A rematch over five years in the making between Lyoto Machida and Gegard Mousasi will be taking place at Bellator 228 on September 28.

Earlier in the day, it was announced that Bellator double champion Patricio “Pitbull” Freire would be defending his featherweight title against Juan Archuleta in the first bout of a 16-man featherweight grand prix. That matchup will serve as Bellator 228’s headliner at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Now serving as the co-main event is the rematch between Machida and Mousasi, per a press release. The two renowned middleweights first met at a UFC Fight Night event back in 2014. “The Dragon” came out on top that night with a unanimous decision victory.

Machida is currently on a four-fight winning streak and is 2-0 at Bellator so far. He most recently knocked out Chael Sonnen last month in a light heavyweight bout, but will be moving back to his old weight class now.

As for Mousasi, he competed last month as well, but lost his middleweight title to Rafael Lovato Jr. via unanimous decision at Bellator 223. He will look to not only get revenge against Machida, but also set up a rematch with Lovato in the process.

These two fights are the only ones announced for Bellator 228 as of now, but more announcements are expected in the coming weeks.

What do you think of Bellator 228’s marquee fights?

Bellator 226 has a main event. The Viacom-owned mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion announced today (Thurs. July 11, 2019) that Bellator heavyweight champion Ryan Bader will defend his title against Cheick Kongo in the main event.

This will be Bader’s first defense of the heavyweight title since winning the strap in the Heavyweight Grand Prix finale against Fedor Emelianenko in January. Bader is undefeated since joining Bellator in 2017. He is currently on a seven-fight win streak, five of those wins coming under the Bellator banner.

Three of his five Bellator fights have been won via stoppage. Bader also reigns as the light heavyweight champion of the promotion, but will be defending his heavyweight strap first. He’ll take on Kongo, another man on an impressive run with an eight-fight win streak. That win streak has included a few close decisions and a pair of knockout victories.

Kongo last challenged for the Bellator heavyweight title back in 2014 but came up short against Vitaly Minakov. Now, he’ll get another crack at Bellator 226. The show goes down from the SAP Center in San Jose, California on September 7. Later that month, the promotion will be getting its Featherweight Grand Prix tournament underway as well with an excellent title bout.

What do you think about Bader taking on Kongo for the heavyweight title?

Bellator double champion Patricio “Pitbull” Freire’s next bout in confirmed.

Freire will be defending his 145-pound title against Juan Archuleta from The Forum in Inglewood, California on September 28 a source has confirmed to LowKickMMA. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani. The bout will be part of Bellator’s 16-man Featherweight World Grand Prix tournament.

“Pitbull” comes off a first-round TKO victory over Michael Chandler at Bellator 221 in May. With the win, Freire captured the Bellator lightweight title as well. The Brazilian is currently on a four-fight win streak. As for Archuleta, he’s on something of a roll himself. He’s on an 18-fight win streak since suffering his last defeat in 2015 after a recent knockout victory over Eduardo Dantas at Bellator 221.

Now, he’ll get the opportunity to capture the first major world championship of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. Of course, he’ll have no easy task against Freire, who is no doubt one of the best fighters the lighter weight classes of MMA has ever seen.

We’ll keep you updated as more fights continue to be announced for the Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix tournament.
