Joe Rogan was among several notable names to react to the shocking upset that Anthony Joshua suffered in his latest fight.

Joshua took on Andy Ruiz Jr. in the main event of the show that took place on Saturday night (June 1, 2019) at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Joshua’s WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles were on the line.

The event aired exclusively live on DAZN in the United States and on Sky Sports Box Office in the United Kingdom. Ruiz wasn’t even Joshua’s original opponent, as he was supposed to fight undefeated challenger Jarrell Miller, but was then replaced by Ruiz Jr. after three failed drug tests.

In the fight, Ruiz Jr. won the bout by technical knockout in the 7th round. As a result, it marked Joshua’s first loss in his career, which, coincidentally, was his first fight to take place in the United States.

Longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan took to his official Instagram account to give his reaction to the devastating loss, writing the following:

“Nights like this are one of the many reasons why I love fights. Weird shit happens when people punch each other in the head. Most of the time when people ask me “who is going to win?” I say, “I don’t know. That’s why we have to see them fight.”

I say that because I’m being honest. There are windows in time where you’re convinced you know the outcome. Where a king has lain waste to all who challenge his dominance, and you’re SURE he’s going to win a fight.

Then, someone like @andy_destroyer13 comes along and flips the whole thing right on its fucking head and shocks the world. I LOVE s**t like that. Congrats to @andy_destroyer13 on an amazing victory.”

Former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua took his shock defeat on the chin and plans on coming back stronger.

Joshua was a heavy favorite going into his Madison Square Garden headliner against short-notice opponent Andy Ruiz Jr. on Saturday night.

However, he would get knocked down four times over seven rounds until the referee called an end to the fight as Ruiz became the first-ever Mexican heavyweight champion.

Despite what was a huge setback, “AJ” looked at things with a positive outlook backstage.

“All good, bro,” Joshua told iFL TV when asked how he was feeling. “Easy thing to say. Didn’t want to take the loss tonight. Boxing is about not getting hit. I got hit one too many times. Ruiz, the better man, got the win and I’ve got to take this loss like a man.

“Still looking forward, still got my eyes set on bigger things. I’ve got to make a major comeback. So we’ll see what happens next. Who I fight next. I’ve still got my eyes on the bigger picture but getting my hands on those belts always put me in a position of power so I want to get my hands back in those and still proceed with the goal I have.”

Joshua Focused On Improving Rather Than Rematch

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn later confirmed they will trigger the Briton’s clause for a rematch to take place in the United Kingdom in November or December this year. However, Joshua is more focused on improving and fixing where he went wrong.

“Yeah, we can get a rematch on straight away,” he added. “But there’s more to it, I need to focus on immediately getting myself together, fixing where I went wrong, and whoever I take on, show where we sharpened up our tools.”

Many legendary champions have come back looking even better after their first defeat. So while this is a major setback for Joshua, it’s certainly not the end of his legacy.

The combat sports world is buzzing over last night’s (Sat. June 1, 2019) boxing heavyweight title bout upset.

Andy Ruiz Jr. shocked the world when he became the first man to defeat Anthony Joshua inside the ring. The Mexican-American champ downed Joshua in the seventh round via TKO. Even former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor reacted to the fight.

On Twitter, McGregor drew parallels between Ruiz’s Mexican spirit, and that of “Notorious’” former Octagon foe, Nate Diaz. Here’s what he had to say:

“Boxing is great, I am going to relish another go! I challenge Juan Manuel Mayweather to a rematch. Under the tutelage of my old club. We’ll see then mate.”

“I know first hand the toughness of the Mexican chin. They come up off the floor like something out of thriller. It is never over until it’s over with the Mexicans. God bless them. Congrats Andy Ruiz.”

Ruiz Jr. handed Joshua the first defeat of his professional boxing career. Of course, this now shakes up the heavyweight division and the desired super fights between the likes of Joshua, Deontay Wilder, and Tyson Fury. Fury and Wilder also offered their thoughts on the Joshua loss shortly after the event.

Earlier tonight (Sat. June 1, 2019) Andy Ruiz Jr. shocked the boxing world in New York.

The Mexican-American knockout artist handed Anthony Joshua his first career loss, taking the unified heavyweight title home in the process. This throws a huge wrench into Joshua’s plans to face the likes of Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury in the future. Both Wilder and Fury have offered their reactions to the upset.

Fury actually sent out a heartfelt message to his fellow countryman, offering him some words of advise:

“We have our back and Forth’s but @anthonyfjoshua changed his stars through life. heavyweight boxing, these things happen, rest up, recover, regroup and come again”

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder’s response, however, was much different. Wilder claimed Joshua never was a “true champion,” saying his career was built off lies and contradictions:

“He wasn’t a true champion. His whole career was consisted of lies, contradictions and gifts. Facts and now we know who was running from who!!!!”

Now, Joshua will most likely move on to rematch Ruiz later this year. Should the Englishman avenge his defeat and regain the titles, perhaps a fight against Wilder or Fury will still be on the table. Of course, it’ll be nowhere near as big as it could’ve been when Joshua was undefeated.

However, Ruiz Jr. is the champion and proved tonight he shouldn’t be overlooked. The heavyweight division moving forward will be very interesting to keep an eye on, indeed.
