If presented with the opportunity, UFC featherweight contender Cub Swanson would be “100 percent” open to competing under Zuffa Boxing.

When Swanson’s UFC contract expired following his loss to Brian Ortega in December 2017, he was pondering entering the boxing world.

So much so that he even went to UFC president Dana White with the idea and had an opponent in mind as well.

“100%, if I was given the opportunity,” Swanson told MMA Junkie radio (via MMA News). “When I was a free agent, it was something that I talked to Dana about, I brought up.

“I told him, ‘hey, you know, I’d be open to fight…you see [Jose] Aldo training boxing. He wants to box. I’d be open to box him.’ And he just told me, ‘that’s funny, I’d rather just watch you guys fight MMA.’ And I was like, ‘well, I’d love to do that, too, but I think a lot of people would be interested in that.’”

Boxing In The Future?

In the end, Swanson signed a new UFC deal.

However, he doesn’t completely rule out a boxing match in the future, especially with White planning his moves soon.

“But I almost switched to boxing a couple times just because I really enjoy it,” Swanson continued. “As a mixed martial artist, you want to try all the different disciplines.

“The main reason I didn’t is because I knew I’d have to kind of start over. And if I was in an opportunity to do something like Conor [McGregor] did…if I was gonna make more money doing my first boxing match, then I’d be like, let’s do it…and especially under Dana White’s boxing series. I’d love to help show that MMA guys can box, too. So it’s something that would be fun.”

But first, Swanson will have to focus on his UFC Ottawa opponent this weekend as he takes on rising contender Shane Burgos.

WBC heavyweight boxing champion Deontay Wilder will return to the ring in May.

However, he won’t be taking on a household name. Instead, he’ll be facing mandatory challenger Dominic Breazeale. Many fans would’ve preferred to have seen Wilder rematch Tyson Fury, or even finally challenge heavyweight king Anthony Joshua. In regards to Joshua, Wilder co-manager Shelly Finkel told Tha Boxing Voice such a match-up will have to wait.

Wilder’s plate is full at the moment. If Joshua wants to fight “The Bronze Bomber,” it’ll have to wait until 2020 (via Boxing Scene):

“He’s fighting his mandatory now, then we have a pretty full slate for this year, then we will discuss fighting Joshua next year. The name calling, the immaturities that are in the press, they won’t help but won’t hinder making the fight,” Finkel said.

“They are all in the works. There is nothing confirmed at this point, the only thing that is locked in is the fight with Breazeale on May 18. If everything goes the way we hope it will, we will then discuss his next fight. I have spoken with [DAZN top executive] John Skipper more than once.

“Him and I are developing a very good relationship, I’m very fond of him. Those talks will continue, and eventually it will lead to a fight of Deontay and Joshua.”

Joshua is also occupied for the time being. He’ll be defending his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles against Andy Ruiz from Madison Square Garden. The fight goes down on June 1 and will be Joshua’s United States debut.

Initially, Joshua was scheduled to face Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller. However, a failed drug test from Miller led to an opponent change.

Jarrell Miller has been suspended for six months by the World Boxing Association (WBA) following his failed drug tests this month.

Miller was set for the biggest payday of his career when he was to challenge heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua on June 1 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

However, he would go on to fail three drug tests for banned substances including GW1516, human growth hormone (HGH) and Erythropoietin (EPO). After first claiming innocence, “Big Baby” later admitted his guilt on social media.

Having been unlicensed by the New York State Athletic Commission following the first failed test, Miller will now be withdrawn from the WBA’s rankings until September 19 as part of this suspension.

In order to return to the rankings, the American will also have to do register with the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) and undergo random testing at his own expense.

According to his co-promoter Greg Cohen, he won’t be able to compete in any jurisdiction during his suspension either.

“It’s appropriate, and we just look forward to moving on to bigger and better things in the future,” Miller’s co-promoter Greg Cohen told ESPN. “I don’t think he has a choice. Certainly by way of this resolution, he’s required to, and I’m sure Jarrell will be compliant with the resolution.”

Anthony Joshua’s New Opponent

Joshua took multiple jabs at Miller following the news and was well within his right to do so. However, he and his team also had to work on getting a short-notice replacement for Miller.

That opponent now seems to be California-born Andy Ruiz Jr. who last competed earlier this month with a win over Alexander Dimitrenko.

Ruiz Jr.’s only loss came during a world title fight when he lost to Joseph Parker for the vacant WBO heavyweight title back in 2016.

UFC President Dana White has teased a venture into boxing for quite some time.

The polarizing face of MMA recently claimed he would announce his plans for the long-rumored Zuffa Boxing after the summer. However, his latest tweet may suggest the wheels are well in motion.

White posted a photo alongside infamous boxing promoter Eddie Hearn with only the short caption, ‘Uh Oh!!!!!!!!’ this evening. Take a look:

Hearn’s most famous client is heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. He manages a stable of high-profile boxers for Matchroom Sports.

Joshua was scheduled to face Jarrell Miller on June 1, but a trio of failed drug tests from ‘Big Baby’ has left the British superstar without an opponent. Joshua has teased fighting heavyweight MMA fighters like Stipe Miocic. The former UFC champion also expressed interest in facing Joshua under boxing rules.

Could White’s appearance with Hearn mean that a huge boxing collaboration is coming soon?
