The list of names in Strikeforce’s heavyweight division is undeniably impressive: Former No. 1 fighter in the world Fedor Emelianenko. The man who beat him, Fabricio Werdum. Former UFC heavyweight champions Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett. Hot prospects Daniel Cormier and Shane del Rosario. And the champion, K-1 wrecking machine Alistair Overeem.

The biggest question facing Strikeforce is whether it can actually get all of those fighters — and Antonio Silva and Brett Rogers and Lavar Johnson and so on — into the cage, fighting each other. The heavyweight talent is there. The heavyweight fights came all too infrequently in 2010, and as we take a look below at the state of Strikeforce’s heavyweight division, we offer some suggestions on what should happen in 2011.

What a wild, crazy, unpredictable sport MMA is. A few months ago the heavyweight fight everyone wanted to see was Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brock Lesnar, and MMA fans thought we’d be deprived of having one true heavyweight champion because Fedor and Lesnar would never fight each other.

Now Fedor and Lesnar have both suffered decisive first-round losses, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone anywhere who considers either one of them the top heavyweight in the sport.

That distinction now belongs to Cain Velasquez, who at UFC 121 erased any doubt that he’s the heavyweight champion of mixed martial arts. You know that Velasquez is No. 1, and you can see how 2-10 stack up below.

When we last spoke to Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, it sounded as though he was leaning towards booking Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva for the Strikeforce heavyweight title next.

But with Overeem’s recent decision to compete in the K-1 Final 16 in October, it appears as though that won’t be happening after all.

As a result, Silva has now turned his attention to Fedor Emelianenko.

Silva, along with his manager Alex Davis, were guests on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour, and they let it be known that they were ready and willing to fight “The Last Emperor” next.

“I don’t think that the Overeem fight is going to happen right now because Overeem has already committed to K-1,” Davis said. “We’re hoping to fight Fedor. I think that’s a fight that makes sense. I think everybody wants to see it. We know that there have been historical problems with Fedor’s management, so right now, we’re waiting for Strikeforce to resolve them. I mean, we’d love to fight Fedor, but it’s like Antonio says, he’s not going to pick and choose opponents. He’s going to fight anybody they put in front of him.”

Antonio Silva Says “There’s No Way” Brock Lesnar is Best Heavyweight

One of the great things about MMA is the persistent and often heated debate, about ‘who is the man’ in each weight division. One of the great things about MMA is the persistent and often heated debate, about ‘who is the man’ in each weight division. Of course, this discussion often spirals into the ever popular ‘you can’t be the best if you’re not in the UFC’, which often ends with insults and expletives flying (several staffers here at Fix have wept uncontrollably as a result)

Well, following Fedor Emelianenko’s recent ‘this can’t be happening’ loss to Fabricio Werdum, the fighter’s critics immediately saw this as further evidence that his standing as the world’s best heavyweight, had long been inflated. As a result, there should be no doubt Brock Lesnar is #1 right? Well, according to Antonio Silva (a guy that knows a thing or two about beating large and hihgly skilled people up), the answer is no effen way. Speaking to Tatame magazine, Silva was quoted saying:

“I don’t believe that Brock Lesnar deserves to be considered the number one of the ranking because I think that, if Werdum beat the number one, the right thing would be for him to become the number one. How can you beat the number one and be considered number two? I think this ranking is kind of crazy sometimes… There’s no way of a guy fighting only six times and becoming the number one of the ranking. And what about the history Fedor made in MMA? Just because of one loss, now he’s number three and a guy with only six fights on his professional record is the number one. That’s crazy, man.”

We’ll leave it up to someone else to argue with a man nicknamed “Bigfoot.”
