Aspen Ladd will replace the injured Holly Holm who was expected to main event alongside Norma Dumont at UFC Vegas 40 on October 16.

On Wednesday, Ariel Helwani reported that the former bantamweight champion had been forced out of the bout due to a knee injury.

“Per sources, Holly Holm is out of the headliner fight versus Norma Dumont due to a knee injury,” Helwani wrote on SubStack. “It’s unclear at this time what the UFC will do with the main event now. Holm, according to sources, is hoping to return to action by the end of 2021.”

Soon after, ESPN reporter Brett Okamoto announced on social media that Ladd would be stepping in to replace Holm, he wrote.

“Per sources, UFC working to finalize a new main event with Aspen Ladd (@TheAspenLadd), following Holly Holm’s withdrawal against Norma Dumont due to injury.”

Ladd hasn’t fought since picking up a third-round TKO win over Yana Kunitskaya back in December 2019 due to injury. With her injury troubles behind her, Ladd was scheduled to face Macy Chiasson at UFC Vegas 38 but that fight was canceled after she struggled to weigh in at the bantamweight limit (136lbs). Ladd was visibly shaking when she stood on the scale and appeared to be on the verge of passing out during her failed attempts to hit the mark.

After the fight was scrapped from UFC Vegas 38, Ladd took to social media to explain that her weight cut issues were more complex than people might think.

Fight is off. Again. All my fault,” Ladd wrote. “Straight up started my period 2 days back and made this cut absolutely miserable. Did the best I could, hit 137, the scale situation was a mess because the last thing I wanted was to bleed in front of the media. The fight wasn’t pulled, my opponent then decided she would rather not go through with it, as is her right. I’m going to get slammed regardless, so let it begin.”

The fight against Dumont will take place at featherweight so hopefully, that means Ladd will be able to safely make weight and the UFC Vegas 40 main event will go ahead as planned.

Aspen Ladd will be replacing Holly Holm in the UFC Vegas 40 headliner on October 16 against Norma Dumont.

It was reported late Wednesday night that Holly Holm will be unable to make her October 16 main event against Norma Dumont due to a knee injury. At the time of the initial report, there was no word on if Dumont would remain on the card. Now, courtesy of additional details provided by ESPN, it has been revealed that Aspen Ladd will serve as Holm’s replacement for the bout.

Ladd was supposed to compete at last weekend’s UFC Vegas 38 event but as a direct result of her weight-miss, her bout against Macy Chiasson was canceled. This short-notice bout against Dumont will serve as Ladd’s featherweight debut.

The rankingless UFC featherweight division has been in desperate need for some new blood since its inception four years ago. Thus, the arrival of 26-year-old Aspen Ladd into the division is just what the doctor ordered. Ladd will be exiting the bantamweight division, either temporarily or permanently, with a victory in her most recent bout against Yana Kunitskaya.

Norma Dumont has also competed at bantamweight and compiled an undefeated 4-0 record in the division. At featherweight, she is 1-1, with her loss coming to former UFC title contender Megan Anderson. In her most recent contest, Dumont defeated Felicia Spencer via split decision at UFC Fight Night: Font vs. Garbrandt in May.

With this new main event, here is the updated lineup for UFC Vegas 40:

Aspen Ladd vs. Norma Dumont

Andre Arlovski vs. Carlos Felipe

Andrew Sanchez vs. Bruno Silva

Manon Fiorot vs. Mayra Bueno Silva

Jordan Wright vs. Julian Marquez

Danny Roberts vs. Ramazan Emeev

Luana Carolina vs. Sijara Eubanks

Ludovit Klein vs. Nate Landwehr

Da Un Jung vs. Kennedy Nzechukwu

Daniel Santos vs. Marcelo Rojo

Ariane Carnelossi vs. Istela Nunes

Brandon Davis vs. Danaa Batgerel

Miesha Tate Holds Ladd’s Coach “Accountable” With Deleted Tweet

UFC women’s bantamweight Miesha Tate has continued her feud with Aspen Ladd’s coach Jim West, holding him “accountable” for a tweet he deleted during their exchange.

