At Thursday night’s WEC 53, lightweight champion Ben Henderson and challenger Anthony Pettis will have the enviable task of closing out the lights on the WEC, a promotion that never seemed to fail to deliver high-octane fights filled with skill, heart, and most importantly to many fans, finishes.

Fittingly, a tangle between the duo promises at best, a fight with a conclusive finish, and at worst, an exciting scrap between two men fighting for a chance to be the final WEC lightweight champion as well as the next UFC championship contender.

For a WEC fight, the stakes have never been higher.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – As of today, the WEC is still their home. By Friday morning, it will just be a memory.

The WEC fighters and staff, they know this. At least, they know it in a hypothetical sense, the way you know that nothing lasts forever. But when the final fight is over at WEC 53 and the little blue cage is taken apart and packed away for the last time, that’s when it’s going to get real.

Even with as much as they’ve thought about this day over the past couple months, nobody can be sure exactly how that moment will feel when it arrives.

“I think it’s going to be kind of bittersweet,” said WEC lightweight champion Ben Henderson. “It’s already bittersweet to me now. I try not to think about it too much, but it’s already pretty bittersweet to me. It’s been great. It’s been a great ride.”

Dana WhiteIn the week and a half since the Finale of The Ultimate Fighter Season 12, speculation has run rampant about who the coaches will be for the show’s 13th season, which will begin taping in early 2011. UFC President Dana White said on Wednesday that he’s about 48 hours away from knowing the coaches’ identities.

“We should have it done by Friday,” White said at a press conference in Rio de Janeiro, where he announced that the UFC would host a fight card in Brazil in August.
