UFC light heavyweight contender Anthony Smith has responded to his critics by asking who he has to beat in order to get the respect he deserves.

Smith was in action this past weekend at UFC Vegas 37. In the main event, “Lionheart” faced #11-ranked Ryan Spann. In less than four minutes, the former title challenger had his hand raised for the third consecutive fight. After continuing to show the improvements he’s made on the feet, Smith submitted Spann with a rear-naked choke after rocking him with punches.

With quick wins over Devin Clark and Jimmy Crute over the past year, Smith hasn’t seen a second round since his loss to Aleksander Raki? last August. Having endured a one-sided beatdown at the hands of Glover Teixeira before that, many wrote off his title aspirations. But Smith’s current win streak makes it clear that he’s back to his best and mounting a second run for light heavyweight gold.

Despite three stoppage wins in a row, many have still doubted “Lionheart” and criticized the opposition he’s been facing. Smith’s post-fight reaction on Saturday showed the frustration he has at what he perceives to be disrespect towards his record and recent performances.

While he may have let his emotions get the best of him at UFC Vegas 37, Smith has now claimed he’s finished worrying about what his critics say. During this past weekend’s post-fight press conference, the 33-year-old suggested there’s nothing he could do inside the Octagon that would grant him the respect he deserves from some members of the MMA community.

“Who do I gotta beat? Like, what do I gotta do? That’s an honest question, you guys. Who do I gotta beat? I beat the old guys, and people said they were too old. Now, I’m beating the young guys, and they’re not ranked high. What the fuck do you want me to do? At this point, I don’t give a fuck anymore. I’m doing what I can do. I’m fighting the guys in front of me. I’m fuckin’ over it. I’m done worrying about it.”

After his latest victory, Smith made his future plans clear. He wants to run it back with Raki?, who is currently ranked #3 in the division. The pair previously met in the UFC Vegas 8 main event. After three rounds, the Austrian was awarded a comfortable unanimous decision win.

With Teixeira set to fight for the belt at UFC 267, and Ji?í Procházka likely waiting in the wings for the victor following his devastating knockout against Dominick Reyes, “Rocket” will seemingly need to record another win before booking his place opposite the champ. Having made his availability for a December matchup clear during Smith’s Octagon interview, it seems likely we’ll see Raki? and “Lionheart” clash for the second time.

Do you think Anthony Smith deserves more respect for his recent performances?

Aleksandar Raki? is eager to step back into the Octagon, and the #3-ranked light heavyweight has offered up a date for the Anthony Smith rematch.

The last man to defeat Smith was Raki?, and since that night, “Lionheart” has tapped into his primal desire to throw leather. The American emboldened his name within the 205-pound weight class following his last three first-round finishing performances. After Smith’s most recent submission of Ryan Spann, the 33-year old called out his former nemesis Raki? for a December throwdown. Shortly after, the Austrian native responded on social media in favor of the potential rematch.

With just over one year removed from their first encounter, Aleksandar Raki? spoke on The MMA Hour and nailed down an exact date as to when he would like to test himself against Smith. The light heavyweight also emphasized that his second fight with Smith will need to be featured as the main event.

“He had an amazing win on Saturday, he (has) a three-fight winning streak after our fight. But Mr. Smith, be careful what (you) wish for. Aleksandar Raki? said. If the UFC wants a rematch, it has to be a main event, December 18th, and after this I’m going to get my title shot.”

Raki? last stepped in the Octagon in March against Thiago Santos. Many were itching to see how the 29-year old would stack up against “Marreta”. Raki? won the fight by decision and utilized his suffocating clinch tactics against the fence. The light heavyweight kept Santos at bay with leg kicks to advance his strategy too. Raki? did not score the finish, though he walked away victorious.

Raki?’s tear through the 205-pound weight class has been quiet compared to Smith’s last three victories. Normally, a rematch so soon doesn’t align, but the two remain enthusiastic to face each other. With a December date all but locked up, we may get that early Christmas present after all.

Do you favor Aleksandar Raki? against Anthony Smith in a potential rematch?

Ion Cutelaba was not happy with the damage he inflicted on Devin Clark.

Cutelaba returned to the win column for the first time since 2019 when he dominated Clark over three rounds to get the unanimous decision victory at UFC Vegas 37 last night.