Their animosity began following last weekend’s failed clash between Ladd and Macy Chiasson. After the fight was postponed earlier in the year due to an injury for Chiasson, the UFC rebooked the matchup for UFC Vegas 38. This time, the fight fell through due to familiar weight cut issues for the returning Ladd.

Having originally weighed 141.5 pounds, the 26-year-old took to the scales again without clothes and with the use of a cloth to hide her while she attempted to make weight. Despite eventually coming in just one pound over the bantamweight limit, the visual of Ladd shaking and struggling to lift her arms was concerning, and understandably led to the fight being pulled from the card.

Following her latest weight miss, Ladd was the subject of criticism from many fighters and fans, including Miesha Tate. “Cupcake” accused the #3-ranked women’s bantamweight of cheating the scale, suggesting she actually weighed more than 137 pounds.

In response, Ladd’s coach branded Tate a “coward,” and challenged the veteran to try and make weight in the same condition his fighter was in. Further in the exchange, West slated the 35-year-old for an apparent lie she made regarding a fight with Ladd. The outspoken coach removed the tweet shortly after posting it.

The deleted tweet saw West accuse the former champ of lying about Ladd’s team’s demands for a late notice fight, likely referring to UFC Vegas 32. After Ladd’s original fight against Chiasson in July fell through, the Californian called out Tate, and encouraged her to take a second fight in two weeks. Despite suggesting she considered it, Tate cited the short time before weigh-in day as her reason for not stepping in.

Per his own “inside information,” West alleges that Tate didn’t want to fight an opponent as tough as Ladd, and invented false weight demands to hide her reluctance.

“Miesha Tate you are a coward,” West wrote. “Remember when you lied saying we wanted you to fight late notice at 145 but you went on record saying we wanted it at 135 and we know for a fact you said you didn’t want that tough of an opponent? Trust me have good inside information.”

Despite attempting to wipe the tweet from the record, the former 135-pound UFC queen had the wherewithal to screenshot the post in case West followed in the ‘tweet-and-delete’ footsteps of Conor McGregor. She responded to the removed post by flipping the script and suggesting West is the real coward.

“Speaking of cowards. @Jwestgold15 deletes his tweet, luckily I’m no rookie so here’s a screen shot to keep him accountable.”

Aspen Ladd’s Coach has fired back at Miesha Tate after she called Ladd a cheater.

Following her difficult weight cut and coming in several pounds over for her UFC Vegas 38 bout, Aspen Ladd has received some criticism. Former champion Miesha Tate threw some shade Ladd’s way following her removal from the fight card. Tate stated that she through Ladd was trying to cheat. Now following that accusation, Ladd’s coach and boyfriend Jim West has responded to Tate in a since-deleted tweet.

“Miesha Tate you are a coward,” West wrote. “Remember when you lied saying we wanted you to fight late notice at 145 but you went on record saying we wanted it at 135 and we know for a fact you said you didn’t want that tough of an opponent? Trust me have good inside information.”

Ladd originally weighed in at 147 pounds with clothes on. The officials had her strip down and hold her hands up after Ladd was shaking and unable to stand still. Tate thinks Ladd was holding on to the cloth of the ring used to hide a fighter while on the scale.

Ladd has had a long history of weight-cutting problems. She has missed weight in the past and often looks very weak on the scale. Despite these issues, Ladd has only lost one fight in her professional career. She is currently ranked number three in the bantamweight rankings. She was close to a title shot, but now following these issues, her future in the UFC is unclear.

Prior to the weigh-ins, Ladd was actually looking for a fight with Tate. Tate has recently returned to the UFC following a brief retirement. Ladd has proposed the two meet inside the cage, now that a feud has risen it could be interesting to see if these two fighters can agree to fight.

Miesha Tate has no sympathy for Aspen Ladd after her latest weigh-in mishap.

