BJ Penn is one of the greatest MMA fighters of all-time, but it has been a rough ride for him over the last few years.

He has retired from the sport three previous times. Penn, who has been an icon to the MMA community, has won some big fights as a lightweight and welterweight in the UFC.

He even captured both titles in the weight divisions during the 2000s. By looking at his fight record, he has gone 1-7-1 since April 2010.

Just like every other fighter, there are ups and downs. Now, he is in the latter stages of his fighting career, which have been filled with disappointment.

He recently decided to drop down to featherweight, and it lasted for three fights. He was TKO’d by Frankie Edgar and Yair Rodriguez before losing a majority decision to Dennis Siver this past June.

Penn recently went on record by stating (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting) that he would consider coming back for a fight in his home state of Hawaii.

The promotion may consider booking an event here due to Max Holloway holding the featherweight title.

If they did hold a show in the state then it would likely be at Honolulu’s Alohoa Stadium. Thus, the UFC Hall of Famer wants to be a part of the action.

“I wouldn’t go around talking to the UFC and asking them to get me a fight somewhere, but if something happened and the UFC came to Hawaii,” Penn told Honolulu television station KHON, “I’m still young enough to do it. I don’t see how I can turn that particular fight down.”

“That would be unbelievable. You see all kinds of rumors and stuff and the last time I was in Vegas I saw the MMA commission from Hawaii and someone representing Aloha Stadium up there so it’s interesting. I would love to see something happen. It would mean everything. Like I said though, I’m not even fighting so maybe I just sit back and watch.”

Penn recently went on record by stating that fight fans have seen the last him at featherweight, which may come as a relief to some of his fans. This former UFC champion told MMAnytt that at the moment he has no plans on fighting again.

“I’ve got nothing scheduled,” said Penn. “I’m just cruising. I don’t know, I guess I don’t know what to say. The door is always open. The door is always open. I don’t ever want to say ‘never’ but I don’t have any plans on fighting. But if you’ve got an idea that you think would work well with me, give me a call.”

Despite the fact that rumors were going around back in January that Penn could fight Ashkan Mokhtarian in a 145-pound bout at UFC 221, Penn didn’t take the fight and is enjoying his free time.

Despite the fact that rumors were going around over the weekend that Penn could fight Ashkan Mokhtarian in a 145-pound bout at UFC 221 next month, Penn addressed the rumors during a recent interview.

“I wish,” Penn said to BJPenn.com. “But as of right now there is no plans of me fighting.”

Penn has retired from the sport three previous times. Although he has yet to announce his retirement again, he noted that he doesn’t “feel the fire to compete right now.”

“I should have never fought at 145,” Penn said. “It was a bad decision to move down in weight at my age. Maybe if I had made the move in my early 20s it would have been different. But I did not feel good at 145.”

Since making his return to the UFC this past January, BJ Penn has suffered back-to-back losses inside the Octagon to the likes of Yair Rodriguez and Dennis Siver.

The two losses marked five-straight defeats for the Hawaiian in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. In his most recent outing Penn suffered a Majority Decision loss to Dennis Siver this past June. Fast-forward five months later and Penn’s recent comments yesterday (Tues. November 22, 2017) on BJ Penn Radio indicate that he doesn’t ‘feel the fire to compete’ anymore (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I’m just hanging out. I’m just relaxing. I haven’t really been training or anything,” Penn explained.

“I don’t know, I don’t feel the fire to compete right now. I’m just kinda hanging out and, I don’t know, I don’t want to scare anybody and say, ‘Yeah I’m fighting again,’ or anything. I mean, if I was knocking out guys in the gym all of the time, then maybe I’d be thinking about it. But I’m gonna go back and start training for fun and, I don’t know, just enjoy myself. Just take it easy and enjoy myself. I do see, though, that there’s awesome people — I don’t know if they just took better care of their bodies or whatever, but you see them, there’s people in their forties, one or two years older than me, or even way older than me (who still compete).

“But it is, it’s about fire,” Penn continued. “It’s about that burning drive and that burning desire on the inside to want to be someone, want to be something, make a name for yourself, gain some respect, make a life for yourself. That is a big part of the whole thing. So, when you do reach all of your dreams that you ever wanted to reach, I guess that’s when the fight begins.”

Penn claims that at the moment he’s only training for fun, but isn’t ruling out anything in regards to his fighting future just yet:

“We’ll see,” Penn said. “You never know, but I haven’t been grappling much in the past many years, I guess. I’ve been doing more stand-up fighting and trying to take someone to the ground, but I haven’t been grappling as much as I used to. But if I go and I just train for fun right now, we’ll see; maybe train for four or five months and see how I feel, then just take it from there. See how I feel next year, and you never know, maybe I’ll do some grappling. We’ll see. Never say never about anything.”

At this point in his life Penn is focused on raising his children and will train sporadically as he journeys onwards. While still not making any official decision at the moment, he still left the door open for a possible return to action:

“I’m going to be taking it a day at a time and just raising the kids,” Penn said. “We’ll see. I’ll be training, but we’ll see. You never know what happens next year. Not saying I’m going to fight or anything, but who knows what’s going to happen.”