Clark did well to last the fight, but ultimately took plenty of damage including his teeth getting all mangled.

Cutelaba saw the damage he inflicted on Clark and was not particularly thrilled either.

“It’s very, very … I looked, and I’m not happy,” Cutelaba said (via MMA Junkie). “(It came from) my knee and hand. (My punches) are very strong, and Clark is a very good fighter. But I’m strong. I’m very tough. But my opponent is very strong.”

As for what’s next after ending a three-fight winless streak? Cutelaba wants Anthony Smith in a headliner.

“I’m ready for a new show, a new fight. … Let’s go with (Anthony) Smith,” Cutelaba added. “I’m ready for you, for me, and an important win. Let’s fight in a main event.”

It’s certainly an option if a rematch between Smith and Aleksandar Rakic doesn’t pan out.

Daniel Cormier Is Happy Jon Jones Didn’t Try To Hug Him After They Fought: ‘No Fake Friends’

Daniel Cormier has revealed he was happy that Jon Jones didn’t try to play nice after their fights.

‘DC’ made the comments after watching Anthony Smith submit Ryan Spann at UFC Vegas 37. As soon as the fight was waved off ‘Lionheart’ stood up, got in his opponent’s face, and started shouting at his defeated foe for his pre-fight disrespect.

“I have no problem with the way Anthony Smith just acted when you talk all that shit and you get beat the way Ryan Spann just got beat we don’t need to shake hands and hug Anthony is an OG and do not play,” Cormier wrote on social media. “Really was an easy night for @lionheartasmith great job!!!#UFCVegas37”

Cormier then referenced his UFC 182 fight with Jon Jones as a perfect example after a fan claimed he “didn’t act that way” after his first career loss.

“There was no hug and I’m happy he didn’t hug me I didn’t or don’t need that,” Cormier replied. “The things that go so far can’t just be buried once the fight is over. I was sad at presser and Jones showed no pity. It was perfect! No fake friends once the fight is done!”

Smith and Spann quickly made up post-fight. The same cannot be said for Cormier and Jones who still often bicker online despite the fact ‘DC’ is retired and Jones is still supposedly pursuing heavyweight gold.

Do you think Daniel Cormier has a point? Should fighters keep the same energy post-fight?

Anthony Smith & Aleksandar Rakic Agree To Rematch In December

Anthony SmithAnthony Smith put on a dominant display before submitting Ryan Spann in the first round of the UFC Vegas 37 main event. ‘Lionheart’, who had just stretched his win streak to three, got on the mic and immediately called for a rematch with Aleksandar Rakic, who was the last man to beat him. “I want […]

Anthony Smith put on a dominant display before submitting Ryan Spann in the first round of the UFC Vegas 37 main event.

‘Lionheart’, who had just stretched his win streak to three, got on the mic and immediately called for a rematch with Aleksandar Rakic, who was the last man to beat him.

“I want Aleksander Rakic,” Smith told Michael Bisping post-fight. “He’s just sitting around. He’s not next for the title. Either I get that fight or I’m going to skip it. That’s what I want. I want someone ahead of me and I earned that.”

During Smith’s post-fight chat Rakic tweeted out to let his rival and all the fans know that he is ready to throw down later this year.

“I’m free in December @Mickmaynard2,” Rakic wrote.

‘The Count’ relayed that information to Smith, who replied by saying “Merry Christmas to me.”

Speaking at the UFC Vegas 37 post-fight press conference, Smith explained why he chose to call for a rematch with Rakic.

“That’s what I wanted,” Smith said. “That’s what I asked for. That’s the fight I’ve been talking about. It’s nothing personal. Me and Rakic have had nothing but positive exchanges with each other both before and after the fight. It’s purely competitive. I want his spot. He took mine, I want to take it back.”

As well as trying to right a wrong, Smith genuinely believes that a win over Rakic is worth more than beating any of the other contenders who are similarly ranked.

“No disrespect – I think Dominick Reyes is an easier fight (than Rakic), but that doesn’t get me closer to the title,” Smith said. “I need what’s going to get me closest to the title fight. I could hang around and wait for the loser of the title fight, but I don’t want to wait. I think for me stylistically – not saying for everyone – but for me, Rakic is probably the toughest fight out of those (top) five guys.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)
