For the past several years, a rivalry seems to have brewed between the mixed martial arts (MMA) and boxing communities.

Things really sparked off following Conor McGregor and Floyd “Money” Mayweather’s bout in 2017. This fight also created the sub-rivalry of McGregor vs. Paulie Malignaggi. Malignaggi served as a sparring partner to McGregor prior to his fight with Mayweather.

However, once McGregor leaked photos from their sessions, including one video in particular in which it looked like the former boxing world champion was knocked down, Malignaggi left the camp. For the past several years Malignaggi has held a grudge over the incident. So much so that he has found his way into a bare-knuckle boxing match against McGregor’s close friend and training partner Artem Lobov.

The pair headline BKFC 6 on June 22. Recently speaking to Fight Hype, Malignaggi had some harsh comments for the MMA community, who he feels has disrespected the sport of boxing as of late. While some claim MMA is more dangerous than boxing, Malignaggi defends by saying his sport has a much higher number of deaths in its history (via BJPenn.com):

“Lobov and the mixed martial arts community have really disrespected my sport in a lot of ways; boxing, saying that we fight with pads on and it’s not a real fighting sport and what not, but we have all the deaths,” Malignaggi said.

“We have more of the deaths by a long shot. We have more of the permanent damage by a long shot. This is not to diminish the danger of mixed martial arts or any other combat sport, but there is a reason why boxing has more deaths and more traumatic brain injuries in one night because we are the most dangerous combat sport.

This prompted a response from former UFC welterweight title challenger, and now commentator, Dan Hardy. While speaking on a Sirius XM broadcast, Hardy said he’s disappointed Malignagi lumped all MMA fans into one category:

“It disappoints me that he is grouping all MMA fans together,” Hardy said. “We are not all grouped together, we are not poking fun at boxing because they wear pads, we do respect it and it’s often been boxing that has drawn the ‘us vs you’ argument because of the rise of MMA.”

Hardy also found Malignaggi’s comments about boxing having the most deaths to be in poor taste. Instead, the Englishman believes we should focus on analyzing those deaths and attempting to prevent them as much as possible.

He also explained why Malignaggi’s experience in bare-knuckle boxing will be much different from his years fighting with padded gloves:

“To claim the deaths in boxing is ridiculous, to say we’re [boxing] the toughest sport because we have the most deaths is silly,” Hardy said. “Maybe what we should do is analyze why there are deaths in boxing and see if we can fix it, and part of the problem maybe is [that] they are wearing padded hands.

“Now Paulie is going to get a very different look when he’s bare-knuckle boxing cause he’s going to break both his hands on Artem Lobov’s head. He’s got soft hands and no punching power as it is… He’s also set the bar very high now because if he goes into this fight against Artem, he breaks both his hands and he can’t continue to fight what’s he going to do, tough guy it through?

“What we’re interested in is the most efficient and effective style of fighting. It’s not a comparison with boxing, it never has been. I appreciate the art of boxing, but it is a small element of the whole of combat sports and it has been so refined that it is not really very realistic in real combat.”

MMA fighter-turned-bare knuckle boxer Artem Lobov is sick of the trash talking and ready to punch Paulie Malignaggi in the face.

The two will meet in the main event of the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship’s (BKFC) sixth event on June 22 at the Whittemore Center at UNH in Durham, New Hampshire.

“The Russian Hammer” is already back despite his bloody BKFC debut. As if his epic war with Jason Knight wasn’t enough, Lobov was right back to training just five days after the brutal affair.

“At this stage, I’m just sick of this whole thing, I just want to get him in there,” Lobov said, speaking to The Delve (via themaclife). “I don’t believe my luck, to be honest, that he’s doing this. I didn’t think this would ever happen, but he must be really stuck for money, and I’ve heard he is. That’s the only reason he’s doing this.”

Lobov believes that Malignaggi’s ultimate goal is a fight with Conor McGregor. However, “The Russian Hammer” doesn’t think the pugilist has thought this through.

“Of course if Conor was to throw him that bone and offer him that fight, he’d take it in a heartbeat,” Lobov said. “That’s hundreds of millions for what? For nothing. He takes an ass whooping and he’s set for life, so of course he would have taken it. He tried to make it happen, he then realized it’s not happening. He still needs the money though, so he had to settle for whatever he could get, the next best thing which was me.”

“And at the time when he took it, he probably thought, ‘Okay, I got my arse whooped by Conor, but Artem, he’s not on the level of Conor so I will take him and it won’t be an issue’. Then he probably watched the last fight [Lobov vs. Knight] and is scratching his head and going, f*ck, should have just stuck to eyebrow plucking.”

Lobov also thinks that his well-rounded skill set as a mixed martial artist is going to be a massive advantage heading into his second bare knuckle bout. As for his opponent, the fan favorite claims Malignaggi is very out of shape and in trouble as a result.

“It’s only nine or eight weeks now until the fight,” Lobov said. “He needs to learn the trade of the clinch. He needs to learn the different pace. He needs to get in shape because he just came off the couch. Big fat pudding. I’ve seen him. Who is going to coach him now? He needs f*ck*ng weight watchers to coach him. That’s who he needs to coach because he’s just a fat guy off the couch. He asked for the fight to be at 154-pounds when he used to fight at 140. What does that tell you? Lazy and fat. Can’t make the weight. Doesn’t want to make the weight. Doesn’t want to stop eating the pizza. Doesn’t want to put the box of donuts down.”

“I find it hard to even worry about this fight. What is he going to do? Even in Conor’s spar, for example, they did the twelve rounds but the only reason he somehow made it to the twelve round’s end because he did nothing. He was very, very passive. He never let the right hand go, he threw a couple of jabs and covering up the whole time. The headgear and the big gloves, of course, that saved him.”

“So what’s he going to do? Honestly, I’m just thinking back to that spar where I got to witness him live, watched a bunch of his fights now, what’s he going to do to me?”

Fresh off his 25-second knock out at BKFC 5, Chris Leben will be back in the squared circle to take on another former Bellator MMA veteran in Brennan Ward.

“The Crippler” showed out in his promotional debut last weekend at BKFC 5 in Biloxi, Mississippi.

So much so that Leben already has another fight confirmed with the organization for their next event in June. He confirmed the news on MMAJunkieRadio on SiriusXM.

While Leben is fresh of his second bare knuckle knockout win in as many contests, Ward hasn’t competed since losing to Fernando Gonzalez at Bellator 182 in August of 2017. However, he does hold a victory over Curtis Millender, who fights on this weekend’s UFC 236 card, in a 2015 Bellator bout.
