Bellator two-weight champion Ryan Bader will finally defend his light heavyweight title.

Bader is set to meet Vadim Nemkov in a Bellator event scheduled for May 9 at the SAP Center in San Jose, California.

The former UFC star has exclusively fought at heavyweight in his last four outings. His last light heavyweight title defense, meanwhile, came in November 2017 when he knocked out Linton Vassell.

However, he will finally return to his old weight class to take on the red-hot Nemkov who is on a four-fight winning streak since debuting for Bellator in 2017. Nemkov most recently submitted former middleweight champion Rafael Carvalho back in October.

“I’m a 205er, been a 205er my whole career, and I want to go back down there,” Bader said (via MMA Junkie). “I owe it to the division to come back down.

“… I wouldn’t have held up the belt if I wasn’t gonna go back down there, and now’s the time.”

Bader is coming off a no contest against Cheick Kongo after an accidental eye poke during their Bellator 226 heavyweight title clash in September. In total, Bader is undefeated in his last eight fights.

What do you think of the matchup? Can Nemkov cause an upset against Bader?

Bellator two-weight champion Ryan Bader was certainly impressed by Jiri Prochazka’s performance on New Year’s Eve.

Prochazka defended his light heavyweight title following a first-round knockout of UFC veteran C.B. Dollaway at RIZIN 20 in Saitama, Japan. It puts the Czech star on a 10-fight winning streak with his last loss coming in 2015.

And Bader decided to call him out soon after.

“Congrats #jiriprochazka . we couldn’t make it happen in @rizin_PR so let’s do this in the @BellatorMMA cage. LHW title on the line,” Bader tweeted.

There was talk of a cross-promotional fight between Bader and Prochazka earlier this year only for it not to come to fruition. But given Bellator and RIZIN’s continued partnership in recent times, it’s entirely possible that it could happen in 2020.

Bader is undefeated in his last eight but hasn’t defended his light heavyweight title since November 2017. However, Bellator president Scott Coker expects him to defend both his titles in 2020 as well as compete four times.

Maybe a super fight with Prochazka could be one of those fights.

What do you think of a Bader vs. Prochazka fight? Who would win?

Ryan Bader has two divisions to tend to in Bellator, but president Scott Coker expects him to do so successfully.

Coker, who has been very high on his current light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, recently spoke on Bader at a media scrum. The Bellator boss divulged that Bader is planning on fighting again in March to defend his 205-pound title. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“Ryan, my understanding is he wants to fight sometime in March, and he’s going to defend his 205lbs belt, that’s what he wants to do so we’re going to do that. We’ll hopefully have a location and opponent and all the details to announce sometime early in January,” Coker said.

Many double champions in the past, such as Conor McGregor, Henry Cejudo, and Daniel Cormier, have remained at the heavier weight class after being reluctant to cut down once again, ultimately vacating one of their titles. However, Coker expects Bader to defend both the heavyweight and light heavyweight thrones in 2020.

“Yeah, he’s going to defend both belts until he loses one. That’s just how it’s going to be. But we have a lot of guys to give him some good competition, so I think that him coming down to 205 to start it off, then I want to keep him busy next year, I’d like to have him fight at least three times, maybe four times next year,” Coker said.

Do you think Bader will successfully defend both the heavyweight and light heavyweight titles in 2020?
