Years later, Frank Mir realizes how horribly underpaid he was for his UFC 100 fight with Brock Lesnar

Frank Mir headlined one of the highest-grossing events in UFC history and was left with little to show for it.

Emanating from the Mandalay Bay Events Center on July 11, 2009, the promotion delivered its first centennial event, UFC 100, featuring a blockbuster heavyweight championship main event pitting division staple Frank Mir against WWE Superstar turned MMA fighter Brock Lesnar. Selling 1.6 million pay-per-views, it was the biggest event in UFC history at the time and still holds strong as the promotions’ fifth biggest seller.

With premium cards costing $44.95 at the time, the event produced $71 million in revenue which was ultimately split in half with cable providers, leaving the UFC with roughly $35 million. Mir’s reported purse for headlining the historic event was a meager $45,000 — a little more than 10% of Lesnar’s $400,000. This was before pay-per-view bonuses were factored in.

Mir ultimately walked away with a sum that was still below the $1 million mark. In fact, Mir never once cleared seven figures during his 15-year run with the promotion, making him one of the most underpaid fighters in UFC history. By the time he realized what was going on, it was too late.

“I think when it finally dawned on me was the Deontay Wilder [rematch] with Tyson Fury,” Mir told MMA Fighting. “We still did more buys than they did, me and Brock, and then I’m looking at the pay-per-view cost. OK, the money was there. Who did it go to? Seeing these guys make $40 million combined. I’m like wow. Brock obviously made seven figures off it, I think he made $2.5 million. But I didn’t even make a million.”

Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar

The Wilder-Fury fight generated roughly half of the buys that UFC 100 did, hovering in the area of 800,000 to 850,000. But with a price tag of $79.99, the event brought in $66 million. Wilder and Fury were both guaranteed to walk away with upwards of $25 million apiece on top of a share of the PPV revenue. A far cry from what Mir and Lesnar earned for their big-money rematch.

“Brock himself, a much bigger superstar than [Fury or Wilder],” Mir said. “How come he wasn’t making $20 million? That blows my mind, and I don’t understand it. “Until Conor [McGregor] came along, we had the record for the most pay-per-view buys sold.”

Frank Mir Hopeful that his daughter will fare better in the fight game than he did

Looking back, Frank Mir is understandably frustrated by the pitiable purses he had received, but the reality is that the former heavyweight titleholder simply didn’t know what kind of money the UFC was bringing in at the time. Years later, he recognizes that his lack of knowledge and understanding proved to be a costly lesson in an otherwise stellar career.

“At the time, I didn’t know better,” Mir said. “We didn’t know. Just now as time goes on, I’m looking around like, hold on a second, that makes no sense. A pay-per-view buy is a pay-per-view buy. Why is this sport paying their athletes this percentage of what they’re making versus this one? It’s the pretty same makeup. This isn’t two wildly different sports, boxing and MMA. They’re very comparable when it comes to putting up a cage or a ring, so it’s not like the costs are different.

“So what’s the difference here? Oh, that’s because you have competing promoters, and they know what’s going on, and you can’t screw each other. In the UFC, it’s the only promoter. In MMA, the show is the only promoter. It’s not like we’re going to have a Bellator fighter and a UFC fighter, and they’re both on the card, so both organizations know what they’re going to get their guy, because they both understand the revenue models. They understand what’s going on. They’re not speaking from ignorance.”

Frank Mir

The issue of fighter pay is still a contentious topic in the world of mixed martial arts. Particularly in the UFC where the promotion typically shares a paltry 15-17% of its revenue with fighters — a downright pathetic percentage when you consider that leagues like the NFL, MLB, NHL, and NBA regularly share 50% of their revenue with athletes, give or take.

Of course, fighters today make more money now than during Mir’s heyday. Knowing that helps the former heavyweight sleep a little better at night as his daughter Bella is prepared to follow in her father’s legendary footsteps.

“I’m not as uneasy about it,” Mir said. “Before, it was like I don’t know that many people who do MMA and don’t still have to do something afterward. Myself included. Doing commentary, working for different groups and organizations. There’s a reason why I’m busy. To know she can make a career and a living off it too, it makes that pill a little easier to swallow.

“As the father in me, I’m like OK, she’s going to be millionaire at least. I’m not as scared about it as I was before. Because you have the risk of injury, and you’re not going to be pursuing other endeavors in life that could take care of you financially, and you’re going to sacrifice that to follow this fight career, and then you’re going to be behind when you go into those careers.

“For what? For personal gain, for martial arts and pushing yourself is awesome, but as a father, it’s like what about your bank account? Your security. Are you going to be able to take care of yourself? At the time, I was terrified. Now, not so much. It’s a better world now than when I was there.”

Former UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir has one special request ahead of a potential retirement fight in MMA.

Now 43, Mir is looking for one final matchup to sign off on what has been a truly impressive career. Having faced the whose who of his generation Mir would like to call time on his career fighting alongside his daughter Bella Mir as part of a card in which she headlines.

