Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad

Fresh off his dominant performance against Colby Covington, reigning welterweight world champion Leon Edwards already appears to have his next opponent lined up and chomping at the bit to get his shot.

Following his unanimous decision W over ‘Chaos’ at the promotion’s final pay-per-view of the year, Leon Edwards’ head coach, Dave Lovell, told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour that he would prefer ‘Rocky’ to defend his title against Gilbert Burns next. That comment struck a chord with Belal Muhammad, who defeated Burns at UFC 288 and was all but guaranteed a shot at the 170-pound crown as a result.

Baffled by Lovell’s comments, ‘Remember the Name’ took to social media and accused Edwards of being scared.

“Leon’s opinion doesn’t matter.. his coach doesn’t matter ..the only person I care about is Dana and he gave me his word.. that’s all that matters … we’re next and the fact that they’re showing fear only gives me more confidence ..you should be afraid,” Muhammad wrote on X.

Leon Edwards Snaps Back

Edwards was also dismissive of a potential title tilt with Belal Muhammad at the UFC 296 post-fight press event, but in responding to Muhammad’s accusation online, ‘Rocky’ suggested that it was the promotion who had been denying him the shot at gold, not him.

“lol belal calm down son you’re the least intimidating person in the organisation. I already told UFC I don’t mind I’ll fight you next that’s easy work. You just have to figure out why they hate you so much,” Edwards wrote in response.

Belal Muhammad and Leon Edwards fought in March 2021, but their bout was ruled a no-contest after ‘Rocky’ accidentally poked Muhammad in the eye and rendered him unable to continue.

Muhammad is currently sitting on a nine-fight win streak with his last four victories coming against a variety of top-10 opponents, including Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, Vicente Luque, Sean Brady, and Gilbert Burns. He was declared the No. 1 contender following his victory over ‘Durinho’ in May, but UFC CEO Dana White has not fully committed to declaring Muhammad as the next man in line.

Leon Edwards tipped to fight Gilbert Burns instead of Belal Muhammad brings more to the table UFC

Leon Edwards’ head coach, Dave Lovell has claimed he would like to see his student fight former title challenger, Gilbert Burns fight the defending champion next – instead of an earmarked rematch against top-contender, Belal Muhammad, claiming the Brazilian brings more to the table than the latter.

Edwards, who headlined UFC 296 over the course of last weekend, turned in a dominant unanimous decision (49-45, 49-45, 49-45) victory over former interim champion, Colby Covington in the pair’s tense grudge match in Las Vegas.

And in the immediate aftermath, Edwards, who fought the above-mentioned, Muhammad to a second round ‘No Contest’ back in 2021 after an inadvertent eye poke, dismissed a fight with the Illinois native next – despite the fact the surging contender has been billed as the next title challenger.

“Nah, there are definitely other options,” Leon Edwards said after UFC 296. “I don’t feel like Belal (Muhammad) should be next. I’ve done it before. I’ve won like 10 fights and didn’t get a title shot. So, what makes him different or more privileged.”

“So, Colby’s (Covington) already skipped the line already, let’s see who’s next,” Leon Edwards explained. “But like I said, this is the ‘Rocky’ era, it’s my era now and I’ll keep reigning, whoever’s next. It doesn’t matter, they’re all similar styles anyways. All boxers and wrestlers, it’s what I’ve built my career on. So, whoever comes next, it’s whatever, you know.”

Leon Edwards pegged to potentially fight Gilbert Burns next

And according to Edwards’ trainer, Renegade BJJ & MMA staple, Lovell has claimed his student would be better suited to fight Burns next in his return to the Octagon – who most recently suffered a decision shutout loss to Muhammad at UFC 288 back in May.

“If I had a choice who would be next, I would prefer (Gilbert) Burns over Belal (Muhamamd), because I think Burns brings more to the table than Belal,” Dave Lovell told MMA Fighting. “Because Leon’s beaten him [Muhammad] – well, I shouldn’t say that, he had the no-constest against Belal. It looked like, you can’t judge it by the first round totally, but it looked like Leon obviously had the first round locked down with Belal and he was going in for the kill [up tunil] the second until the eye poke occurred.”

“But yeah, if I had a choice, overall, I would like Burns, but we’ll take whoever they [the UFC] throw at us,” Lovell finished.

Booked to make his return to the Octagon at UFC 299 in March of next year, Burns has been slated to fight Australian contender, Jack Della Maddalena in a return to his residence in Miami, Florida.

Leon Edwards scoffs at Belal Muhammad title fight after UFC 296 he should not be next

Leon Edwards hs scoffed at the possibility of a championship fight rematch with rival, Belal Muhammad off the back of his unanimous decision win over Colby Covington at UFC 296 over the course of the weekend at UFC 296, claiming the Illinois native doesn’t deserve a chance at gold.

Edwards, the current undisputed welterweight champion, headlined UFC 296 over the course of the weekend in Las Vegas, landing a one-sided unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) win over former interim champion, Covington in the pair’s grudge match.

As for Muhammad, the Roufusport staple has been guaranteed the next shot at divisional spoils following a decision shutout win over former title chaser, Gilbert Burns on short-notice back in May at UFC 288, having previously fought Edwards to boot.

Headlining a UFC Apex facility card against the Birmingham native back in 2021, Muhammad, who is in the midst of a stunning 10-fight unbeaten run, saw his bout with then-contender, Edwards end via ‘No Contest’ due to an accidental eye poke in the second round of their main event clash.

Leon Edwards doubts Belal Muhammad rematch next

However, despite Muhammad’s guarantee of a title charge, Edwards has ruled out such a fight, claiming the former likely doesn’t deserve it despite his streak, and looking toward other challengers instead.

“Nah, there are definitely other options,” Leon Edwards told assembled media after UFC 296. “I don’t feel like Belal (Muhammad) should be next. I’ve done it before. I’ve won like 10 fights and didn’t get a title shot. So, what makes him different or more privileged.”

Colby Covington refuses to fight racist Belal Muhammad after UFC 296 he's not a star

Ahead of his incoming welterweight title fight with Leon Edwards at UFC 296 this weekend, former interim gold holder, Colby Covington claims he will not fight Belal Muhammad following his championship fight return this weekend – labelling the surging contender as a “racist”.

Covington, the current number three ranked welterweight contender, has been sidelined since he featured against former two-time championship chaser, Jorge Masvidal back in March of last year, landing a one-sided unanimous decision win over his former training partner in the pair’s long-anticipated pairing.

As for Muhammad, the current number two rated challenger has enjoyed a splendid 10-fight winning streak since 2019, most recently defeating one-time title challenger, Gilbert Burns back in May in Newark, New Jersey in the co-main event of UFC 288 over the course of five rounds.

And ramping up his rivalry with the surging, Muhammad, Covington, who sported a Donald Trump-themed suit to yesterday’s media day ahead of UFC 296, described the former as a “racist” – before shutting down any notion of a future title showcase between the two.

“No, who wants to fight a racist?” Colby Covington told assembled media of Belal Muhammad ahead of UFC 296. “I mean, could you imagine if I said someone earned something off of the color of their skin? That’s absolutely despicable, it’s disgusting. That guy hasn’t deserved anything. I mean, it’s not my fault that he’s not a star. You have to make yourself a star.”

“I’m the one that went out there and di the things that needed to be done to become a superstar like I have,” Colby Covington explained. “What has he done? He hasn’t done anything. He’s out there race baiting. Saying, oh, he only earned this because of the color of his skin, it’s white privilege. Are you f*cking kidding me, dude? He’s not getting a title shot. There will be no title shot for him.”
