March 3 event has been canned, on what would have been first part of double header on the eve of UFC 209.

What was first reported on MMAjunkie on Tuesday has also been confirmed by UFC.

While UFC Fight Night 106 will no longer go ahead; it is worth noting that no details (venue, fight details) were confirmed for the card. No reason has been given by the promotion for the cancellation.

In addition to the scrapping of this event, UFC 208 was also canceled after confirmation of a date [January 21] and venue [Anaheim, California]. UFC 208 has been subsequently adjusted to Feb. 11 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Anaheim will host an event on August 5, however.

There is no speculation that UFC 209 on March 4 at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena will be affected, with details of a headlining, rematch between welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and Steven Thompson confirmed on Monday. “Wonderboy” spoke to Fox Sports, confirming that he had agreed to the bout before Christmas:

“I just signed the contract that was put in front of me. I didn’t ask for it, I didn’t beg for it. We signed it and sent it right back.

We didn’t negotiate more money or anything. Signed it and sent it back.

“He’s got the bout agreement and he’s probably looking at it right now. UFC wants this fight to happen. We just have unfinished business. As a champion for me, if it was the other way around and I was in Tyron’s shoes, I just couldn’t feel right moving on from that last fight. It was a draw. I didn’t win and there’s a lot of fans that would see this as unfinished business and I just can’t leave it that way. That’s not who I am.

“As a champion, he should be taking this fight because we have not yet determined the winner of it.”

Woodley’s subsequent confirmation of the date has all but tied up an eagerly anticipated 2nd fight between the two, following the [majority] draw decision at UFC 205 which saw the champion retain his belt.

“T-Wood” stated (Via Fox Sports):

“March 4, UFC 209 in Las Vegas, Nevada, what I believe to be the T-Mobile Center, you will see “Wonderboy” get the worst ass whooping of his life.

“Hopefully all his fans and all his over entitlement will cease at that moment and we can do a eulogy for it.”

Fans eager to watch the first event of 2017’s roster will not have to wait long for the upcoming “UFC Fight Night 103: Rodriguez vs. Penn”. The event is scheduled to take place this Sunday in Phoenix, Arizona. You can watch the prelims and on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass, before the main card which will air on FS1.

UFC Hall Of Famer BJ Penn will make his return to the Octagon this weekend (Sunday, January 15, 2017) when he takes on No. 10-ranked featherweight Yair Rodriguez in the main event of UFC Phoenix.

Recently ‘The Prodigy’ spoke to FOX Sports to promote the bout, in which he was asked on his thoughts on today’s fighters attempting to campaign for ‘money fights’. Penn would go on to slam such fighters, and dared them to make themselves the money fight instead of asking for them:

“I’ll tell you this, I’m not the guy to go out there and say ‘oh give me this money fight, give me that money fight’,” Penn told FOX Sports. “I look at all these guys doing that and I’m like why don’t you go knock out a 100 guys and become the money fight yourself? “(Expletive) (expletive).

“Oh I want to fight this money fight, this money fight’ — why don’t you make yourself the money fight? How’s about that one? Let’s just start there. That’s the only way to do it,” Penn said.

Penn knows a thing or two about money fights, as he has competed against some of the biggest names in the sport (being one of them himself) such as Nick Diaz, Matt Hughes, and Georges St-Pierre. After almost three years of retirement Penn couldn’t resist the urge to return to fighting action again, and will step into the Octagon against Rodriguez who is currently on a seven-fight win streak.

Rodriguez and Penn will meet in the main event of UFC Fight Night 103 live on FS1, from the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona this Sunday night (January 15, 2017).

Coach: BJ Penn Remembered Who The F*ck He Is

Legendary former UFC lightweight and former UFC welterweight champion BJ “The Prodigy” Penn is set to make his return to action in the main event of this weekend’s (Jan. 15, 2016) UFC Fight Night 103 from Phoenix, Arizona. Penn last competed in 2014, and he’ll be facing a tough test this Saturday, as he’s set to take on rising prospect Yair Rodriguez.

