Ariel Helwani has taken it upon himself to defend the honor of his fellow MMA journalists and the entire MMA community against retired UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub.

Today, we bring you another episode in the feud between renowned MMA reporter Ariel Helwani and Brendan Schaub. It all started with Helwani disputing claims made by Schaub and Joe Rogan about the journalist’s career. It would soon escalate with Helwani issuing a “final warning” to Schaub about mentioning his name again. So naturally, Schaub went and mentioned Helwani’s name again.

“This is what MMA media has to do,” Schaub began on his BELOW THE BELT podcast. “They have to come up with something to get clicks. They have to. This is what they do.

You look at it from the top with Ariel. Even now, ‘Oh, negativity, negativity. Look at me, guys, negativity, negativity!’ Alright, if that’s where you have to go, you probably don’t have any talent.”

The “this” Schaub is referring to is regarding an op-ed article that began circulating about Joe Rogan needing to be replaced from the UFC commentary team. Though Helwani had nothing to do with this piece, Schaub believes such journalism is a symptom of the larger disease of negativity that he feels plagues the MMA media.

“So it’s people, these soy boys that are outside the realm—bro, all these guys, all these journalists, all these bullshits websites, you’re not even in the club. As Chris Brown says, you’re in the line trying to get in the club. You can never get in the club. You’re not it. So what they do is the line of people outside the club who need to be relevant and talk shit to get clicks. Cuz nobody’s paying attention. Unless you book some big-name fighter or you have 17 fighters on your show, nobody gives a fuck about your personal opinion. So you have to muster something, trying to figure it out because everything you’ve ever done has never worked out for you. That’s how these guys operate.

“Even this will bring on shots,” Schaub predicted. “Just saying this. I don’t give a fuck, I don’t see any of it. You guys are sheep, and you write articles like this, or you have to interview 17 fighters (for) people to tune into your show, been fired from every job you’ve ever had. It is what it is. Haters gonna hate.”

Schaub was right about one thing. These latest comments did indeed bring on more shots.

Ariel Helwani Shoots Back At Brendan Schaub

During his “On The Nose” segment of The MMA Hour, Helwani was fielding questions from viewers about a wide array of topics. Among them was Brendan Schaub’s latest comments aimed at the MMA media.

Before diving in with a detailed response, Helwani stated that Schaub’s “subtle” barbs at him were not missed. More importantly, he expressed that he felt compelled to speak up on behalf of the entire MMA community in exposing Schaub’s fakeness.

“I came away from that little clip with a few conclusions,” Helwani’s soliloquy began. “Number one, the biggest one was: This man legitimately thinks that he is better than us. I want you guys to realize that. This man thinks he’s better than us. And when I say ‘us,” I don’t just mean me. I don’t just mean the MMA media. I mean you <points to camera> as well.  Watch the demeanor; listen to the words. This man thinks that he is better than us.

“And he’s sitting back and he’s talking about having talent, not having talent, careers, money, jobs, places in life, pecking orders, what you’ve done, what you haven’t done, and casting all kinds of conclusions on people, all kinds of aspersions, all kinds of fabrications on people when, really, you don’t know what you’re talking about.

“And he sits there and he talks about how he wants to be positive and he talks about how he wants to have a good, peaceful life. Meanwhile, this is the guy that’s been talking shit for the past five years. This is the guy who is literally sitting there while talking about being positive, insulting MMA media, saying that they’re irrelevant, calling them hacks while saying that he wants to be positive. This is the guy, who after five years of listening to his lies about not just me but others as well, finally made me snap. Don’t get it twisted. This is not a positive fellow. Don’t fall for it. It’s, again, fake and phony.”

Helwani went on to explain that MMA journalists devote their lives to giving fighters the recognition they lack from mainstream media outlets. And while he disagrees with the editorial on Rogan, the journalist had a right to express his opinion. He pointed out that op-eds featuring the personal views of the author have always been a part of journalism. And while he commended Schaub for sticking up for his friend, the author was not out of bounds for having an opinion.

Helwani would then turn his attention to Schaub’s own professional endeavors in the climax of his “Heelwani” promo.

“Now, let’s talk about you,” Helwani began as if verbally rolling up his sleeves.

