Anthony Smith believes there was a big difference in how he lost to Jon Jones compared to how Alexander Gustafsson did.

Though he suffered an in-fight injury, Gustafsson was soundly defeated by Jones via TKO in their rematch for the vacant light heavyweight title back in December.

Jones would then outclass Smith over five rounds at UFC 235 in March to retain his title. Fittingly, both fighters are now slated to face each other in the main event of UFC Stockholm on June 1.

However, Smith believes a major difference between the two is that he can get through adversity unlike the Swede. And he intends on breaking Gustafsson this weekend.

“I had a (expletive) day at the office [vs. Jones] and was still able to be in there, and Alex wasn’t,” Smith told MMA Junkie. “Regardless of what he says, I think Alex has a history (where) he can get into some fire and fall apart. And that’s not me. I don’t fall apart in the fire.

“Even in the Jon fight, I didn’t fall apart. I just didn’t perform. I think he can be broken. I don’t say that as a way of disrespecting him. I have no beef with Alex, but if we’re being honest and taking about Xs and Os, he can be broken.”

No Game Plan For Gustafsson

Smith also feels he has been overthinking his strategy for his last few fights.

But against Gustafsson, he won’t be having any set game plan. Instead, will fight more like his true self which he hopes will translate to a better performance.

“I think I got away from who I am,” Smith added. “I’m a pressure fighter who counters and swings hammers. That’s what I do. I drop people into ugly, knockdown drag-outs and I beat them mentally.

“I think those last fights, I overthought it. So that’s been the whole focus. Just be me. There is no game plan for Alex. The last few fights, there have been pretty strict game plans, and they haven’t been my best performances.”

Anthony Smith planning to take some time off as an active pro-MMA fighter following his next fight.

This bout won’t be easy though as he meets former title contender Alexander Gustafsson in the main event of UFC Stockholm (also known as UFC on ESPN+ 11). The event is set to take place on Saturday,  June 1, 2019 at Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden.

Smith is looking to get back on the winning path as he is coming off a unanimous decision loss to UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones in the main event UFC 235. Smith was put in this spot once he beat former title contender Volkan Oezdemir by third-round rear-naked choke.

This is a quick turnaround and against a tough opponent. Smith made it known during a recent interview with MMAJunkie that he actually didn’t want to take the fight.

“Initially, it wasn’t what I want to do,” Smith said. “But that’s part of life, is doing what you need to do, not what you want to do. I knew if I turned the fight down, I would have regretted it later.”

Despite this fight, it hasn’t changed his mindset of needing time off after being active to get to this point in his MMA career.

“Obviously, I’m going to have to have a conversation with the UFC and say, ‘Listen, I need a break,’” Smith said. “Just don’t call and leave me be. I didn’t feel like I had to take it. “I’ve been pretty active. I’ve been pretty successful up until the Jon fight, especially (at) 205. I’ve hit a lot of bonuses. I just got a nice paycheck. I don’t need to fight.”

The Main Reason Anthony Smith Dislikes Luke Rockhold

Former light heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith really dislikes former middleweight kingpin, Luke Rockhold. Former light heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith really dislikes former middleweight kingpin, Luke Rockhold.

Smith, who grew up in Nebraska where you treat people with respect, believes it’s ok to talk a little trash to help sell a fight. However, if you’re just talking to be a jerk, then you’re no friend of “Lionheart”.

While Smith fell short in his bid to dethrone Jon Jones at UFC 235, he more than held his own throughout the five-round affair. Couple that with all the time Smith has put into this sport and he feels he deserves some respect. Respect that Rockhold was not giving him:

“The Conor (McGregor) thing, there’s either real beef, or he’s funny about it,” Smith told MMA Junkie. “It’s very clear that what Conor is doing is promotion. There’s no secret there. But Luke’s isn’t like that. He’s genuinely attacking me. There’s no promotion here. He’s just being an (expletive). Which is fine, but you’ve got to answer for that.

“Don’t act like we’re going to be in public places and we’re going to get along,” Smith said. “That’s not going to happen. I wasn’t raised like that. You talk like that in Nebraska, you’re going to get dragged out by your ears and get the (expletive) beat out of you.”

