Daley Wins, Trigg Falls at BAMMA 7

Amidst the rubble left behind in the MMA world this weekend, one event that might have flown under the radar was that of BAMMA 7, which went down yesterday at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England. Featuring the likes of former UFC title contenders Frank Trigg, Paul Daley, and TUF 9 finalist Andre Winner, the card certainly had its fair share of fireworks.

The headliner saw Trigg’s two fight win streak since leaving the UFC snapped by journeyman “Judo” Jim Wallhead, who was able to repeatedly wobble Trigg on the feet en route to a split decision win. The win was particularly heartbreaking for “Twinkle Toes”, whose most recent wins showcased a newfound revitalization since his consecutive KO losses to Josh Koscheck and Matt Serra.

Elsewhere on the card, Paul Daley scored his own decision win over fellow UFC castaway Jordan Radev. The bout saw Daley easily handle Radev in the striking department but unable to finish the resilient Bulgarian, who was similarly frustrated after taking Daley’s back in the third frame and failing to secure a submission. The bout ended Daley’s two fight skid but continued to showcase his inability to make weight, which has become so notorious that even the hometown crowd was unusually silent during his entrance.

Ultimate Fighter 9 finalist Andre Winner also snapped a losing streak and showcased the effectiveness of Muay Thai against boxing en route to an entertaining decision win over Jason Ball. Though all but refusing to unleash the combinations his corner was screaming for, Winner’s diverse attack was simply too much for the boxing based Ball, resulting in 30-27 scores across the board for the TUF finalist.

BAMMA champions went 1-1 on the night, with lightweight king Rob Sinclair unleashing a vicious uppercut to end the night of late replacement Diego Vital in the third round. Middleweight champion Carl Noon, however, saw a dominant first round wiped away as undefeated prospect Jack Marshall rallied back from the early beating throughout the second and secured a TKO finish in the third.

Paul Daley, Andre Winner and Jim Wallhead all earned decision victories at Saturday’s British Association of Mixed Martial Arts card on Saturday in Birmingham, England.

Daley, the Strikeforce and UFC veteran, pounded away at Jordan Radev for the better part of 15 minutes and won an easy unanimous decision. Going into the fight, everyone knew Radev’s only chance was to use his superior wrestling to get on top of Daley, but Radev rarely did that until the very end of the fight, after Daley had already turned Radev into a human punching bag for two rounds. Daley, who came in six pounds overweight for the fight, won 30-27 on one judge’s card, and 29-28 on the other two.

Winner, the former Ultimate Fighter contestant, beat Jason Ball 30-27 on all three judges’ scorecards. It was Winner’s first fight since being released by the UFC following his loss at UFC 132, and although Winner’s victory on Saturday wasn’t particularly exciting, Winner said afterward that his losses in the UFC showed him that he needed to re-focus and take a more cautious approach inside the cage.

“My last fight I was too tense and just looking for a knockout, so this time I wanted to stay relaxed,” Winner said afterward.

Wallhead beat the aging veteran Frank Trigg by split decision, with one judge giving the fight to Wallhead 30-27, another giving him the fight 29-28, and one judge seeing it 29-28 for Trigg. It was an entertaining enough fight, but both men tired out as the bout wore on. For the 39-year-old Trigg, this may be just about the end of the road.

In other BAMMA 7 action, Jack Marshman won a brutal, bloody brawl with Carl Noon by third-round TKO, winning BAMMA’s first British Middleweight Championship. And the undercard featured several exciting finishes, highlighted by Rob Sinclair stopping Diego Vital with a brutal knockout punch in the third round.

Shocking News Week Continues: Paul Daley Misses Weight at BAMMA 7

“Missed it by this much.

Put on your surprised face, kids: Paul Daley stepped on the scales just minutes ago for his welterweight contest this weekend at BAMMA 7, and was recorded six pounds over the 170 pound limit. He has been given two hours to sweat out the remaining pounds. His opponent, Jordan Radev, came in at 170 on the first try.

