A video has emerged appearing to show Rogerio Bontorin tapping out to a Brandon Royval armbar in last night’s flyweight action.

The bout was expected to be a fun one and certainly did not disappoint. The two 125 pound contenders went back and forth for the first 10 minutes before controversy ensued late in the fight.

With the scorecards seeming to be locked up at one round apiece, Royval locked in a tight armbar in the third round. Bontorin appeared to submit, but it went unnoticed by referee Mark Smith and the fighters battled to a judge’s decision.

The UFC broadcast team seem to have noticed as Bontorin tapped out but the fight continued on

It ultimately proved to be irrelevant as Royval won via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28) but plenty from around the fight world chimed in on Twitter after noticing the tap on television.

Now What For Brandon Royval?

What do you think is next for Royval after this win?

With a win over Kai Kara-France and a hard fought battle with the current champion Brandon Moreno, Royval has proven to be able to hang with the elites at 125. Is he one win away from a title shot?

How about Bontorin? This marks three losses in his last four and he should expect to drop down from his current #7 spot in the rankings.

Did you think Brandon Royval should’ve got the submission win at UFC Vegas 46?

UFC flyweight contender, Brandon Royval has snapped his two-fight losing run, courtesy of a close split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-29) victory over Rogerio Bontorin on the main card of UFC Vegas 46.

Improving to 13-6 as a professional, Royval snaps a period of two consecutive stoppages losses to first, current division titleholder, Brandon Moreno, and then a submission loss to Alexandre Pantoja.

Forced the distance for the first time in his Octagon tenure, the #5 ranked flyweight contender almost forced the issue in the third round, going close with an armbar attempt from the bottom, with Bontorin defending stoutly, albeit in some considerable danger.

With the win, Royval now holds three under the promotion’s banner — following prior stoppages over Kai Kara-France, and one-time undisputed title chaser, Tim Elliott.

Pantoja

Likely earning his first shot at UFC flyweight gold, Alexandre ‘The Cannibal’ Pantoja is also primed for a title rematch against recently minted titleholder, Brandon Moreno — via an impressive second round rear-naked choke over the pressing, Brandon Royval to kick off the main card of UFC Vegas 34.

Opening up the main card portion of UFC Vegas 34 tonight, Pantoja and Royval got off to a frenetic pace early, with the Brazilian immediately engaging with clinch work and grappling exchanges, taking the latter’s back for the majority of the opening round.

Attempting to granby roll on cue, Royval almost set up his own heel hook attempt during a scramble, before he was clipped with what appeared to be a well-placed right hand during latter striking exchanges before the close of the first round.

Again taking Royval’s back in the opening minute of the second round, Rio de Janeiro native, Pantoja patiently locked his hands around Royval’s chin, forcing an eventual tap in the process — as he looks to meet with defending champion, Moreno following an initial clash on The Ultimate Fighter before a UFC Fight Night Santiago matchup back in May 2019. In both pairings, Pantoja emerged victorious.

Below, catch Pantoja’s submission stoppage over Royval.

Brandon Royval has high expectations for the upcoming flyweight title fight between Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Brandon Moreno which will take place at UFC 263 on June 12.

Figueiredo and Moreno put on an exciting, Fight of the Year candidate when they squared off at UFC 256 in December.

The pair threw down for five rounds at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas before the judges scored the fight a majority draw and Figueiredo retained his 125lb strap.

Royval expects more of the same when Figueiredo and Moreno rematch next month.

“That’s gonna be the greatest fight ever. I’m sure they’re going to deliver the same exact way as they did the first time,” Royval told LowKickMMA. “I don’t know who’s going to win that. I really think it’s like a point to ask between the two, but I’m excited to watch it. I want to see the adjustments they both made from the first fight. I love it. I learned a lot from watching it too. They’re not going to finish each other or they might, but it’s going to be hard for both of them.”

‘Raw Dawg’ hopes to be challenging the winner of the UFC 263 flyweight title fight in the near future but first he must get back into the win column when he fights Alexandre Pantoja on August 21.

“My goal is a hundred percent getting the title in the future,” Royval said. “Getting a shot and setting myself up for that next point. I don’t know how the division looks after Cody Garbrandt comes back and all that. But I know for me, it’s just chasing that dream and getting that number one spot as quick as possible would be my goal. On top of that, I want to go put on performances. I’m new to the division and I don’t have any fans. I want to show I’m the real deal.”

UFC flyweight contender Brandon Royval has big plans for 2021, and that begins with his recently-announced fight with third-ranked contender Alexandre Pantoja at a UFC Fight Night on August 21st.

After a few months away from the sport due to his recovery from surgery on a torn labrum he suffered in his last fight against Brandon Moreno at UFC 255, Royval is re-motivated and re-energized, and ready to challenge the best fighters in the UFC’s resurrected flyweight division.

Royval recently sat down to speak with LowKickMMA and brought some insight into what his recovery from his second shoulder surgery has been like.

“It’s been a roller coaster and it’s been a great ride in a million different ways,” Royval said. “I’m a huge Jabber and being a southpaw, my right hand is my money. So it was almost a weird blessing in disguise where it’s like, I can brush up on a bunch of different other things and be a student of the game that way. And more importantly, brush up my mind.”

Royval has the opportunity to seek revenge on the flyweights after suffering his first loss in the UFC. The former LFA flyweight champion had won his first two UFC bouts against Kai Kara-France and Tim Elliott before the TKO loss to Moreno.

UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo and Moreno are scheduled to fight in a re-match at UFC 263. Figueiredo and Moreno fought to a majority draw in their first bout at UFC 256.

The winner between Royval and Pantoja has the opportunity to be next in line for the title, and in the worse case fight second-ranked contender Askar Askarov later this year.

Another development in Royval’s life has been quitting his full-time job as a youth services specialist in Colorado’s juvenile justice system. Royval worked with juveniles for a living before his win over Kara-France, leaving the position to focus on full-time fighting shortly after.

While he’s left his previous career path, he still works with kids in the Denver metropolitan area including his gym Factory X’s Dream Center program. The purpose of the program is to engage with troubled local youth and encourage them to begin a better path in life away from crime and other gang activities.

First thing’s first for Royval, as he begins preparation to compete against a very tough Pantoja on another big stage. Despite the layoff due to injury, he’s ready to leave a legacy as one of the best flyweights in the world.

“I get to go back in there against the number three guy in the world, Royval said. “I didn’t get to lose too much stock in myself. I’m pretty stoked that I have an exciting opportunity to kind of keep moving up and going up the rankings.”

Do you think Brandon Royval has what it takes to become UFC flyweight champion?
