Joshua Pulev

Yesterday it was officially announced that Anthony Joshua would be defending his heavyweight title against mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev.

After his big fight announcement Joshua sat down with Kugan Cassius of IFL TV to discuss his opponent, what he expects and to give an early fight night prediction, he said.

“He’s been in the game for a while. He went to the top level and then he got defeated. So, he knows his way around the ring. He’s had his chance at the top level and now he’s coming back again. So, he’s probably going to try and get it right. I’ll be expecting a more polished, smarter Pulev and he can bang a bit as well he’s had a few knockouts on his record as well. He can bang and he can box. So, he’s a boxer-puncher, kind of like what my style is as well so it’ll be a good match-up for sure. So, we’re going to box, people will be seeing some skills and they’re probably going to see a knockout as well because you’ve got two boxer-punchers so the best man will come out victorious”

When asked
to make a prediction for the fight. “Round 11,” was all he had to say. Joshua
was very specific with his answer but didn’t really offer any insight as to why.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see on fight night if his very specific prediction
come true.

He’ll be hoping it does as big fights lie in wait after this one against Pulev. Tyson Fury will complete his trilogy with Deontay Wilder in July. Once that it is out the way we could potentially see an all-English heavyweight undisputed fight which would certainly be the biggest boxing bout in Britain has ever seen.

Anthony Joshua’s next title defense is set for June 20 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England.

Joshua and his promoter, Eddie Hearn were hoping to make the Tyson Fury fight. Yet, Deontay Wilder triggered the rematch clause leaving Joshua to defend his IBF, WBO, IBO, and WBA (Super) heavyweight titles.

Now, Joshua revealed he would be fighting June 20 and now it is official that he will scrap Kubrat Pulev, which was confirmed by Pulev.

“The contract is already officially signed,” Pulev wrote on his Facebook page (h/t The Guardian). “I am happy to be able to show the world how strong I am.”

Despite Joshua and Fury have fights upcoming, Hearn remains adamant this fight will happen.

“He’s [Fury] promoted by [Top Rank CEO] Bob Arum predominantly,” Hearn told Sky Sports. “Frank Warren is also involved, MTK are his management company. I’ve spoke to Top Rank and I’ve spoke to MTK straight after the fight. Everybody is very clear on this. Everybody wants this fight – Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, MTK, Top Rank, Frank Warren, Matchroom. There are some hurdles to overcome on the broadcasting, but nothing too much.

“I promise you this fight will happen. If we have to fight (Kubrat) Pulev, we’ve got to beat Pulev, and if he has to fight Wilder, he’s got to beat Wilder again. Both of those things will happen. Fury will beat Wilder again and Joshua will knock Pulev clean out, despite Bob Arum telling us very differently. You will get this fight. We will do everything that it takes to make this fight.”

Entering this fight, Anthony Joshua is coming off a dominant decision win over Andy Ruiz Jr. to reclaim his titles after the shocking knockout loss to Ruiz last June.

Pulev, meanwhile, is 28-1 and riding an eight-fight winning streak including beating the likes of Dereck Chisora and Hughie Fury.

There is no question Joshua will be favored here, but as we’ve seen in the past, we can’t underestimate anyone or we may have another Ruiz Jr. situation on our hands.

John Fury, father of Tyson Fury has warned British heavyweight Anthony Joshua against fighting his son. ‘The Gypsy King’ picked up the WBC title on Saturday night, bringing a potential undisputed bout with three-belt holder ‘AJ’ one step closer.

Speaking to IFL TV, Fury senior questioned Joshua’s heart and repeated Top Rank promoter Bob Arum in saying world champion is not really a fighting man.

“Listen AJ this is to you. I’m saying nothing wrong about you as a person, you’re a lovely young man. You’ve done a lot for your country; you’ve got the belts. But I’m only talking in boxing terms and in fight terms and I don’t think you’re a true fighting man. Bob Arum said the same thing, I was thinking it long before Bob Arum said it.

He then went on to send a warning to Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn about avoiding his son at all costs. Otherwise they risk bringing an end Joshua’s lucrative boxing career.

