Jon Jones has once again reclaimed the UFC’s light heavyweight throne, and he already has an eager challenger.

Last week (Sat. December 29, 2018) Jones defeated Alexander Gustafsson to capture the vacant 205-pound title. “Bones” was able to get a takedown and batter the Swede on the ground in the third round. He picked up a third-round TKO as a result of his ground-and-pound. After the fight, Jones was called out by rising light heavyweight star Anthony Smith.

Smith has been on a tear through the division lately, and a fight against “Bones” next certainly makes sense. There has been some back-and-forth regarding when and where the fight might take place. But Jones is ready nonetheless. He recently took to Instagram to reveal he’s already studying tape on “Lionheart”:

“So much to study, this is going to be fun”

Jones even took a shot at Smith on Twitter:

““Any time, any place, anywhere, I’m ready,” Smith said. “I’ll fight Jon this weekend if he wants to.””

Recently, Smith told TMZ that his management is already working on sorting something out to fight Jones this year (via MMA Junkie):

“It sounds like he’s in,” Smith said. “Of course, [my manager] has already been talking to the UFC and I think that they’re working that out and seeing what that looks like as far as timelines and stuff, but I’m in.”

Anthony Smith claims to have his manager in talks with the UFC for a potential showdown against UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. With Jones reclaiming the title, Smith is the next obvious opponent for him outside of the likes of Daniel Cormier and Brock Lesnar.

For this rising contender, he claimed in a recent interview that his management team is currently talking with the promotion. It’s all about figuring out a time and location for a bout with Jones.

“It sounds like he’s in,” Smith told TMZSports (H/T to MMaFighting). “Of course, [my manager] has already been talking to the UFC. I think that they’re working that out and seeing what that looks like as far as timelines. But I’m in.”

“It’s what the fans want to see,” said Smith. “They don’t want to see Jon go in there and beat up on Corey Anderson or whoever else. They don’t want to see that sh*t. There’s nothing there.”

Journey

Smith was put in this spot once he beat former title contender Volkan Oezdemir by third-round rear-naked choke. This fight went down in the headliner of UFC Moncton at Moncton Coliseum in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. Now, Smith thinks that his record speaks for himself and wants a shot at Jones, who some think is the greatest fighter in MMA history.

“Anytime you take out Alexander Gustafsson with a finish, that’s a huge accomplishment,” Smith said. “So hats off to Jon, that was obviously a great performance. But I’ve seen him look better. I saw a beatable man. I saw a guy that I can compete with and a guy that I can beat. I’m not wowed by Jon Jones.

That’s not saying that I don’t think he’s a phenomenal fighter. I’m not afraid of him. I think that Jon has a lot of people beat before they even get in there. I think people look at Jon like he’s an uphill battle. This unreachable task and I don’t see him like that. I’m not wowed by him. I see a man that I can beat and a person with holes, like any other human, that can be exploited.”

In the main event of UFC 232 last weekend (Sat. December 29, 2018), Jon Jones reclaimed the UFC’s light heavyweight crown.

He won the vacant title by stopping Alexander Gustafsson in the third round. Now that “Bones” is back on top of the 205-pound mountain, he is once again tasked with defending the strap. Following his victory over “The Mauler,” Jones called out longtime rival Daniel Cormier for a trilogy bout.

However, on the UFC on FOX post-fight show, top contender Anthony Smith called out Jones for a July title fight. Smith was serving as an analyst for the FOX network and was lobbying for an International Fight Week headliner spot. But Smith caught some push-back from fellow analyst Michael Bisping, who told Smith to call for an immediate title opportunity if he was going to call out Jones.

Soon after, Jones took to Twitter to poke fun at Smith for calling him out for a fight date six months away:

“This man is trying to wait until July, I got some catching up to do.”

“I just thought that sounded fun. I think we can set the games aside, Jon. You and I both know I need a date and location. You name it, I’ll be there.”

The Nebraskan has earned his way into the light heavyweight title picture with three straight wins. His latest victories over Rashad Evans, Mauricio Rua, and Volkan Oezdemir have been extremely impressive.

Sitting as the No. 3-ranked light heavyweight in the UFC, it’s hard to argue anyone else that might deserve a shot at the title. But Smith shouldn’t wait around for Jones, who could easily rematch his longtime rival Daniel Cormier at light heavyweight or heavyweight.