UFC bantamweight Aspen Ladd has had her share of weight-cutting struggles throughout her four-year UFC run. The latest issue took place this past weekend prior to her scheduled UFC Vegas 38 bout against Macy Chiasson.

As a result of this troubling trip to the scale, Ladd’s bout against Chiasson was canceled, which prompted Ladd to issue the following statement (h/t Yahoo Sports).

Image

At this point it sounds like a broken record… But my fights off. I take complete and full responsibility for not making weight. It’s well documented that I’ve had issues with weight cuts in the past not just as a female but in general. There are times where you think that you do everything right and then mother nature comes into play but bottom line is you’ve got to prepare for anything and everything. I thought that I had. I wish that I had the knowledge and the experience of seasoned fighters yeah I’m nine and one, 10 fights in my professional career and it’s something that I’m getting better. That I should be better at, but I commit to be better at as I move forward.

I make no excuses only apologies to the UFC who has invested so much in me, to the matchmakers, to my opponent, to my fans and supporters, to my family, but most of all to my team. Who sacrifice so much for a chance at a win inside of an octagon. For a fight camp that normally last 3 months in this case 5 months comes down to 1 pound. I can only say I apologize and I have to do better. I’ll be better. There are no other options.. as I love this sport and I want to continue to do what I love and be the best… Again I’m sorry. I will be better!

The following day, Miesha Tate reacted to Ladd’s statement. Needless to say, the former bantamweight champion did not give her peer a pass for missing weight. In fact, she believes there was a visible element of deception at play from the 26-year-old.

“It’s one thing to miss weight, it’s another thing to try and cheat the scale and use every excuse in the book to not weigh in properly. Everyone saw you cheat and still came in a lb over. I bet you were every bit of 139,” Tate’s tweet reads.

This isn’t the first time Aspen Ladd’s and Miesha Tate’s name has shared a headline. As recently as last week, we revealed that Ladd wanted to face Tate after UFC Vegas 38.

However, now that Ladd’s rebooked bout against Chiasson has been canceled yet again, there are many uncertainties about what is next for Ladd. And watching this cancellation unfold the way that it did, Tate may not be in any hurry to commit to a date with Ladd anytime soon.

UFC bantamweight contender Aspen Ladd has had an impressive start to her MMA career, but her biggest battle continues to be with the scales after a frightening scene at the UFC Vegas 38 official weigh-ins.

This isn’t the first time that Ladd has had issues cutting weight. Bantamweight has continuously been problematic for Ladd in terms of the cut to 135 pounds, as recently evidenced by her rough physical shape on the scales.

Ladd was originally scheduled to face Macy Chiasson in a very important bout in the bantamweight division, but everything changed on Friday. Ladd originally weighed in at 141 pounds before cutting four pounds quickly down to 137, when she can be seen shaking and nearly passing out as UFC personnel were on either side of her.

FanSided’s Amy Kaplan captured the scary moment that highlighted the struggles that Ladd and others go through when preparing for an MMA bout.

Just minutes after she weighed in, the UFC announced that the Ladd vs. Chiasson fight would be cancelled after the events on Friday.

Despite her challenges with cutting weight, Ladd has had a relatively successful career in the UFC with a 9-1 record overall, with her only loss coming to Germaine de Randamie at UFC Fight Night 155. She holds wins over Yana Kunitskaya, Sijara Eubanks and former featherweight title challenger Tonya Evinger.

Ladd’s issues with cutting weight continue amid growing debate over the weight cutting process in the UFC. Other promotions such as ONE Championship use different methods for cutting weight, including a hydration-focused plan.

UFC president Dana White has said on multiple occasions that he doesn’t plan on adding any more weight classes anytime soon. Highly-touted champions in the UFC such as Khabib Nurmagomedov, Daniel Cormier and others have had issues with the scales during their respective title reigns.

What is your reaction to Aspen Ladd’s latest weight cutting issues?
