s (November 26, 2016) UFC Melbourne event, however, Rockhold was forced to pull out of the fight due to a knee injury. Now Rockhold’s teammate and current UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has been forced off of his 205-pound title defense against Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson at UFC 206, as ‘DC’ tore a groin muscle during training camp.
Along with Rockhold and Cormier, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and No. 1-ranked lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov have also shown struggles with maintaining their health throughout the progression of a fight camp. Cormier is the latest on that long list, and news broke on UFC Tonight last night that he requires surgery that will keep until next March at the earliest.
However, Cormier recently spoke to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, courtesy of MMA Fighting, to fire back at those who criticize him and his camp’s methods of preparation:
“How can you train if you’re constantly worried about getting injured?” Cormier said. “Guys play basketball and get hurt and that’s probably the easiest sport on the planet. We’re actually fighting every day. We’re wrestling, we’re grappling.”
When it all comes down to it Cormier stands firmly behind his head-coach Javier Mendez and insists that people should not point the finger at him to blame for AKA’s injury riddled past, because when it all comes down to it ‘DC’ is a grown man who makes his own decisions in the gym:
“It’s not Javier’s fault,” Cormier said. “This isn’t college. We’re not high-school athletes. Javier can tell me not to spar and I’ll be like, ‘Yeah sure, Jav.’ And then I’ll go spar. People always get confused. They talk about coaches. The reality is, these coaches and managers that everybody thinks are in so much control, they work for us. They’re our employees.”
“The decisions are mine,” he said. “If I got hurt, it was my fault.”
Cormier is currently eying a February return-table to give Johnson his rematch at the 205-pound crown, and hopefully a quick turnaround to take on challenger Ryan Bader before July. When Cormier does return to the Octagon, however, he has quite the challenge ahead of him when it comes to ‘Rumble’.
Anthony Johnson wants to be UFC light heavyweight champion.
And he doesn’t want to do it against anyone but Daniel Cormier – and he definitely doesn’t want an interim tag attached to it.
“Rumble,” who was set to meet Cormier for the belt next month at UFC 206, told “The MMA Hour” recently that he wasn’t interested in a proposed interim title fight with Gegard Mousasi at the event.
“Not at all,” he said. “When Gegard was presented to me, it would’ve been a good fight, but it wouldn’t have done anything for me. Fighting him and becoming the interim champion, as much trash as I’ve talked and ‘DC’ has talked about interim titles being fake champions, if I would have beat him, it wouldn’t mean anything.”
Johnson, who lost to Cormier last year via submission, admitted that he was “disappointed” the bout was delayed, but “I didn’t take it to heart because he is actually hurt.” Cormier suffered a groin injury, but is hopeful for an early 2017 return.

The UFC lost yet another high-profile match, as it was announced on Friday that the scheduled main event between Daniel Cormier and Anthony “Rumble” Johnson at UFC 206 in just over two weeks has been cancelled.
…
They just can’t catch a break.
The UFC lost yet another high-profile match, as it was announced on Friday that the scheduled main event between Daniel Cormier and Anthony “Rumble” Johnson at UFC 206 in just over two weeks has been cancelled.
Cormier, the reigning UFC 205-pound champion who defeated Rumble to win the title in their first fight at UFC 187, was forced to pull out of the fight due to injury, leaving Rumble Johnson without an opponent for the December 10th pay-per-view in Toronto.
The Canadian Curse continues, as another event has virtually lost all of its’ luster. Initially the hope was that a Georges St-Pierre return could be put together for the show, however the negotiations ended up falling flat.
Additionally, the UFC 206 fight card, which goes down from the Air Canada Centre and will be broadcast live on pay-per-view, lost its’ co-main event, as the Rashad Evans vs. Tim Kennedy 185-pound fight that was originally scheduled for UFC 205 in New York City was scrapped for the second time in a row due to Evans’ health issues.
According to various reports, the hope right now is that UFC will be able to find someone to replace D.C. against Rumble, who they are attempting to keep on the card, likely in the main event spot if a worthy opponent that can weigh 205-pounds on 12/9 emerges.
