Controversial boxing reporter Stephen A. Smith has been at it again during the Wilder/Fury II build-up. The ESPN employee found himself in hot water with the MMA community after accusing Donald Cerrone of quitting against Conor McGregor at UFC 246.

Not one to mince his words, Smith has again gone in hard on a fighter, this time British boxing champion Anthony Joshua. The Englishman holds three of the four major heavyweight titles and is a likely opponent for whoever wins this weekend. However, Smith has dismissed Joshua due to his upset loss against Andy Ruiz last year. Despite winning the rematch, Smith isn’t convinced by “AJ” and called his lone career loss shameful, whilst speaking with IFL TV.

“I love Anthony Joshua as a person, and I think he’s good for the sport. I had the pleasure of meeting him and I genuinely like him,” Smith said. “I think Wilder would knock him out! The thing which has disappointed me about Anthony Joshua is his jaw, he’s got a body, he’s in fine physical shape but to get beat by Andy Ruiz that first fight, I thought was shameful. To look the way that he looks and lose to a guy that looks like Jabba The Hutt.

“It’s just inexcusable stuff to me, I don’t think that should happen. It happened because Anthony Joshua’s jaw is questionable. I know Andy Ruiz can fight and he can punch, but he doesn’t hit like Deontay Wilder. I saw Anthony Joshua get down from a right from (Wladimir) Klitschko and get up and get up and knock him out. I get that but this is Deontay Wilder we’re talking about here.

“When you get dropped only Tyson Fury gets up and I don’t think he’ll get up the second go-round and I certainly don’t think Anthony Joshua gets up the first go-round. I think he would lose to Fury by decision. I think he would lose to Wilder by knockout.”

Is Stephen A. Smith right to dismiss Anthony Joshua?

Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is patiently waiting in the wings for his next fight. He’ll be hoping to face the winner of the eagerly anticipated rematch between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury. The first bout between the pair ended in a controversial draw. They’ll now look to settle the score when they meet on Feb 22 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.

‘AJ’ had a tough 2019, losing then regaining his three titles against Mexican Andy Ruiz. Now back on top in 2020, he continues to chase an undisputed fight with whoever holds the WBC belt, currently that is the American Wilder. However, the puncher from Watford isn’t convinced that will remain the case after Feb 22. Speaking to Sky Sports he offered his opinion on the fight and predicted a new champion will be crowned when the two fighters square off for a second time, he said.

“I believe that Fury
(Tyson) will win, because Wilder has shown you can’t blink for a second with him
because it takes one punch against Ortiz (Luis). But it shows that a good boxer
who’s young and fresh and can follow a game plan can be victorious for seven to
X amount of rounds. Boxing is about hitting and not getting hit and Ortiz got hit
with a big punch. But Fury is quite evasive, Fury’s quite bigger, Fury boxers
back and flicks his jab, so he is quite difficult to hit. Fury fought Wilder
the first time after a long layoff. I think Fury has taken some relatively soft
touch fights, got his confidence back and going into the new year I think as a
new man, new team, new mindset over his mental health issues. So, he must feel
something in him that is new, and he wants to be the new heavyweight champion
of the world. So, I think Fury has a good chance of beating Wilder, providing
he follows his game plan for the 12 rounds.”

Unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has no plans on having a prolonged slugfest with Deontay Wilder.

Wilder defends his WBC heavyweight title in a rematch against Tyson Fury on February 22. Although it is unlikely, especially as both fighters have a rematch clause, Joshua is hoping that the winner — ideally Wilder — faces him next in a much-awaited title unification bout.

As Wilder has shown in his bouts with Fury and rematch with Luis Ortiz, he can get outboxed for majority of the fight. However, it won’t matter if he is able to land that one devastating punch. That is why Joshua will look to end things early should he face the American:

“He wouldn’t be there to do that in the seventh round,” Joshua told Sky Sports of Wilder’s win over Ortiz. “I would go in to knock him out. It’s heavyweight against heavyweight, champion against champion.

