Ryan Clark slams 'Boring' Aljamain Sterling after Daniel Cormier proposes next BMF title fight

Aljamain Sterling may have gotten the job done, but he left a lot to be desired in his featherweight debut.

After surrendering the bantamweight belt to ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley last summer, the ‘Funk Master’ made the move to 145 in search of a new division to conquer. He got off to a good start at UFC 300, scoring a decisive decision victory over top 10 ranked contender Calvin Kattar.

Though fight fans were less than thrilled with Sterling’s grapple-heavy approach, former two-division UFC champion Daniel Cormier believes his dominant performance made the ‘Funk Master’ a legitimate candidate to challenge for the BMF title — now held by featherweight cornerstone Max Holloway following his buzzer-beating knockout of Justin Gaethje at the landmark event.

“Put ‘Aljo’ in the BMF title fight, yes,” Cormier said on Good Guy/Bad Guy. “If anybody is a BMF, they can do what ‘Aljo’ did at UFC 300. You go up a weight class, you dominate somebody in the grappling like that, that’s a BMF, Ryan. Put ‘Aljo’ in the next title fight.”

Ryan Clark Sounds off on Aljamain Sterling

During the episode, Cormier reunited with his DC & RC co-host, former Pittsburgh Steeler and Super Bowl champion Ryan Clark, who was not afraid to disagree with the UFC Hall of Famer’s BMF title suggestion.

“It is, DC. It’s a ‘boring motherf*cker. That’s what that is,” Clark responded. “That’s what the BMF would stand for if Aljamain Sterling was the new BMF champion.

“I love him. He has to win. You gotta go out and win, that’s why it’s called mixed martial arts. Chael [Sonnen] landed strikes against Anderson Silva and rocked him then Chael took it to the ground and dominated him on the ground. I have no problem with that. Chael is absolutely a BMF. If it is two names that are that big, I am okay with the fight going that way. Just don’t put the belt up. Put the real belt up for that fight. Do not put the BMF up for it” (h/t MMA Mania).

Max Holloway mocks Ilia Topuria's demands for potential title fight: 'That’s kind of un-BMF'

Max Holloway doesn’t think Ilia Topuria is acting like a true BMF.

Following Holloway’s incredible buzzer-beating knockout of Justin Gaethje to win the UFC’s bragging rights belt on April 13, reigning featherweight champion Ilia Topuria opened the door for a potential clash between the two titleholders if — and only if — ‘Blessed’ puts his BMF title up for grabs

“Without the BMF belt [on the line], I don’t want him at all,” Topuria said on The MMA Hour. “If not, I’m gonna fight with Volk who deserves more than him, the rematch. Because he has that belt, I’m excited about that. That’s why I want him. He’s been saying, ‘Right now I have a lot of options.’ He doesn’t have any options. I’m the champion right now, I choose the date, I choose the place. He just has to be ready and wait for the call. Whenever I want him, he has to be ready.”

Responding to Topuria’s demand, Max Holloway questioned whether or not ‘El Matador’ was exhibiting the characteristics of a true BMF.

“That’s not a very ‘BMF’ way to say it,” Holloway told Jim Rome. “A ‘BMF’ wouldn’t say, ‘I’m not going to fight this guy unless …’ That’s kind of un-‘BMF.’ Doesn’t sound ‘BMF’ the way he’s trying to demand it and saying, ‘I’m not going to fight.’

“A ‘BMF’ fights whatever, fights whoever, whenever, any weight, any time, and that’s not a tone of a ‘BMF.’”

Staying true to the BMF way, Max Holloway is adamant that he’ll fight any man the UFC chooses to put in front of him, but a world title tussle with Ilia Topuria is at the top of his last.

Ilia Topuria open to a rematch with Alexander Volkanovski if Max Holloway Fight doesn’t happen

Topuria, on the other hand, did open the door to a potential rematch with Alexander Volkanovski, the man he took the featherweight strap from at UFC 298 in February.

However, ‘El Matador’ has a great deal of respect for the former champ and wants ‘The Great’ to take plenty of time to rest and recover after suffering a pair of brutal back-to-back knockouts.

“Alexander Volkanovki’s been the world champ,” Topuria said. “He’s defended it six or seven times. He’s a pound-for-pound fighter. The most technical guy I’ve fought ever. There’s a reason he’s been a world champion, but I think he needs more time to recover. He fought at the end of the year and got knocked out [by Islam Makhachev].

