Bellator Season 8 Welterweight Final

Press Release – Newport Beach, CA. (March 5, 2013) – After a knockout filled Bellator Tournament run, Welterweight Finalists Douglas Lima and Ben Saunders will have to wait for their long awaited rematch as Douglas Lima has suffered a broken hand. Originally scheduled on March 21st from Maine’s Androscoggin Bank Colisee, the Welterweight Tournament Finals will now take place this summer.

“I’m really disappointed, but I know this is the right decision and I just need to heal up and get my $100,000 prize,” Lima said. “Ben is a great guy, but he’s been in my way before, and I want my rematch with Askren.”

Lima had an impressive road to the finals, with knockout victories over Bryan Baker and Michail Tsarev on his way to a rematch with fellow finalist Ben “Killa B” Saunders. The two originally met in the Bellator Season 5 Welterweight Finals, with Lima collecting a second round knockout victory.

“Douglas and Ben are two of the most exciting and explosive welterweights in the game today, and while it’s disappointing to have to delay this fight, injuries are a part of our game and I have no doubt it will be absolute fireworks this summer when these two meet,” said Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney.

A Bellator Welterweight Tournament rematch between Douglas ‘The Phenom’ Lima (24-5) and Ben ‘Killa B’ Saunders (16-5-2) for the Season Eight crown has been postponed due to a broken hand Lima suffered in his last fight.

Lima earned a first round knockout victory over replacement fighter Bryan Baker at Bellator 90 last month in Utah, possibly breaking his hand with the one punch KO.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney posted the update on Twitter (@BjornRebney), revealing that the two Season Five finalists would meet sometime this summer.

Lima meanwhile posted this x-ray of his broken hand on Facebook along with the message “So disappointed but looks like I wont be able to fight March 21st. I broke my hand against Baker and doctor told me not to fight. So I thank @BjornRebney and @bellatorMMA for moving the final against Saunders to next season. Thank you guys and I’ll keep you updated!”

Lima and Saunders were scheduled to meet on March 21, 2013 at Bellator 93 in Lewiston, Maine. Now the two will meet at a 2013 Summer Series event.

In their first meeting, back at Bellator 57 in November 2011 in the Season Five welterweight final, Lima walked away the victor with a second round knockout finish.

Lima went on to face Bellator champ Ben Askren in April 2012, losing that match by decision. Since then ‘The Phenom’ has won two straight including finishes over Michael Tsarev and Bryan Baker to earn his way into the finals.

Saunders has also won three straight with victories against Raul Amaya and Koffi Adzitso in the Season Eight Tournament. ‘Killa B’ also competed in the Season Six tournament, losing by decision to Baker in the semi-finals.

After a scheduled Bellator featherweight title fight was cancelled this past week due to a broken hand, Season Six Tournament winner Daniel Straus’ (21-4) has turned from bad to worse after an arrest on Friday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Straus, who was arrested under his full name Daniel Mason-Straus, faces four traffic and drug charges by Fort Lauderdale Police. The fighter faces a total of four charges and is being held in the North Broward Bureau detention facility in Pompano Beach on $2,200 bail.

Straus was arrested for driving while on a suspended license, possession of cannabis over 20 grams, possessing drug paraphernalia and possession of MDMA (esctasy).

The Cincinnati native had been scheduled to face Bellator featherweight champ Pat Curran next month at Bellator 95 but was forced off due to injury. The Bellator promotion replaced Straus with Season Seven touny winner Shahbulat Shamhalaev.

Straus is currently riding a five fight win streak which includes a second round submission victory last October in a non-tournament bout at Bellator 78 against Alvin Robinson. Straus earned decisions over Jeremy Spoon, Mike Corey and Marlon Sandro to win the Season Six Tournament.
