Many noticed that one of the promotion’s most notable names, Aaron Pico, was left off the tournament. Pico was hyped as a mixed martial arts (MMA) prodigy heading into his professional debut, only to be defeated under the Bellator banner via submission in 24 seconds.

Pico was able to regroup and embark on an impressive four-fight win streak, before getting knocked out by Henry Corrales at Bellator 214 in January. In his previous fight at Bellator 222, Pico was again defeated. This time in dynamic fashion at the hands of Ádám Borics via a flying knee.

After back-to-back vicious knockout losses, Bellator MMA President Scott Coker explained at a recent media day why he left Pico off the Featherweight Grand Prix (via MMA Junkie):

“With Aaron, we’re going to meet with his manager either this weekend or next week,” Coker said. “I always felt like after his last fight in New York, let’s take a beat back. He’s a great kid. We have a lot of respect for him. We think he’s going to still come back and be great, but I think it’s time to take a beat.

“Let him train and let him get through this process. He would be fighting as early as Sept. 7 in eight weeks coming off that fight in New York. I think he’ll be back, it’s just a matter of time.”

What do you think about Coker’s decision to leave Pico off the tournament? Do you think he made the right call?

Michael Page’s mixed martial arts (MMA) return is set.

A source has confirmed to LowKickMMA that “Venom” will be taking on Richard Kiely at Bellator Dublin from the 3 Arena in Ireland on September 27. The news was first reported by the Irish Mirror.

Page comes off the first loss of his professional MMA career. After starting off 14-0, he was knocked out by Douglas Lima at Bellator 221 back in May. The knockout came just 35 seconds into the second round of the fight, which was part of the Bellator Welterweight Grand Prix Tournament.

With the knockout loss, Page was eliminated from the tournament in the semi-finals. Now, he hopes to bounce back against Kiely. Kiely is just four fights into his professional MMA career. He started off with a record of 2-0 before being submitted by Alex Lohore in November of 2017.

Kiely then made his Bellator debut at Bellator 217 in February, defeating Mickael Bucher with a first-round TKO. Now, he hopes to pull off a major upset and hand page the second consecutive loss of his career.

Both Page and Kiely have been engaging in a war-of-words with one another as of late, so expect this one to have a bit of extra motivation behind it for both fighters.

What do you think about Page returning at Bellator Dublin?

It looks like Fedor Emelianenko’s retirement tour with Bellator could feature a stop in Japan.

Bellator president Scott Coker spoke to “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show” this week and discussed the possibility of running a show in Japan. The show would ideally be a cross-promotion event with RIZIN in December (via BJPenn.com):

“There’s nothing confirmed,” Coker said. “As people already know, we’ve been talking to Sakakibara about doing some type of event together. We haven’t decided if it’s going to be a ‘co-pro,’ fight sharing, a Bellator event by itself.

“But I’d love nothing more than to be in Japan sometime in December throwing a big fight there at Saitama Super Arena, where all the big fights happen.”

In regards to who Fedor could fight on the Japan card, he threw out potential names such as Josh Barnett and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, two very big names amongst the Japanese mixed martial arts (MMA) community:

“Whether it’s a Japanese fighter or he fights (Quinton) ‘Rampage’ Jackson or Josh Barnett, or whoever, I think it would just be a magical night to see him back in the Bellator cage in Tokyo,” Coker said.

Fedor competed regularly in Japan in the early years of his MMA career. However; once he started fighting for promotions such as Affliction, Strikeforce, and Bellator, Fedor’s appearances in Japan have become rarer in recent years.

What do you think about Fedor possibly returning to Japan along with Bellator?

The first round of the grand prix will take place across Bellator 226 and Bellator 228, both of which take place in September. You can see the full grand prix bouts below:

Bellator 226 — September 7

  • Sam Sicilia vs. Pedro Carvalho
  • Daniel Straus vs. Derek Campos

  • Emmanuel Sanchez vs. Tywan Claxton

Bellator 228 — September 28

  • Patricio Freire vs. Juan Archuleta

  • Darrion Caldwell vs. Henry Corrales
  • Daniel Weichel vs. Saul Rogers

Patricio Freire, of course, is the reigning featherweight champion and his fight against Juan Archuleta was already announced. Should he win the grand prix, he will not only retain his 145-pound crown, but will also be the recipient of a $1 million prize.

A notable name that is missing in the grand prix is Aaron Pico, who is coming off two knockout losses. Coker confirmed that they were taking a step back with him, but it’s always possible he steps in as a replacement should anyone have to pull out.