“College football, how’d that go? How’d NFL go? How did fighting go? How did comedy go? How did podcasting go? How did TV go? Did you achieve your goals? Did you realize your dreams? Did you make it to the top? Was your claim to fame being told by your friend that it was time to move on?

“And it was a great moment. I mean, we talked about it on this show. He put you over. You were the biggest babyface in the biz. You had it, silver platter. You had it. You were going after everyone. You were on this show, that show, you were the guy, the truth-teller. But how did those gigs go? And how are they going now? Don’t talk about other people’s jobs.”

Helwani would also point out the irony of Schaub himself spending his podcasts talking about what’s circulating in the MMA media. Yet, he still finds the time to call MMA journalists and devalue them as professionals. He also accused Schaub of plagiarizing the content of others, even dropping some names of his victims for good measure. You can view the full “On The Nose” segment below.

Ariel Helwani is going to bat for Leon Edwards, even if that means taking some swings at other welterweights in the process.

UFC welterweight Leon Edwards going unbeaten in his last 10 fights has been well documented. Unfortunately for the Englishman, however, this impressive streak has been overshadowed by the fact that no title shot has come from it. Edwards has experienced great frustration from the entire ordeal, but he is not without his advocates. Perhaps the most vocal and notable of whom being renowned MMA reporter Ariel Helwani.

Last year, Edwards was slated to face Tyron Woodley in a UFC on ESPN Fight Night headliner. The belief was that with a win, Edwards would solidify himself as being next in line for a title shot. Unfortunately, due to traveling restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Edwards was unable to make it to the United States in time, so he was replaced with Gilbert Burns instead.

After Burns dominated Woodley, he became the new top contender to challenge welterweight titleholder Kamaru Usman. Helwani was one of the few who went against the grain and suggested Burns fight Edwards in a title-eliminator bout instead. Eventually, Burns would receive the shot against Usman at UFC 258 earlier this year but fell to the champion via TKO.

Since the loss, Burns has been trying to work his way back to a title fight. He began this process with a victory over Stephen Thompson at UFC 264. After this most recent showing, one of the names he has called out persistently is Leon Edwards. Speaking on his program The MMA Hour, Helwani argued that Burns’s push to fight Edwards is a testament to a lack of fighter unity in the sport and then proceeded to lay down a rant about why specifically the callout irks him so.

“My thing is, alright, he got the title shot. You got your opportunity. Why are you trying to take another man’s opportunity away?” Helwani said of Burns. “Now, he’s going out and saying, ‘You should fight me. You should fight me. You should fight me.’ A year ago, he wanted nothing to do with you…

“Man, you got your title shot. You got your chance. You got your opportunity to realize your dream. Go bother someone else! Like, why are you trying to take away this man’s title shot who has done it the right way, who has put his head down, who has put his hard hat on, who has been screwed up by the politics of the game, all this stuff? leave him alone!

“Go fight Vicente Luque or someone like that. That’s the part that really grinds my gears here. There should be some kind of bond between the fighters. Yo, man, you just fought for the belt. Don’t take another man’s opportunity away. Don’t take money off his table, food off of his plate when you just fought for the belt.”

Gilbert Burns has also called out Nate Diaz for his next fight, but Diaz has expressed more interest in facing the aforementioned Vicente Luque. Meanwhile, Leon Edwards remains unbooked at the moment but stated in his appearance on The MMA Hour that he would be interested in finally facing Jorge Masvidal as long as the fight happens before the end of the year. Any time after that and “Rocky” would much rather wait for a title shot instead.

Do you agree with Ariel Helwani’s rant about Gilbert Burns calling out Leon Edwards?

Sean O’Malley has shared what was going through his head during the three-round demolition of Kris Moutinho.

During the aftermath of UFC 264 on July 10, company debutant Kris Moutinho managed to gain a huge following despite being on the losing end of a dominant Sean O’Malley display.

Moutinho’s ability to take damage and keep coming forward for almost the entirety of the 15-minute fight did not go unnoticed, and while it was “Sugar” who came out on top with the one-sided victory, the 26-year-old’s inability to put his opponent away is widely considered to be disheartening by many, but O’Malley saw it differently.

In a recent interview on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour, Sean O’Malley opened up on what was going through his mind as Kris Moutinho refused to give up when the two faced off earlier this year.

