Things have been rough for former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis inside the Octagon as of late.

Pettis hasn’t put together a win streak since 2014 and is now on his first losing streak since 2016. “Showtime” opened up the UFC 246 pay-per-view (PPV) card last night (Sat. January 18, 2020) against Carlos Diego Ferreira. Ultimately, Ferreira’s superior jiu-jitsu skills got the job done with a rear-naked choke in the second round.

Now, Pettis will need to regroup and look at what’s next for him after suffering his second-consecutive loss. In his last outing, Pettis was defeated by Nate Diaz at welterweight in the UFC 241 PPV co-main event this past August. Now, Pettis has taken to Instagram to reflect on his loss to Ferreira. Here’s what he had to say.

“The fight Game ! Congrats”

While Pettis deals with his loss to Ferreira, he also has some legal matters to tend to with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Pettis claims his hand was cut during a pre-fight drug test by a USADA testing bottle before UFC 241 last year. Hours later, Pettis still fought, but lost to Diaz on the scorecards. Now, Pettis is seeking legal action.

”I had to fight compromised,” Pettis said in a recent interview. “I gave USADA a chance to make it right, but right now, we’re going through the court. I’ve got to sue them.”

What do you think should be the next move for Pettis?

Anthony Pettis is ready to move past his recent welterweight loss to Nate Diaz, and continue to put on exciting fights for mixed martial arts (MMA) fans.

Speaking to MMA Junkie, Pettis revealed he’s down to fight at either 155 or 170 pounds next. As for who he’d like to square off against, Pettis agrees with longtime coach Duke Roufus, that Diego Sanchez would be a fun and exciting matchup.

“I’m a good spot right now where I could make 155,” Pettis said. “Like the Nate Diaz fight, I only fought him at 176 pounds. I only gained six pounds with my weight cut. I want Diego Sanchez. That’s what I told Duke.

“One more fight before the end of the year. I tell myself three big fights this year. He’s available. At 155, there’s no one available for me. I want to stay busy.”

Pettis was bested by Diaz at UFC 241 last month. His career has been a mixed bag the past several years, not putting together a winning streak since 2014. However, that doesn’t seem to concern the 32-year-old, who wants to test himself against a “killer” in Sanchez, who just had a two-fight win streak snapped by Michael Chiesa.

“I feel like especially the fans want to see it,” Pettis said. “That’s what it’s all about. If the fans want to see the fights I choose, then it works out. Look who I just fought. From (Tony) Ferguson, (Stephen) ‘Wonderboy’ (Thompson), Nate Diaz … even before that, I was fighting killers.”

Pettis hasn’t spoken to the UFC about the matchup yet, but did reach out to Dana White, who is getting ready for a matchmaker meeting soon. “Showtime” is holding out hope the UFC puts the bout together.

“I haven’t talked to the UFC yet,” Pettis said. “I reached out to Dana about it. They’re supposed to have a matchmaker meeting, so if it works out, it works out. If not, we’ll find out. There’s a lot of good guys, but I feel like Diego deserves that kind of fight. He’s been around a long time.”

Prior to his fight with Nate Diaz at UFC 241 this past weekend (Sat. August 17, 2019), it seemed like a bit of beef was brewing between teammates Anthony Pettis and Ben Askren.

Pettis was caught on camera speaking to American Top Team’s Yoel Romero, a teammate of Jorge Masvidal. “Showtime” said he was happy for Masvidal after his record-breaking knockout win over Askren at UFC 239. This seemed to upset “Funky,” who voiced his concerns on Twitter, saying he doesn’t need any “fake friends.”

Now that the dust has settled after Pettis’ decision defeat to Diaz, Pettis took to social media to address some of the rumblings of a beef between himself and Askren. The former 155-pound champion responded to some fan comments on his Instagram page who were questioning the situation.

Pettis claims he has “no beef” with Askren after his comments prior to UFC 241.

In regards to his comments, Pettis clarified he was happy for Masvidal’s success, because they’re friends, not happy because Askren got knocked out. He also said he believes Askren will bounce back after the defeat.

It will be interesting to see if Askren issues out any further comments on the situation.