“This is a serious fight, so I ain’t going to go in there to try and outbox him for 12 rounds, because of his punching power as well. I’ve got to go in there and take him out. Don’t let him get too comfortable in the ring with me.”

If Joshua is to land that knockout blow, he’ll have to avoid Wilder’s power. “The Bronze Bomber” is arguably the heaviest-hitter in the sport today. But “AJ” feels he can deal with taking Wilder’s power advantage away.

“Nah, not scary, but I know it’s there,” Joshua added of Wilder’s power. “There are certain punches. Some are like concussive, some are stinging and some are like punches where they knock you out with one punch and you’re out for the count.

“Wilder possesses that kind of power. It’s about eliminating that power and just studying how to deal with it really.”

Of course, all this talk is futile if the two parties don’t make the fight happen. After all, there have been failed negotiations for years. However, Joshua hinted that it’s Wilder who is holding up a potential title unification fight.

“We’ve done it, we’ve unified it, in the space of 20 odd fights,” he said. “He’s had 40 odd fights. How come he hasn’t managed to unify the division yet? If he’s looking for it, we’re the ones to do it with, and we’re not hard to find. We’ve got a great team behind us, so reach out.

“Even though there are two at the minute, I’ll let the people decide who they think is the real heavyweight champion right now. I always say, we’re in the same division, the same era, that fight has to happen. We just put on an amazing event. We’re going to do another amazing event god willing in the new year. He can come and be part of history. We’re trying to achieve big things in boxing and to add Wilder to my list would be an honour.”

Do you think Joshua could knock out Wilder early if they met?

Anthony Joshua is back on top of the heavyweight mountain in the world of boxing after regaining the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles from Andy Ruiz earlier this month.

Joshua avenged the only loss of his career in Saudi Arabia by defeating Ruiz via unanimous decision. Now, speaking in a recent interview, the 30-year-old has revealed he has a long way to go before hanging up his gloves for good. Joshua claims he has 14 to 15 fights left before even considering walking away.

“14, 15. That would take me to 35, 40 fights maybe.”

Joshua has been highly-demanded to fight a fellow heavyweight mega-star such as WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder or lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. However, he’ll likely be facing a mandatory challenger such as Kubrat Pulev or Oleksandr Usyk next instead.

There’s an issue, however, as both men have been named as mandatory challengers by both the IBF and WBO, respectively, meaning Joshua would have to vacate one of his titles.

“I would hate it because it’s so hard to go round and collect all these belts, it’s really difficult and I’ve kept hold of them for so many years. So to have to vacate because of the boxing politics would be annoying, but there’s things that are out of my control. If I do lose one, I know I’ll be able to get it back.”

What do you think about Joshua saying he has 14 or 15 fights left in his career?

However, an even bigger change could be coming soon. Recently, unified heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua spoke to Sky Sports and actually volunteered to join Fury’s camp for the Wilder rematch as a sparring partner. (H/T RT Sport)

“I think honestly he might beat Wilder next time,” Joshua said. “I think Fury would fight me quicker than Wilder would, so, if that’s the case, I want him to win. Imagine that fight on British soil. If Tyson needs me, I’ll go out and spar with him to get him ready for Wilder.”

It didn’t take Fury long to respond, taking to social media to accept Joshua’s offer if he’s serious about it. Fury also added that, once he beats Wilder, he’d love to fight Joshua next, which would likely be a massive showdown in the United Kingdom. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“I’ve just seen the video of Joshua on Sky Sport saying he’d love to come and help me in camp and that I’d fight him quicker than Wilder, that’s for sure,” Fury said. “When I beat Wilder I will fight you AJ, no problem.”

“I would love to have you in camp, really really love to have in camp, work out for this fight and give Deontay Wilder a proper beating. I hope you mean it because I’d love to have you in training camp with me. Thanks very much by the way and well done for your last fight. Congratulations.”

Do you think Joshua will actually join Fury’s camp? Who are you picking in Fury vs. Wilder 2?
