Streaking UFC featherweight contender, Arnold Allen has claimed cardio will likely prove to be the biggest factor in next year’s undisputed lightweight title fight between Islam Makhachev, and 145lbs champion, Alexander Volkanovski in Perth, Australia.

Set to headline UFC 284 in February of next year in a champion versus champion fight against Volkanovski, Makhachev will attempt to secure his first defense of the lightweight crown, following an October title win against Charles Oliveira.

In Volkanovski’s absence at featherweight in pursuit of a second Octagon title, the promotion has introduced an interim title to the former division, with Yair Rodriguez, and Josh Emmett set to compete for interim spoils in the co-main event of the Australia card next February.

Arnold Allen breaks down next year’s UFC 284 main event superfight

A contender touted as a potential shoo-in for a spot in an immediate title fight off the back of a TKO win over Calvin Kattar earlier this month, Ipswitch striker, Allen claimed cardio will be the biggest factor in Makahchev’s title defense against Volkanovski.

“You gotta move, move, move,” Arnold Allen told LowKick MMA reporter, Mike Owens. “Yeah – don’t clinch with Islam (Makhachev) – I haven’t seen him in person, but he looks big, he looks strong. Volk (Alexander Volkanovski) is strong, he’s short, stocky, he moves very well, he’s very quick, But yeah, I think the key for him is don’t get caught on the fence, don’t get – I think he could get up if he gets taken down. …”

“It’s a battle of who gets tired first in the takedowns,” Arnold Allen explained. “If he (VolkanovskI) gets taken down, and then gets back up, gets taken down, and gets back up – but is he gonna get tired from getting up, or is Islam gonna get tired from shooting? I think that’s gonna be the battle.”

Prior to his win against Kattar earlier this month, Allen managed to land an impressive first round knockout win over recent UFC 281 winner, Dan Hooker at a UFC London card back in March.

Calvin Kattar

No. 7 ranked featherweight contender Calvin Kattar revealed he will be sidelined until the end of 2023 after suffering an ALC injury at UFC Vegas 63 last month.

Calvin Kattar has had a bit of back luck inside the Octagon as of late, dropping three of his last four bouts including a big featherweight clash against fellow top-10 contender Arnold Allen on October 29th. In the opening round, Kattar appeared to injure himself following a flying knee attempt. Returning to his stool at the conclusion of the round, the ‘Boston Finisher’ was noticeably hurt but convinced his corner and the cageside physician that he could continue.

Just seconds into the second round, Kattar hit the canvas like a ton of pricks and that was all she wrote. Now a couple of weeks removed from the contest, Calvin Kattar revealed on Instagram that he will be undergoing surgery and his timeline for a return is late 2023.

“There’s not much I can say, it is what it is,” Kattar stated. “I tore my ACL, getting surgery in a couple weeks. Should be ready to go at the end of 2023. The goal remains the same.”

Is An Interim Title In Arnold Allen’s Future Following Win Over Calvin Kattar?

The win over Calvin Kattar extended Arnold Allen’s streak to 12 which dates all the way back to the summer of 2014. Sitting in the No. 4 spot in the featherweight rankings, Allen certainly has a case for a shot at the 145-pound title. However, with reigning division champion Alexander Volkanovski moving up to 155-pounds to challenge new lightweight king Islam Makhachev, a lot of fighters, including Allen, could end up waiting quite some time for their shot.

Volkanovski recently suggested an interim title could be established to keep the division moving forward during his venture into the lightweight world. With Yair Rodriguez and Josh Emmett rounding out featherweight’s likeliest title contenders, there will be an odd man out. Considering he has yet to lose inside the Octagon, it would be hard to imagine Allen being passed up should the UFC determine an interim title is the way to go.

Off the back of his tenth consecutive victory since his move to the UFC, Ipswitch native, Arnold Allen has sights fixed on competing for featherweight gold in some form next – even if it comes in the form of an interim title clash against either fellow contenders, Yair Rodriguez, or Josh Emmett.

Headlining UFC Vegas 63 last weekend against New England Cartel striker, Calvin Kattar, Allen managed to secure a second round TKO win over the Massachusetts native after the latter suffered a knee injury late in the first round, tweaking the injury in the opening exchange of the second frame.

Prior to last weekend’s win, Arnold Allen managed to defeat lightweight striking veteran, Dan Hooker with a one-sided first round knockout win at UFC London back in May.

With reigning division champion, Alexander Volkanovski, expected to make a move to the lightweight limit for a title fight against new gold holder, Islam Makhachev at UFC 284 in February in Perth, Australia – rumblings suggest an interim title will be introduced at 145lbs in his absence.

Arnold Allen weighs up potential UFC title fight in next Octagon outing

With a host of talent, including the aforenoted pair of Rodriguez, and Emmett expected to play into the frey for an interim title fight, Allen maintains he himself should now enter that conversation – taking on either next.

“If they (the UFC) are going to do an interim title [at featherweight], I want to be part of that,” Arnold Allen told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “I feel like I should be one half of that. All the talk seems to be that, right [the introduction of an interim title at featherweight]. Everything seems to be pointing to that is happening.”

For Rodriguez, the Chihuahua native managed to score a TKO victory of his own against Brian Ortega back in July on Long Island, after the latter suffered a dislocated shoulder.

Streaking featherweight, Emmett on the other hand, headlined a UFC Fight Night Austin card in the summer against common-opponent, Kattar, narrowly landing a close, split decision triumph to boot.
