Anderson Silva Hospitalized for Lumbago Following Training Session

UFC middleweight star Anderson Silva was rushed to a hospital yesterday evening after collapsing to the floor following a workout at XGym in Rio de Janeiro. Silva complained of severe back pain and temporarily could not feel his legs. Doctors confirmed that Silva had suffered a bout of lumbago, a relatively common low back pain disorder, and he was discharged this morning.

According to Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission medical director Dr. Márcio Tannure, Silva should make a quick recovery, and his UFC 183 fight against Nick Diaz is not in jeopardy:

He felt a sharp pain because of contracture. It hurts a lot, really, but it will not change anything in terms of training. The problem he had justified the pain, but it will not result in a withdrawal or cancellation of the fight.”

Anderson Silva has yet to make a public statement about the matter, although three days ago he was hyping up something called The Spine Chair as “the best chair.” I hope you kept your receipt, dude.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Pulls Out of Alexander Gustafsson Fight With Back Injury

It’s been less than a week since we reported that light-heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson would be facing Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in the main event of UFC Fight Night 36 (March 8th, London), but that matchup has already been scratched. MMAFighting confirmed yesterday that Nogueira has been forced to withdraw due to a lingering back injury. A replacement opponent hasn’t yet been announced for Gustafsson. For the record, Daniel Cormier has already stated that he wouldn’t want to make his light-heavyweight debut overseas, so he may not be an option.

During his time in the UFC, Lil’ Nog has been plagued by injuries to an almost James Irvin-esque degree. Since his UFC debut in 2009, Nogueira has withdrawn from a fight against Brandon Vera at UFC 109 (ankle injury), a fight against Rich Franklin at UFC 133 (shoulder injury), a previously-scheduled match against Gustafsson at UFC on FUEL 2 (knee injury), and a “PRIDE Neva Die!” rematch against Mauricio Rua at UFC 161 (back injury).

Reportedly, Nogueira will be ready to fight again in May 2014, but honestly, who knows. We’ll update you when Gustafsson gets his next opponent booked.

Wanderlei Silva Will Have to Wait Until Next Year to Make Chael Sonnen Swallow His Teeth

(Damn. All those awesome war-faces for nothing.)

We have to admit — we were getting pretty excited to see Wanderlei Silva try to rearrange Chael Sonnen‘s butt face. But despite cutting the most intense, over-the-top, terrifying, hilarious YouTube challenge of the year, the Axe Murderer won’t be fighting his arch-enemy any time soon, due to persistent back problems.

“He can’t even fight until January. He’s got something wrong with his back or sciatica, something is wrong with him right now,” UFC president Dana White said last week. “He’s seeing a doctor.”

Clearly this will just give Sonnen more ammunition in their ongoing debate about who’s more scared of who — especially when you consider that Silva already tried to back out of the matchup (allegedly) unless he was offered points on the pay-per-view.

So where does that leave Chael Sonnen, who has been wrangling for a co-main event spot on the UFC’s 20th anniversary show in November? Though Dana White recently suggested that a matchup between Sonnen and light-heavyweight contender Phil Davis was possible, the Bad Guy has a different idea…

(Props: @sonnench)

So, in this fantasy-world that Chael has constructed, his hypothetical fight against Rashad Evans would get top billing over Georges St. Pierre, the UFC’s reigning pay-per-view king. You can’t argue with that kind of logic. We’ll let you know as soon as Sonnen’s next dance-partner is finalized.
