Donald Cerrone is not only looking to get a loss back at UFC 249 — he’s looking to end an unwanted losing streak.

Cerrone faces Anthony Pettis in a rematch on the featured prelim of the card taking place May 9 in Jacksonville, Florida. The pair previously met in 2013 in a bout that ended in the first round following a body kick from Pettis that folded Cerrone and led to the TKO victory.

Over seven years on, “Cowboy” — who is fired up according to his coach — is now looking for revenge. More than anything, though, he believes it will be a fan-friendly encounter.

“He kicked my liver out of my body (in our first fight),” Cerrone told MMA Junkie. “It sucked. Of course you always want to get a loss back, but it’s just stylistically a good matchup. It’s a good fight with good fun. It’s a fight the people want to see.”

After seemingly going through a career resurgence early last year, Cerrone is currently on a three-fight losing streak.

Although those losses all came against the best lightweights in the world in Tony Ferguson, Justin Gaethje and Conor McGregor, it’s not an ideal position to be in. And Cerrone is looking to snap what is just the second three-fight losing streak of his long mixed martial arts career with a win over Pettis.

“I’m going out there looking for a win,” Cerrone said. “Three losses is the worst thing I’ve ever done. It’s such a crazy and wild sport, the ups and the downs. This is my wheelhouse. Short-notice fights. I want to win. Go out and there and do what I do. I’m excited for this fight and for this matchup.”

Donald Cerrone will be looking to make a statement at UFC 249.

“Cowboy” returns to action for the first time since his defeat to Conor McGregor in January when he faces Anthony Pettis in a rematch on the featured prelim of the event taking place May 9.

Cerrone is currently on a three-fight losing streak after defeats to Tony Ferguson, Justin Gaethje and McGregor. He also notably lost his first meeting with Pettis back in 2013 via first-round TKO.

However, he is fired up to compete next month according to Syndicate MMA head coach John Wood, who has been helping him train ahead of the bout at the former’s ranch in New Mexico.

“From what I see, he’s pretty much the same,” Wood told MMA Fighting. “Whoever you put in there (with him) he’s ready to fight. I think anytime you lose to somebody, there’s always a little revenge factor going into it to try to get that back. That may be in the back of his head. I’m positive this fight’s going to go a little bit different.

“I know right now that he’s fired up coming off a couple of losses. He wants to get back there and in the winner’s and he’s definitely saying, doing the right things. I believe you’re gonna see a fired up Cowboy ready to open up a can of whoop-ass, that’s for sure.”

Like Cerrone, Pettis is also a fan-friendly fighter that is currently on a losing streak, having lost his last two outings. That makes their welterweight matchup have all the makings of a classic with Wood predicting Cerrone to get the finish.

“I don’t think it goes the distance and I think Donald gets his hand raised,” Wood added. “There’s multiple ways (Donald can win). A lot of people think of Cowboy just being this striking guy and his striking is amazing, but he is so slick on the ground. His wrestling is good, his grappling is sick, his submissions are slick. He can win it anywhere: a dogfight, going the distance.

“I don’t see this going the full three rounds and I definitely see Donald winning it.”

Former welterweight title challenger turned UFC analyst Dan Hardy has called out Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis.

‘The Outlaw’ Hardy hasn’t fought since 2012 after being forced into an early retirement due to a rare heart condition called ‘Wolf Heart’. It is a condition which causes the heart to beat irregularly fast and can lead to heart failure and high blood pressure.

The 37-year-old Brit has been toying with the idea of having one more fight for quite some time now. He now appears ready to make it happen after calling out Cerrone and Pettis during a recent interview with ESPN, he said.

“First and foremost, I’m an analyst now. I’m a commentator, so I don’t want to fight someone that’s on a trajectory to a title shot. Because, I’m not interested in stepping in there and upsetting any kind of rankings, involving myself in those conversations. The people I’ve had conversations about fighting, obviously “Cowboy” is near the top of the list, cause he’d be a great pick. Anthony Pettis, that’s a fight I’ve discussed with Felder, he’s discussed with Anthony. That’s a fight we’d both like to happen.” (Transcribed by MMA Mania)

It’s clear from his choice of opponents Hardy just wants to put on one last war for the fans against fighters he knows are game to throw down.

Former lightweight champion Pettis is currently on a two-fight losing streak but shocked everyone last year when he scored a superman punch knockout on elite level striker Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson.

Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone is also riding a losing streak. Most recently he lost to Conor McGregor inside one minute at UFC 246. Before that he suffered consecutive losses to 155lb contenders Justin Gaethje and Tony Ferguson. However, these are the elite at lightweight, ‘Cowboy’ has been able to deal with anyone below that level and could well giver Hardy all sorts of problems in his return fight.
