Ariel Helwani has at last laid all the rumors to rest and revealed his new partnership with Yahoo Sports.
The acclaimed combat sports journalist announced last week that he had “decided to move on” from Vox Media and Spotify as his three-year contracts with both companies came to an end on Thursday. While Helwani admitted it was tough to decline the offers from his former employers, he remained tight-lipped about his next move.
On Tuesday morning, Helwani announced his latest venture on X, partnering with Yahoo Sports to launch a brand new combat sports platform, encompassing MMA, boxing, and pro wrestling. The new platform, named Uncrowned, is set to cover all aspects of combat sports.
In a major update, Helwani also revealed the expansion of his show, now officially titled The Ariel Helwani Show. The Canadian journalist further disclosed that he will be taking on the roles of executive producer and executive editor, reclaiming full ownership of all his content and overseeing all operations.
Helwani built his career at MMA Fighting and Fox Sports before making the jump to ESPN in 2018, coinciding with the network’s seven-year deal with the UFC. His relationship with the UFC has been tumultuous, notably when he was banned from covering the promotion after prematurely breaking the news of Brock Lesnar’s return at UFC 200 in July 2016.
Though UFC CEO Dana White initially imposed what was described as a “lifetime” ban, it was lifted just weeks later. However, tensions between White and Helwani have persisted, leading to several other clashes over the years.

Former UFC interim and undisputed welterweight title challenger, Nick Diaz has named veteran journalist, Ariel Helwani as the reporter he would like to fight the most if given the opportunity, having shared a frosty relationship with the award-winning Canadian writer.
Diaz, a former interim and undisputed UFC welterweight title challenger under the banner of the UFC, last featured professionally at UFC 266 back in September 2021, suffering a third round TKO loss to former welterweight champion, Robbie Lawler in the pair’s rematch.
The bout came as Stockton veteran, Nick Diaz’s first since he headlined against former undisputed middleweight champion, Anderson Silva in January 2015.
Expected to make his Octagon comeback later this year, Nick Diaz recently appeared in a YouTube video where he got chiropractic work done on his body, where he fielded numerous quickfire questions – claiming the aforenoted, Helwani was the one mixed martial arts journalist he would fight if afforded the chance.
Infamously, ahead of a Strikeforce bout last decade, Diaz, a former welterweight champion under the now-defunct banner, as well as the WEC – criticized Helwani during a tense interview, claiming he was an instigator and expressed his opinion on his reporting ability.
Without a victory since UFC 137 in October 2011, Diaz managed to hand former undisputed lightweight and welterweight champion, B.J. Penn a unanimous decision loss in a Fight of the Night performance.
The outing came as Diaz’s first in the UFC as part of his most recent tenure with the organization, while his win over Penn came as the eleventh consecutively of an impressive streak – which included triumphs over Paul Daley, Evangelista Santos, K.J. Noons, Marius Zaromskis, and Frank Shamrock.
Nick Diaz eyes Octagon comeback against Israel Adesanya
Calling for a bout with former undisputed UFC middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya in his Octagon return, which is expected to take place this year, Diaz has yet to be officially booked by the organization.