At this point, Paul Daley making weight the first try would be more of a story, as this now makes the sixth time (by our count) that Semtex has tipped the scales in his own favor.

Apparently, the issue this time is a problem with sauna availability. If that excuse sounds familiar, look at you paying attention — we could just pinch your cheeks. Clearly, the UK is years behind the rest of the world in steam room technology, although you’d think they could fly in a specialized consultant from Finland or something.

CagePotato has been unable to confirm that Anthony Johnson just sent a text message to Daley, telling him to “stop eating so much (spotted) dick.”

Paul Daley has failed to make weight for the sixth time in his last 14 fights.

“Semtex” tipped the scales on Friday at 176 pounds for his BAMMA 7 170-pound fight against Jordan Radev. Daley was given two extra hours to lose more weight, but he opted against it.

According to Liam Fisher, BAMMA’s head of business development, the sauna at the fighter hotel broke at 2:15 p.m. local time, prior to the 3 p.m. weigh-ins in Birmingham, England. The other 25 fighters on the card successfully made weight.

Fisher said that Daley has been fined a percentage of his purse but refused to say how much. A portion of that purse deduction will be awarded to Radev. The Daley-Radev fight has now been changed to a 176-pound catchweight bout.

Daley weighed 170.4 for a BAMMA 5 title fight in February, 171.75 at Shark Fights 14 in September of 2010, 172 for UFC 108 in January of 2010, 171.5 for MFC 20 in February of 2009 and 174 for MFC 19 in December of 2008.

Headliners Frank Trigg (185.5 lbs) and Jim Wallhead (185) both made weight.

BAMMA 7 will air live outside the UK and Canada on Facebook. UK fans can watch the main card live on Syfy and Canadian fans can watch it live on The Fight Network.

Nate Marquardt will make his BAMMA debut on Dec. 10, the organization announced on Wednesday.

The former UFC middleweight contender, who signed a multi-fight contract with the UK-based organization in July, will compete at BAMMA 8, which will be held at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, England. No opponent has been signed for his debut.

This will mark Marquardt’s first fight since his release from the UFC in June after the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission ruled that his testosterone levels were too high to compete against Rick Story at UFC Live on Versus 4.

BAMMA 7 takes place this Saturday night in Birmingham, England, and chances are high that if Paul Daley beats Jordan Radev, “Semtex” will be the one to welcome Marquardt to BAMMA.

“I don’t think it’s any secret that Paul Daley is one of the bigger names here in the UK,” Marquardt’s manager Lex McMahon told MMAFighting.com on Thursday. “If he wins Saturday, that is a fight we would be interested in.”

Speaking of BAMMA 7, the organization announced on Thursday that the card will air live outside the UK and Canada on Facebook. UK fans can watch the main card live on Syfy and Canadian fans can watch it live on The Fight Network. The event will be headlined by Frank Trigg vs. “Judo” Jim Wallhead.

Coming off a quarterfinal exit in Bellator‘s most recent welterweight tournament, “Judo” Jim Wallhead will return to the U.K. circuit as a replacement to face Frank Trigg at BAMMA 7 on Sept. 10 in Birmingham.

Tom Watson, who had been scheduled to face Trigg, was forced to withdraw due to a back injury.

Wallhead (21-6), who trains out of Team Rough House with the likes of Dan Hardy, Paul Daley and Ross Pearson, won his Bellator debut in October, but earlier this year had an eight-fight win streak snapped by tournament runner-up Rick Hawn. Prior to Bellator, the judo black belt was a reserve on The Ultimate Fighter 9, but never received the call up.

Trigg (21-8) made his BAMMA debut in May, stopping John Phillips in the first round. Trigg, 39, has won back-to-back fights since his release from the UFC last year.

Also on the BAMMA 7 card are: Leonardo Santos vs. Rob Sinclair, Efrain Escudero vs. Tim Radcliffe and Matt Ewin vs. Valentino Petrescu.