“In the Octagon, I’m not having any internal conversations. I’m just in there performing. I didn’t care. I’m in there for 15 minutes. Each fight, I plan on going 15 minutes. So it wasn’t like, ‘Oh, my God, this kid won’t go away.’ It was like, ‘Holy shit, my highlight reel is gonna be so fuckin’ sweet; I can’t wait to watch that.’ It was just nonstop melting my fists off his face.” O’Malley explained.

Although he isn’t currently scheduled to fight, O’Malley has spoken about a potential December 11 return, with the American eyeing a meeting with either Frankie Edgar or Dominick Cruz before the year comes to a close.

Do you think Sean O’Malley’s confidence took a hit after his grueling matchup with Kris Moutinho?

[UPDATE]

Days following our report that an MMA organization with revenue-sharing and benefits was set for launch in 2023, MMA reporter Ariel Helwani has released further details.

The organization will be named the World Fighting League (WFL). The new league will be structured so that independent franchise owners will register a team of athletes from free agency or by league entry draft. In addition, the season will be conducted similar to other sporting events in which teams will play away from ‘home’ and compete for playoff spots.

Helwani also revealed the company’s new logo, as well as developing information on the WFL’s plans ahead of their 2023 launch.

* The group is comprised of several former/current professional athletes that have experience in NFL, NBA, MMA. The group also includes a number of MMA world champions and five former promoters for MMA that have garnered respect through years of business. Lastly, MMA executives, matchmakers, actors, and recording artists will also play a role in the WFL.

*According to Helwani’s sources, the WFL has been in development since 2020 and the non-profit was established May 3, 2021.

* Four Conferences will be a part of the league (North America, South America, Europe/Africa, Asia/Oceana).

* Each Conference will consist of at least eight teams, and no more than 24.

* Each team will consist of 24 league-registered athletes, with three athletes per weight class.

*The WFL is focused on its North American expansion first, although the structure in place adheres to a legitimate world league.

* As of this writing, they have six approved franchise owners (four in the USA and two in Canada) and have indicated that multiple proposals and applications are in the works for other teams.

* A Conference will begin once there have been eight approved team owners.

Helwani asserts that provisions are set so the promotion cannot take more than 50% of revenue. Some terms of the contract cannot be negotiated until a union for athletes is established, although that rule can change for franchise owners. Once the union is in operation the hope is that athletes and owners will be able to finalize the terms of their agreements.

What do you make of the WFL and all of the newly released details?

Combat Sports will need to make room for another player, as a new MMA league is reportedly on its way in 2023 courtesy of a number of “influential industry individuals.”

According to MMA Reporter Ariel Helwani, a new MMA organization is on the horizon and is set to launch in 2023. Here’s what The MMA Hour host had to say about it.

“According to sources, a number of influential industry individuals have come together to create a new MMA league that is structured more like the NBA/NHL/NFL rather than your typical MMA promotion,” longtime MMA reporter Ariel Helwani wrote on his website. “This new league would also include an athlete association that implements a [collective bargaining agreement] with 50/50 revenue share, guaranteed contracts, health insurance, career-ending insurance, and a pension plan. The plan is to announce the venture in the coming days, I’m told. They are hoping to launch in 2023.”

The details are certainly enticing for fighters, as the revenue-sharing system in the UFC pales in comparison to what Helwani is relaying. With most major sporting entities offering athletes up to 50% of the total revenue share, the UFC’s approximate 16-18% is seen as simply inadequate to many who view the company’s fiscal policy in an adversarial manner.

The UFC has recently been under the microscope due to alleged poor fighter pay. Currently, with the pay structure in the UFC, a fighter can lose half their check if they lose their fight. YouTuber-turned boxing star Jake Paul has publicly shamed the UFC for their payment structure that deducts half of a fighter’s paycheck if they lose. The 4-0 boxer went so far as to donate $5,000 to UFC fighter Sarah Alpar’s GoFundMe back in June in support of fighter pay solidarity.

Details of the structure describe that fighters will be offered guaranteed contracts, health insurance, career-ending insurance, and a pension plan. In accordance with the announcement, details of the operation will be released to the public in the coming days.

As information about the new promotion comes to light, we will keep you up to date on what is next for the mysterious MMA organization set to take the world by storm in 2023.

Do you think this new MMA organization could overthrow the UFC?