“I knocked him out and if he doesn’t get the time to recover, he’ll get knocked out three times in one year, or something like that. I just want the best for him. I want the best version of Volkanovski.”

UFC 300's Justin Gaethje snaps back at 'Fat' Jorge Masivdal over BMF title dig: 'He is so irrelevant'

Justin Gaethje has no interest in listening to anything Jorge Masvidal has to say — particularly when it comes to the BMF title.

On Saturday night (April 13), Gaethje will return to the Octagon as part of a loaded UFC 300 card in Las Vegas. There, the UFC’s baddest motherf*cker will put his bragging rights belt on the line against Dana White’s all-time favorite featherweight, Max Holloway.

Justin Gaethje vs. Max Holloway at UFC 300

Upon hearing news of the clash between Gaethje and Holloway, Masvidal — the promotion’s first-ever BMF titleholder — suggested that the UFC book a unification match of sorts between himself and Gaethje. When ‘The Highlight’ promptly shot down the idea, ‘Gamebred’ snapped back, threatening to break the lightweight’s orbital.

“If you put BMF against BMF, if you put me against Gaethje in there, I would break his f*cking eye orbital, and I would f*cking chop him up,” Masvidal said in an exclusive interview with LowKick MMA.

Justin Gaethje slams Jorge Masvidal in scathing response

Earlier this week, UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier caught up with Gaethje ahead of his BMF title tilt with Holloway. Asked about Masvidal’s comments, ‘The Highlight’ didn’t hold anything back in his response.

“The only orbital he got broken is his against Kamaru [Usman] and I loved to see it,” Gaethje said. “He f*cking cheap-shotted Colby Covington and didn’t break his orbital.”

“Nothing was more special than seeing all that mist come off his face when f*cking Kamaru put a hole through it,” he added.

He’s fat as f*ck. I fight at 155 pounds, so he can f*ck off.”

Masvidal won the BMF belt at UFC 244, defeating Nate Diaz via a doctor’s stoppage TKO following the third round. ‘Gamebred’ would go on to lose his next four fights before exiting the promotion to pursue a career in boxing.

On Saturday, June 1, Masvidal will run it back with Diaz inside the squared circle at a pay-per-view event in Inglewood, Cali.

Michael Chandler shoots his shot, calls for Islam Makhachev, and a BMF title fight post-Conor McGregor

Doing a little Q&A on social media, ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler offered up two potential fights that could follow up his long-awaited clash with Irish megastar Conor McGregor.

Chandler and McGregor have been linked together for well over a year. By all accounts, we appear to be closing in on an official announcement as both fighters have remained adamant that they will step inside the Octagon on June 29 for the culmination of this year’s International Fight Week in Las Vegas.

Whether or not that proves true remains to be seen.

Still, that isn’t stopping Michael Chandler from making plans for life after Conor McGregor. Fielding questions on X, one fan asked the former Bellator MMA champion who he would like to fight once ‘Mystic Mac’ is in the rearview. Chandler offered two explosion options, writing.

“Islam or BMF,” wrote in response.

If Michael Chandler wants a shot at UFC gold or the BMF belt, he’ll likely have to get in line

Islam, of course, refers to reigning UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. If Chandler’s top priority is another shot at the 155-pound crown, he’ll likely have to get in line as the promotion has a backlog of viable contenders — chief among them being Justin Gaethje, who just happens to hold the BMF title.

Justin Gaethje with the BMF belt

Gaethje will put his bragging rights belt on the line at UFC 300 on April 13 against former featherweight champ Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway. If ‘The Highlight’ wins, he will almost certainly be next in line for a shot at the ‘Dagestani Destroyer’ later this year.

Also going down on April 13 is a lightweight title eliminator pitting Charles Oliveira against Arman Tsarukyan, presenting yet another potential contender for Makhachev to deal with ahead of Chandler.

Oliveira vs. Tsarukyan at UFC 300

If Michael Chandler wants a crack at the BMF belt, the best-case scenario would see Holloway’s hand raised at UFC 300, which could set the stage for a fight between two of the UFC’s most explosive strikers.

Of course, none of this matters if Chandler can’t get past Conor McGregor first.
