SEATTLE – Phil Davis improved to 9-0 with a unanimous decision win over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC Fight Night 24, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to start calling for a title shot just yet.

Yes, it was the most significant win of his career so far, Davis acknowledged at the post-fight press conference, but he’s in no hurry to jump all the way to the top of the light heavyweight ladder.

“Pretty much everyone I’ve ever fought has had more experience than I have in fighting,” said Davis. “So just going through four fights in one year in the UFC has put me in a place where everyone is a lot more experienced than I am, so I just need to make sure I’m giving myself enough time to develop as a fighter.”

In a battle of youth and athleticism against experience and technique, the youngster Phil Davis defeated the legendary Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 24.

But it wasn’t easy.

Although Davis came into the fight as a heavy favorite and had been proclaimed by some as the man who would some day beat UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, Nogueira made life difficult for Davis in the early going, and the fight turned into a 15-minute, back-and-forth battle that was closer than the judges’ scorecards — all of which gave Davis the fight 30-27 — would suggest.

Phil Davis will tell you that he hears way too much about Jon Jones. Not an interview goes by when he’s not asked about Jones, and many a writer has drawn lazy comparisons about the pair. But as fighting talents go, it is easy to understand the grouping. As two of the UFC’s young guns, there is a belief in some corners that Jones and Davis will hold the top two spots in the UFC’s light-heavyweight division for the foreseeable future.

Jones held up his end of the bargain last weekend at UFC 128, capturing the light-heavyweight championship, and just one week later, Davis tries to continue his own forward momentum in his first main-event outing.

Complicating factors, Davis (8-0) is taking the UFC Fight Night 24 bout against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira on short notice. Nogueira had been scheduled to face Tito Ortiz, until Ortiz withdrew after suffering a cut in training that required stitches. Given the late call, Davis had just five weeks to prepare for the most experienced opponent he’s yet to face, and the match continues a breakneck pace for the onetime NCAA wrestling champ. It will be his fifth fight in 13 months.

SEATTLE – We’re having a pleasant little breakfast when Phil Davis offers to “dislocate” his nose. No big deal, he says. Just a trick of the cartilage that leaves it looking twisted and mangled and, well, awesome.

It’s a great party trick he’s developed over the years thanks to old wrestling injuries and the peculiarities of his personal physiology and hey, as long as we’re just sitting here, would I like to see it?

Answer: of course I would.

So Davis puts both hands up to his nose, feeling around for just the right spot, then crack. The sound is like someone snapping a pencil in half.

‘Oh no,’ he says into his hands. ‘Yep, I’m bleeding. Uh-oh.’
