Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad last met three years ago but with the fights and accomplishments of both men since that point, it’s hard to take that meeting into consideration ahead of the rematch. At UFC 304 this weekend, they will meet again in the main event as Edwards looks to defend his welterweight title […]
Muhammad has beaten several top contenders since his first encounter with Edwards but the Brit’s recent wins over Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington stand out.
Not only did he get his hand raised against both men, he was successful at fending off their heavy grappling approaches, which Muhammad is sure to use as his game plan in Manchester.
Smith spoke during an event preview for ESPN MMA about how he gives the champion the edge because of what we’ve seen him do against two of the best wrestlers to ever grace the 170-pound division.
“I would believe it’s probably Leon. I think that he’s been in harder fights versus better guys, that’s no disrespect to the guys that Belal has beaten but they’re not at the level of a Kamaru Usman. I think the Colby fight was a big deal for Leon, not because of the way that he won or what he was trying to prove, I think that style is impossible for people to deal with including Kamaru Usman, who a lot of people think is the welterweight greatest of all time.
“I think the way that he made Colby look where he was so uncomfortable on his feet he couldn’t even shoot, we’ve never even heard of that. He didn’t even have to defend takedowns because he was so good on his feet that Colby didn’t want to shoot. I thought that was a big deal.”

One-time UFC light heavyweight championship challenger, Anthony Smith has revealed he plans to travel to Brazil in January and serve as the official backup fighter to the UFC 283 vacant light heavyweight title fight featuring former foe, Glover Teixeira, and once-scheduled opponent, Jamahal Hill.
Smith, who is currently ranked as the #6 light heavyweight contender under the banner of the promotion, was scheduled to headline a UFC Fight Night event against incoming title challenger, Hill in March of next year, however, saw the matchup fall to the wayside.
Following this month’s UFC 282 title fight between former champion, Jan Blachowicz, and Magomed Ankalaev – which ended in a split decision draw, leaving no light heavyweight champion, the UFC elected to book another vacant fight for UFC 283 in January, featuring Teixeira, and the aforenoted, Hill.
Anthony Smith offers his services as a backup fighter for UFC 283
Losing his scheduled return fight with the Dana White’s Contender Series alum, Anthony Smith has now revealed he plans to travel to Rio de Janeiro for the January 23. pay-per-view event, in the hope of serving as an official backup.
“I am. I’m going to fly to Brazil,” Anthony Smith said on the ESPN desk during the UFC Vegas 66 broadcast. “I’m going to weigh in at 205 pounds. I don’t suspect that these guys (Glover Teixeira and Jamahal Hill) are gonna have problems, they’re both professionals, but if something does happen, I’ll be there to step in.”
Last featuring at UFC 277 back in July, Nebraska native, Smith suffered a second round knockout loss to Ankalaev, suffering an ankle injury to boot. The loss snapped a run of three consecutive finishes for Smith, who defeated Devin Clark, Jimmy Crute, and Ryan Spann.
Featuring in the main event of a UFC Fight Night Jacksonville event against former undisputed champion, Teixeira back in May 2020, Smith dropped an eventual fifth round ground strikes TKO loss to the Minas Gerais favorite.
Competing for undisputed light heavyweight gold back in March 2019 against Jon Jones, Smith suffering a unanimous decision loss to the former pound-for-pound number one over the course of five rounds.

To get his “mojo” back, Anthony Smith says Darren Till needs to accept a fight with a low-ranking opponent. According to Smith, an easier opponent could be just what he needs to shake his losing streak.
Darren Till is 1-5 in his last six, marking a rocky road for the once top-tier UK prospect. Till final saw combat at UFC 282 against Dricus Du Plessis, where Du Plessis would submit him in the third round. Till has dropped three straight losses, and his lone victory against Kelvin Gastelum could have gone either way.
People have asked the ‘Gorilla’ about thoughts of retirement, but it’s a subject he’s ruled out. According to Darren Till, he still has more fights left and is eager to grace the cage again in 2023.
Anthony Smith warns Darren Till about his strength in competition
Here enters: Anthony Smith. The man who has had his fair share of tough losses and a few losing streaks. According to Smith on the Believe You Me podcast, he believes the future success of Till depends on his strength of competition. At least, until he gets his “mojo back”.
“What does he do now? He’s got to, and he’s not gonna want to, but he’s gonna have to back way up, and he’s gonna have to give someone way down in the rankings an opportunity,” Smith declared (H/T Bloody Elbow). “Which he doesn’t want to do. He doesn’t want to do that because he wants to continue to climb. He wants to swing for the fences and get his spot back and look ahead.”
“…I think the best case scenario for him is to drop way down and give one of these up-and-comers, these young guys, these unknowns, give them an opportunity to face a big-name guy that holds a decent spot in the rankings and hope that you can use that step down in competition as an opportunity to get your mojo back. The flip side of that is you drop one to one of those guys, you’ve got a big f—ing problem.”
According to Dana White, despite the losing streak, he believes Till’s stock has not dropped a bit: “I mean, that’s ‘Fight of the Night,’” Dana White said. “I don’t think his stock drops at all. If he would have went out there and got destroyed in the first round like it looked like it was gonna happen, but he did the exact opposite. He weathered that storm, stayed out of submissions, then he comes back, and you think he’s gonna win the fight. I thought it was an awesome fight. That’s why it was ‘Fight of the Night,’ and I don’t think his stock dropped at all.”