Mir has spent his recent years in mixed martial arts helping coach his daughter who has amassed a professional record of 3-0 since starting her career. His last outing to the octagon saw him snap a four-fight losing streak when he was able to defeat fellow veteran of the sport, Roy Nelson, via unanimous decision.

Following on from his MMA career, the former Heavyweight champion tried his hand at boxing but unfortunately, things did not turn out as he planned. Mir would lose his debut to Steve Cunningham via unanimous decision before being brutally knocked out by multiple-time heavyweight champion, Kubrat Pulev.

Frank Mir plans dream MMA retirement scenario

Speaking in an interview with Brendan Schaub on Fight Night Flashbacks Frank Mir explained the ideal situation his wishes to occur when he bows out from the sport.

“I’m trying to heal up a lot of my injuries and stuff and take this seriously. Next year, I’m gonna go and fight again because I actually want to fight once on the same card with Bella as my last fight.” Mir told Brendan Schaub.

“She can headline the card — I can open it … How many times is that going to happen in history?” (Transcribed by MMAMania)

Mir would go on to state that he has no interest in taking up a co-main slot in this potential event as he wishes to be able to corner his daughter in her matchup.

In what would be a truly unique moment for the sport it only seems right that someone who has dedicated so much of his life to mixed martial arts should be able to bow out on his terms. Given his popularity among fans do not be surprised if a promotion does come in to grant him this wish.

Frank Mir believes his daughter, Bella, has all the tools to go down as one of the sport’s all-time greats.

18-year-old Bella Mir is already 2-0 as a professional, picking up a pair of victories under the iKon FF banner. Frank said that initially, he was opposed to the idea of his daughter going in to the family business due to how little fighters make. However, he eventually grew into liking the idea of having his daughter follow in his footsteps. Now that he has seen what Bella is capable of inside the cage, Mir told Just Scrap Radio that he is confident she will go down as one of the best to ever do it (Transcribed by BJPenn.com).

“It’s beautiful to watch your child do something they love and get recognition for it and be successful. I’m happy about that,” Frank Mir said. “Obviously, being a professional fighter, it’s not the injuries that scare me, it’s making a living out of it. You are not working on your business during a fight career so you are putting all your eggs in one basket. That’s scary to me because of the financial payback, there is a lot of luck involved.

“You might blow your knee out before a big fight, you might get caught and that was your chance for a title shot,” Mir continued. “Like Conor McGregor doesn’t have the accolades that Demetrious Johnson as pure as a mixed martial artist, like Johnson, is the better fighter. But, who makes more money? It’s not even close, it’s not even in the same ballpark. That’s the scary part because financial security is not easy. She wants to do it, so I’m either going to sit on the sidelines or be a part of it and try to make sure she can be the best she can be.”

While Bella Mir has been training at Syndicate MMA, Frank has still been offering his daughter advice on her career. He knows major organizations will be eager to sign her based on her last name alone, but he doesn’t want her rushing to sign with the UFC. Instead, he hopes his daughter will take the time to develop her skills and reach her full potential before making the leap.

“Right now, there are a lot of people saying let’s go to the UFC right now and as a father, I’m putting on the brakes,” Mir said. “Let’s not get ahead of herself. She’s talented, tough, smart, she has everything going and she checks off every box to be a world champion, a Hall of Famer. Anyone getting in there too soon is not good.”

While Frank is excited to cheer on his daughter during her career, he’s hoping for one last moment in his. He hopes to one day fight on the same card as Bella, and have the event serve as a symbolic passing of the torch as he moves on to retirement.

“One of my ambitions I have said and I would really like to stick to it, is I would like to fight on the same card as my daughter,” Mir said. “That would be a great father-daughter experience and how many people can say they’ve done that in their career? Compete as an athlete on the same playing field as their child. It would be a moment of passing the torch of the ending of my career and the starting of her career. I would have to make it an MMA fight to make that happen.”

ESPN analyst Stephen A Smith’s recent comments on Women’s MMA have angered a large portion of the combat sports community over the past week, including former UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir who shared his thoughts in a post on Twitter.

“Yes I saw what he said about women fighting. Don’t tag him. Don’t even say his name. He is irrelevant so don’t give him a voice in our sport. Send him back to the NBA to make absurd comments about the other sport he couldn’t hack it in as a competitor.”

Mir is a veteran of the sport who most recently fought back in 2019 to a decision victory against Roy Nelson. Also, Mir doubles as a coach for his daughter Bella who is a highly touted prospect in the USA. The multiple sports athlete, Bella has had two MMA professional fights both in 2020 with the first being won by Unanimous Decision in October and the second a first round Rear Naked Choke victory in December.

Smith’s recent comments aren’t the only time the ESPN analyst has been on the bad side of the MMA community, in January of 2020 Smith shared his thoughts of Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone’s performance against Conor McGregor, his criticism was not taken lightly by the community who called for him to be removed from covering the sport at the time.

This most recent controversy, however, has spawned a variety of different fighters and MMA personalities both male and female alike to share their disapproval of his comments. These different responses have ranged from intense emotional responses to more calm responses aiming to educate Smith. There have also been plenty of memes and parody videos of Smith’s infamous boxing workout that went viral around the time of UFC 246.