The Smith-Rockhold Beef

The beef between Smith and Rockhold seems to go back a couple of years ago when the Ralph Lauren model called Smith a “bum”. “Lionheart”, however, didn’t pay the comment much attention being the difference in weight classes. How quickly things can change in this crazy sport:

“If you want to talk your way into a fight, that’s fine,” he said. “There’s ways of going about it. You don’t have to convince me. I’m not the guy that you’ve got to goad into a fight. All you’ve got to do is ask. Want to fight? Sure. Yeah. Let’s do it. That’s as far as you’ve got to go.

“And if you want to build a fight, you’re not the (expletive) champion. So what are you building it for? You don’t get pay-per-view points. I don’t get PPV points. You’re not making any more money by being an (expletive). So what are we doing here? It’s a waste of time.”

“Lionheart’s” Code

Smith prides himself as a typical Midwestern boy. That is, he has a strict personal code and his word is bond. So when Rockhold criticized him for taking some time off, Smith stuck to his guns:

“I’m not here trying to be some company guy,” Smith said. “I’m a man of my word. And I’ve told you guys from day one, if the UFC offers me a fight, I’ll take it – if I’m healthy. I’ve stuck to that from day (expletive) one. A lot of people say that in the UFC, but not a lot of people mean it. It’s just a soundbyte to put on your Twitter and make everyone think you’re badass. I don’t say it for any other reason than it being true.”

It’s painfully obvious that Smith and Rockhold have different ideologies. A fact the Nebraska native bluntly points out:

“I’m not a pretty boy like him,” Smith said. “Nobody wants to take pictures with me in the club. I’ve got to work for a living, and that’s what I’m doing. I’m working. I’m not out here trash talking people for no reason.

“That’s why nobody likes him. Nobody in the UFC likes him, none of the staff likes him. None of the executives like him. None of the fighters like him. So he can sit pretty and eat his meals on TMZ and talk all the (expletive) all he wants. But at the end of the day, no one likes you, and sometimes that’s what matters most. It’s about how you treat people and if people respect you.”

This just in: Anthony Smith still despises Luke Rockhold.

Luke Rockhold has been critical of Anthony Smith during Smith’s rise up the light heavyweight ranks, with Rockhold believing that Smith is simply not that talented of a fighter. Smith took those comments very personally to say the least, primarily because they were unprovoked, but that did not stop Rockhold from doubling down whenever the topic of Smith has been broached in an interview. And every time Rockhold opens his mouth about him, Smith finds himself both irked and perplexed as to what Rockhold stands to gain by continuing to disrespect him:

“If you want to talk your way into a fight, that’s fine,” Smith began to MMA Junkie. “There’s ways of going about it. You don’t have to convince me. I’m not the guy that you’ve got to goad into a fight. All you’ve got to do is ask. Want to fight? Sure. Yeah. Let’s do it. That’s as far as you’ve got to go.

“And if you want to build a fight, you’re not
the (expletive) champion. So what are you building it for? You don’t get
pay-per-view points. I don’t get PPV points. You’re not making any more money
by being an (expletive). So what are we doing here? It’s a waste of time.”

Luke Rockhold has stated that he has no problem with Anthony Smith but is merely assessing Smith’s fighting ability in a candid manner. Anthony Smith finds nothing constructive or intellectual about the criticism, though, and while he believes Rockhold must have some issue with him, he is stumped as to what it could be. One thing he is confident about, though, is that there is a very real possibility that Rockhold’s perceived arrogance could backfire and soon:

“I just don’t get what his beef is, and now,
he just keeps going with it,” Smith continued. ‘Oh, Alexander Gustafsson’s
going to beat his ass.’ But maybe not, (expletive). You ever consider that?
Maybe you should focus on your fight and worry about that, because you’re going
to look real stupid if I beat Alex and you lose. Real stupid. Historically, his
(expletive) talking hasn’t worked out well for him.”

Anthony Smith would conclude by taking a moment to inform Luke Rockhold that no one affiliated with the UFC likes him. And with that being the case, Smith poses, how rewarding could a career possibly be?

“That’s why nobody likes him,” Smith stated. “Nobody in the UFC likes him. None of the staff likes him. None of the executives like him. None of the fighters like him. So he can sit pretty and eat his meals on TMZ and talk all the (expletive) all he wants. But at the end of the day, no one likes you, and sometimes that’s what matters most. It’s about how you treat people and if people respect you.”