“You’re a nice guy, you
look well, you’ve got a big future but when it comes down to the beating,
fighting lion heart I don’t think you’ve got it. So, don’t mess with Tyson
Fury. Keep your belts, go and fight other people but don’t mess with Tyson
unless its worth your while, because let me tell you it’ll be the last time you
ever box if you mess with him. He will wreck you! 19 stone, 6’9ft wrecking
machine who will not stop coming forward. But he’ll come forward at you educated
and he’ll punish you and he’ll school you and he’ll break your heart. He’ll
make your life a misery and your life will never be the same again. So, think
on. Eddie Hearn that’s to you as well.”

Tyson Fury’s promoter Frank Warren revealed he would be “disappointed” by the prospect of a trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder.

Fury outclassed Wilder en route to seventh-round TKO win to become the new WBC heavyweight champion this past weekend. Given how many felt Fury won the first fight as well, most observers would prefer for him to face Anthony Joshua next in a title unification fight rather than trilogy with the American.

However, Wilder has a rematch clause as part of the fight contract and revealed on Monday that he planned on exercising it. Warren can’t do anything about that, even though he prefers his fighter face Joshua next.

“I prefer to go straight to Joshua, but that is the contract,” Warren told BBC Radio 5 live. “It has to be honoured unless we can reach some accommodation for him to step aside. We could pay him to step aside if he wants to do that, but that is his choice.”

That is unlikely to be the case. Wilder will still feel he can win in a rematch while a third fight with Fury will likely be his most lucrative yet.

“It’s a bit of both,” Warren said. “It would be lucrative for him, but I have spoken to his manager and Deontay does believe he has the beating of Tyson, and he can knock him out. I don’t believe that. I fancied Tyson to stop him before the fight at the weekend. If he insists on the fight, we’re locked into it.”

Joshua, meanwhile, will likely defend his titles against IBF mandatory Kubrat Pulev. However, Warren still feels a title unification fight can happen this year provided both fighters win their next outings.

“I want it before the end of the year, provided Anthony Joshua does not get defeated by anyone else,” he added.

Eddie Hearn Promises Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury Will Happen

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed he will do all he can to make Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury a reality this year.

Following Fury’s WBC heavyweight title win over Deontay Wilder over the weekend, Hearn called for a title unification fight with current unified heavyweight champion Joshua in the summer.

Many were skeptical give how a Joshua vs. Wilder title unification fight never materialized two years ago. However, Hearn says some broadcasting issues aside, everyone involved wants to make this fight happen.

As Hearn mentioned, Kubrat Pulev is set to challenge Joshua next as his IBF mandatory. Meanwhile, Wilder has revealed that he does plan on triggering his rematch clause. That means a summer title unification fight is out of the window.

But should both fighters get through those next bouts, Hearn is confident a big British showdown will occur, especially with both camps wanting the fight:

“Last time, you had us and Team Wilder and we were locking heads,” Hearn added. “Right now, you have two guys and two camps that genuinely want this fight, that genuinely will do everything that they can to make this fight. It is the only fight.

“When are we ever going to get the chance of two British world heavyweight champions fighting for the undisputed title against each other? It’s never happened before it will never happen again. We’d be clowns, we’d be idiots if we didn’t make this fight. We believe we win the fight, they believe they win the fight, so let’s see it.”

Do you think we’ll see it this year?

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn wants an Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury fight to happen later this year.

Fury became the WBC heavyweight champion following his seventh-round TKO win over Deontay Wilder last night. In the process, he established himself as arguably the best heavyweight in the sport today.

Wilder does have a rematch clause which he must reportedly trigger within 30 days. However, given the nature of the fight, many in the combat sport world would prefer to see Fury face domestic rival and current WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO champion Joshua.

And despite the accusations heading his way about wanting to protect his star fighter, Hearn wants to make the fight happen and says Joshua wants it as well:

“Of course I am!” Hearn replied to a fan who said he wouldn’t let Joshua near Fury following the latter’s win. “And AJ wants it bad..this fight is gonna and has to happen this year!”

Hearn added there was no need for a Fury vs. Wilder trilogy and called for a title unification fight with Joshua to happen in the summer:

“No need for a third let’s go straight to it in the Summer! #undisputed”

Of course, things like this have been said in the past before as well. We’ll just have to wait and see if the stars align for the heavyweight title unification fight everyone has been dying to see.
