At the UFC’s upcoming return to Tampa on December 14, Billy Quarantillo is looking to get back in the win column when he takes on a veteran of the featherweight division. In what will be the 25th fight of his UFC tenure, “Killer” Cub Swanson will also look to bounce back.
In a recent interview with James Lynch for Fight Bananas, Quarantillo provided an interesting key point about his preparations for his next fight that in turn, will bring a significant change to his corner for this particular contest. The 35-year old has spent a large amount of 2024 training alongside PFL and ex-UFC fighter, Shane Burgos.
The two men faced off inside the Octagon three years ago at UFC 268 in Madison Square Garden where they put on one of the best fights of the year. Unfortunately, they had the tough task of following the undisputed fight of the year between Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler which opened the main card.
During Burgos’ time in the UFC, he fought and defeated Swanson via split decision in May of 2019 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Quarantillo said that the time that he has spent training with Burgos and the fact that he has experience sharing the cage with Swanson made him the right man to have in his corner for this fight.
“We’re locked in. We got Shane Burgos, my old nemesis, he’s actually going to be in my corner which is pretty cool. He has a win over Cub Swanson and he moved down here to Tampa about six months ago and we just hit it off right away. He’s been at my gym pretty much every week helping me out with different aspects of my game, he obviously knows Cub’s game really well and he has some things that he knows will work well on him so I invited him out to my corner.”

Snapping his two-fight losing skid in his Octagon comeback, veteran Muay Thai striker, Edson Barboza has bounced back to the winner’s enclosure in a big way — stopping Billy Quarantillo with a stunning fifth round flying knee knockout in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night Kansas City.
Without a victory since May 2021 knockout win over Shane Burgos, Nova Friburgo veteran, Barboza had made his return tonight against Quarantillo following a run of back-to-back defeats against both Giga Chikadze, and Bryce Mitchell.
Returning to the winner’s enclosure in spectacular fashion, Barboza managed to solidify his status within the division top-15 at the featherweight limit, Barboza stopped Quarantillo with a brutal counter knee, slumping the Dana White‘s Contender Series alum with a thunderous knockout triumph.

The featherweight standouts will do battle on April 15 when the promotion returns to Kansas City for UFC Fight Night: Holloway vs. Allen. Barboza will enter the bout looking to avoid a third-straight loss after suffering defeats at the hands of Giga Chikadze and Bryce Mitchell. For Billy Quarantillo, the New York native plans to make it two in a row after delivering a second-round knockout against Alex Hernandez in December. Ahead of his clash with the Brazilian fan-favorite, Billy Quarantillo spoke with Alex Lerman in a LowKick MMA exclusive to discuss his mindset going into the highly anticipated bout.
There was a time when a young Billy Quarantillo, who was still navigating the world of combat sports, legitimately feared the idea of stepping into the cage with a fighter like Edson Barboza. More than a decade later, Billy Q has built up his confidence through hard work in the gym and perseverance inside the Octagon making it the perfect time to test himself against an icon of the sport like Edson Barboza.
“It feels like it’s a long time coming. It’s one of the fights that… You know, I remember him knocking out Terry Etim back in like 2012 and I wasn’t even a pro fighter yet and I remember watching that fight back then and being like, ‘Man, you’re gonna have to fight guys like this later on. You better be ready for that.’ And at the time thinking, ‘Oh my god, I do not want to fight this guy Edson Barboza.’ That was the mentality. I didn’t even want to fight a guy like Terry Etim at the time because he was a good striker.
“But as the years go on. As my confidence grew and getting better every day in the gym, learning from my mistakes, learning from winning and losing, and the trials and tribulations of being a professional now for 10 years, now’s the right time where I think I could fight anyone in the world and still have a lot of confidence and not have that nervous energy like, ‘Oh my god, this is Clay Guida or this is Edson Barboza or so-and-so. It took me a long time to get to this point, but I think this is perfect timing.”
Billy Quarantillo Believes He Has Multiple Paths to Victory Against Edson Barboza
Without divulging too much information, Billy Quarantillo shared his strategy going into their Fight Night showdown.
“He’s obviously a really good striker. I think a lot of people underestimate my striking. I’ve been striking for 13-plus years with boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing. Learning different stuff. Adding a lot of new tools. There’s a lot of tools that I’ve never used in fights before that I’ve been doing for years and of course my grappling, my wrestling. I’m a black belt in jiu-jitsu. I believe he’s a black belt in jiu-jitsu as well. I think everyone in Brazil is a black belt in jiu-jitsu. I’m not too sure, but there’s a lot of different ways I can win.
“Just my game plan that I’m going in there with, my coaching, my coaching staff, and myself we got together and kind of talked about it. We broke down some of his fights. And obviously, there’s a lot of film on him, but I think the last few fights have really given a blueprint on what you need to do to beat him. Of course, the losses that he’s taken have been against really good guys so I need to execute at a super high level and I can’t make any big mistakes.”
With Edson Barboza currently occupying the No. 14 spot on the UFC featherweight rankings, a win for Billy Quarantillo will likely push him into the division’s top 15, setting him up for a significant step up in competition going forward.

Brazil’s Edson Barboza has been a staple of the UFC for over a decade. The kick-centric fighter made his UFC debut in late 2010 and has since fought in over 25 bouts in the organization. Along the way, he has faced tons of notable fights such as Paul Felder, Justin Gaethje, Dan Hooker, Kevin Lee, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Gilbert Melendez, Beneil Dariush, Anthony Pettis, Tony Ferguson, Michael Johnson, Bobby Green, Donald Cerrone, among others. The 36-year-old athlete has had one of the toughest strength of schedules in MMA history.
Barboza had spent most of his career at lightweight but began cutting to featherweight in 2020. He has gone 2-3 in the division since then. Currently, the Brazilian fighter is on a two-fight skid against Bryce Mitchell and Giga Chikadze.
Billy Quarantillo entered the UFC in 2019 after a stint on Dana White‘s Contender Series. The US-born Quarantillo has put together a record at featherweight of 5-2 and is not ranked in the top 15.
With a win over Edson Barboza, Quarantillo potentially can crack into the top rankings. The two fighters are booked for a fight later this year on April 15 at a UFC Fight Night event.

Turning in his first victory since July of last year when he stopped Gabriel Benitez with strikes — Billy Quarantillo rebounds to the winner’s enclosure on the preliminary card of UFC 282 tonight against Alexander Hernandez, rallying to secure a second round standing TKO win.
Quarantillo, who had entered tonight’s clash with Hernandez off the back of a unanimous decision loss to promotional alum, Shane Burgos at UFC 268 back in November of last year, dealt with some significant adversity in the opening round his clash with Hernandez, who had made his featherweight divisional bow in tonight’s preliminary card outing.
Forcing Hernandez to fight off the fence throughout the second round ahead of the eventual stoppage on the feet, Quarantillo poured forward with pressure, landing a series of knees as he swelled the face of the former, lodging his seventeenth career triumph and eighth knockout win in the process.
