Rising Middleweight Calls Out ‘Cheating’ Yoel Romero: F**k That

One of the UFC’s fastest-rising stars thinks Yoel Romero is trying to cheat the system in a way.

One of the UFC middleweight division’s fastest-rising future stars isn’t fond of top-ranked veteran Yoel Romero.

Set to meet Brad Tavares in the main event of Friday night’s (July 6, 2018) The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 27 Finale from the Pearl Theatre in Paradise, Nevada, touted Israel Adesanya spoke out against “The Soldier of God’s” recent failure to make weight to MMA Fighting, something that happened prior to his UFC 221 knockout of Luke Rockhold and his five-round war with Robert Whittaker at June 9’s UFC 225.

“The Last Stylebender” doesn’t agree with how Romero has repeatedly missed, and although it didn’t matter at UFC 225 because the fight ended up being amazing, it is a form of cheating the system according to Adesanya:

“Look at Romero in his last fight. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t really care in the end because it was such a good fight, but regardless of what happened I didn’t want Romero to win,” he said.

“F*ck that, the guy missed weight and it’s not even the first time he missed weight. And he’s been caught doing other stuff in the past too. I think there’s an element of gaming the system there, it’s almost cheating to be honest.”

Adesanya made his long-awaited UFC debut at March’s UFC 221 in Perth, Australia, so he witnessed Romero’s first weight miss of 2018 first hand. He claimed some sort of conspiracy theory was shrouding Romero’s weight cut at the event:

“I was there in Perth and I still don’t fully understand what happened, it’s a bit of a conspiracy theory. I can remember I saw him going into the sauna that time, but they were cleaning the sauna so he wasn’t able to go in to cut more weight.”

In his opinion, the conspiracy was that Romero gave up on cutting the final three pounds, instead choosing to not deplete himself while giving up part of his purse to earn a title shot versus Whittaker:

“Regardless of all that, the conspiracy theory is that Yoel Romero didn’t try to lose weight again after he weighed in the first time in Perth. Why would he deplete himself more by trying to lose that further three pounds? I think he just thought, ‘F*ck that, I’m going to win this fight. He can take my purse, but at the end of the day, I know I’m fighting for the world title.’”

Adesanya will face by far the biggest test of his UFC career when he meets Tavares this weekend. With a win, he should steamroll onto the Top 10 of the official rankings by defeating the No. 8 fighter, and the sky will be the limit for the undefeated kickboxing wiz.

From the looks of it, he’d like to get a shot at Romero soon thereafter.

Brad Tavares has discussed the rumors of him pulling out of his fight at the TUF 27 Finale.

Back in June, it was rumored that Tavares suffered a broken foot in training that forced him out of his scheduled middleweight bout against Israel Adesanya in the main event of TUF 27 Finale.

Despite the comments made by UFC President Dana White about looking for a replacement for Tavares, this fight is a go and will be carried out as originally planned.

In a recent interview, Tavares went on record by stating that the rumors of him out of this fight came about once an old injury flare up during training camp but he was just receiving treatment like he’s done previously while preparing for his fights.

“So I had an old injury that basically got taken as a new, current injury,” Tavares explained to MMANytt. “A lot of misinformation and miscommunication because the UFC medical personnel that relayed this message to Dana [White] had never even spoken to me, had never ever spoke to their own UFC [physical therapy] staff who I had been working with at the UFC [Performance Institute]. Just a lot of miscommunication, misinformation and it blew up.”

“After it all happened, I posted a video of me working out doing heavy squats, jumping, stuff that you wouldn’t be able to do,” Tavares said. “It was an injury that I had a while ago and like I said they misconstrued it and it blew up but I’m fine. I’m ready to rock and roll.”

TUF 27 Finale (Also known as The Ultimate Fighter Finale) is set to take place on Friday, July 6, 2018, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The main card will air on FOX Sports 1 at while the preliminary card will be split broadcasted on FOX Sports 1 at and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

“That’s exactly my thoughts and that’s what I was saying — I don’t think that I’ve ever gone into a fight without any kind of injury,” Tavares said with a laugh. “That being said, there are injuries that are a lot more serious and there are fight preventing injuries.
“I feel like if I ever approached a fight and everything was perfect, like nothing [wrong], I would almost feel a little weird.”

Israel Adesanya Reacts To Rumors About First UFC Headliner

Adesanya really needs this test.

When rumors emerged that Brad Tavares would be forced off his scheduled meeting against Israel Adesanya at The Ultimate Fighter Season 27 Finale (TUF 27 Finale), “The Last Stylebender” had different information coming at him for all sorts of directions.

Adesanya said that he received a call from his father after seeing a video of UFC President Dana White saying Tavares might not be able to compete. Adesanya told MMA Fighting that after contacting his coach, Eugene Bareman, he was told not to worry about it:

“I have no idea what was going on there,” Adesanya said. “Out of nowhere I got word from my Dad saying, ‘What happened to the fight? I heard your opponent broke his foot?’ I hadn’t heard anything about it and I still haven’t.

“I text Eugene and he told me to ignore it and that Mick Maynard had said it was nothing. Then my Dad sent me on a link, it was a video of Dana White talking about Tavares breaking his foot. Again, I was told to ignore it.”

Tavares has recently commented on the matter, claiming the fight is “100 percent on.” Regardless if it’s Tavares or someone else standing across from him inside the cage, Adesanya couldn’t seem to care less:

“My heart didn’t skip a beat. As far as I’m concerned, I’m fighting and if he’s injured, I’ll fight someone else. I always have a feeling that things like this are going to happen when I sign for a fight, but I didn’t lose any sleep over it. I was training that day like normal.”

While Adesanya feels that it might be true that Tavares suffered an injury in training camp, someone from the Hawaiian’s camp may have jumped the gun in detailing the severity of the situation:

“Where there’s smoke there’s fire, so maybe there was something. Maybe Dana White or someone else jumped the gun.

“Regardless of whether he’s picked up an injury or not, it’s not going to change anything. All I know is I’m fighting and my flights are booked. Nothing is going to ruin this for me.”