Many have doubted Penn heading into his return bout given the fact that he hasn’t won a fight since 2010, but his longtime boxing coach Jason Parillo, who recently spoke on The Extra Rounds Podcast, said that Penn ‘remembered who the f*ck he is’ during this training camp:

“I think he’s made some gains and remembered who the f-ck he is,” Parillo said.
“I think he’s going to go out there and give this kid a shock.”

Penn last fought former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar in July 2014 and it unfortunately turned out to be of the worst performances of his illustrious career. Now at age 38, however, Penn has reunited with Parillo and has also trained under the tutelage of legendary trainers Greg Jackson and Mike Winklejohn in New Mexico.

Parillo feels as if the necessary changes have been made and he expects to see a different version of “The Prodigy” in this upcoming fight:

“He’s preparing maybe for a guy he saw fight Frankie Edgar fight last but I think BJ’s a different guy than he was.”

Do you expect Penn to return to form against Rodriguez?

Countdown To UFC Fight Night: Yair Rodriguez vs. BJ Penn

One of MMA’s fastest-rising prospects will look to score his biggest-ever win over one of its most storied champions ever when Yair Rodriguez meets BJ Penn in the main event of next Sunday’s January 15, 2017) UFC Fight Night 103 from Talking Stick Resort in Phoenix, Arizona.

Potentially a future featherweight title contender, “El Pantera” has stormed into the UFC with five wins in a row, the first winning him The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Latin America tournament championship. His flashy style and wild, yet well-rounded game comprise all the makings of a superstar, and a big name who may not be so dangerous anymore is the perfect launching pad for Rodriguez to further his scope.

After unceremoniously retiring in July 2014 after his third loss to Frankie Edgar, former lightweight and welterweight champion Penn has been attempting to return to fighting since January of 2016. He was scheduled to fight Dennis Siver at last April’s UFC 197, but an investigation into some serious criminal allegations put his return on hold until June’s UFC 199, where Penn couldn’t make the fight due to injury. “The Prodigy” then admitted to using an IV – something that’s now banned under USADA guidelines – and was subsequently suspended for six months.

When that punishment was over, Penn was then scheduled to face perennial top contender in the main of last October’s UFC Fight Night 97 from the Philippines. He pulled out due to injury again, and the entire card was ultimately canceled. Needless to say, it’s been a rocky path to a return for the man many felt was the best pound-for-pound MMA athlete for some time, and with five losses in his last six, he has his hands full with the dynamic striking of one of MMA’s most touted newcomers.

That makes for an intriguing future vs. past match-up that would boost the victor very significantly, although hardly in the same fashion. In preparation, watch the full Countdown to UFC Fight Night 103: Rodriguez vs. Penn here:

Yair Rodriguez ‘Never Asked For Fight’ With B.J. Penn

The main event of next Sunday night’s (Jan. 15) UFC Fight Night event in Phoenix will feature a featherweight clash between a prospect and a legend. Rising 145-pounder Yair Rodriguez will look to continue his surge when he meets Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Hall of Famer B.J. Penn.

When Rodriguez steps inside the Talking Stick Resort Arena to compete, he will be doing so against a former two-division champion. “El Pantera” spoke with MMAJunkie.com to discuss the importance of this bout:

“Fighting B.J. Penn is a pretty big deal. He’s already a two-time world champion in two different weight classes, so it makes it a pretty big deal for me, a pretty big test for my career. It’s a good opportunity to be tested by the UFC and see if they want to give me the title shot soon or not. I think this fight puts me in a good position for that title shot if I win.”

There’s a belief that the Mexican bruiser sought after a bout with Penn. Rodriguez denied ever asking to fight “The Prodigy.”

“B.J. is saying that I asked for this fight, and I never asked for this fight. I don’t know who told him that. The UFC just offered me the fight, and I said yes, so here we are, preparing ourselves to get in a war on Jan. 15. I don’t know who told B.J. that I was asking for the fight, but he is wrong.”

Regardless of whether Rodriguez asked or not, the fight will play out inside the Octagon. A win for Penn would be his first since Nov. 2010 when he knocked out Matt Hughes in 21 seconds. Penn has gone 0-3-1 since that time and is coming out of retirement.

Rodriguez has only suffered defeat once in nine bouts. In his eight victories, “El Pantera” has two knockouts and one submission. His last fight was a split decision win over Alex Caceres in a “Fight of the Night” performance.
