Bellator Fighting Championships has booked a light heavyweight title bout for Season Seven between champion Christian ‘Tonton’ M’Pumbu (18-4-1) and 2012 Summer Series tournament winner Attila Vegh (28-4-2) for the upcoming Bellator 84 event.
This bout marks M’Pumbu’s first title defense since winning the belt back in May of 2011 after winning the Season Four light heavyweight tournament.
News of the matchup comes via MMAjunkie.com who confirmed the news with sources from the promotion.
Bellator 84 is expected to take place on December 14, 2012 at The Venue in the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana. The event will also feature the Season Seven heavyweight and lightweight tournament finals.
Heavyweights Alexander Volkov and Richard Hale have already booked their tickets into the final with the lightweight finalists to be determined this Friday (Nov. 16) in Rhode Island.
M’Pumbu has fought once since winning the Bellator strap, losing a decision to Travis Wiuff in October of last year. That particular non-title bout marked the end of Bellator booking “Super Fights” for it’s champions. Previous to that, ‘Tonton’ was able to finish Chris Davis, Tim Carpenter and Richard Hale via TKO to win the inaugural Bellator title.
Vegh is on a nine fight undefeated streak with wins over Wiuff, Emanuel Newton and Zelg Galeši? in the 2012 Summer Series tournament to earn the $100,000 contract and title shot. His last victory took just 25-seconds as Vegh finished Wiuff by knockout in August at Bellator 73.
