Massive brawl at UFC Mexico

Fans inside Arena CDMX for the UFC’s return to Mexico weren’t content with just watching some fights go down.

Just before the decision was read for Saturday’s main card opener between Manuel Torres and Chris Duncan was announced, a massive melee broke out among fans in the stands. One particularly hefty individual who was involved in the skirmish impressively dispatched two of the other brawlers with a stiff left hand, sending one of them tumbling backward down the arena stairs.

With the crowd clearly distracted, Torres attempted to de-escalate the situation on the microphone following his first-round submission win via rear-naked choke.

It is uncertain what led to the scuffle, but with the arena pretty much packed full by the time the second preliminary bout started, an unhealthy amount of testosterone mixed with a few too many cervezas likely played a role.

Perhaps even more shocking was the complete absence of security as no less than 10 people decided to put on their own version of Street Beefs in the middle of a UFC event.

MMA Press Conference

In what seems to be becoming a familiar theme a Russian MMA press conference crumbled into chaos when two fighters began going at each other live in the studio.

In the video which has gone viral, a man can be seen attacking another fighter after tempers flared on stage. One of the men initially begins to walk over towards another one of the men sitting down on the stage.

Before you know it the man walking over swung at the man sitting down as a fight began to break out. Security was quick onto it and got onto the stage to stop anyone from getting seriously hurt or injured. After taking a quick look viewers could see the shock in members of the audience’s faces after having just seen this unfold in front of them.

This isn’t the first MMA promotion to experience this kind of issue with it becoming a regular occurrence among some amateur organisations. However, there is a serious need to crack down on any violence occurring before they fighters’ step inside the cage.

The video can be found here.

Need For Security At MMA Press Conferences

Although some pushing and shoving at a press conference would seem normal to most as not long after the two facing off against each other will step inside a cage to try and take the other man’s head off. There does need to be more done to prevent MMA fighters from having these altercations.

UFC President Dana White spoke on this issue following the incident with Jeremy Stephens and Drakkar Close which saw the pair’s matchup cancelled due to an injury picked up by Klose at the press conference.

“There is a rule,” White said. “That’s why we’re there. Sean Shelby missed that one. Sean and I see this thing differently. I saw it on social media and called him immediately. “I saw the thing happen on social media and I called Sean and I was like, ‘Where was your head on that one?’ He was coming in hot and it’s Jeremy Stephens, he’s a savage.

“I mean, we’re not standing there to look good and take pictures. We’re there to make sure that doesn’t happen.” (Transcribed by Dailystar.com)

What can be done to stop these incidents from occurring?

RIZE Fighting Championship, a regional MMA event that took place on March 20th at the Bamboo Room in Lake Worth Beach erupted into complete chaos after the crowd decided to get in on the action.

The event is currently under investigation by the Palm Beach County Sherriff’s Office after a man fired off several shots from a handgun into the air.

Former UFC and Bellator fighter Hector Lombard happened to be in attendance, simply as a spectator. He caught much of the melee on camera, as well as one of the gunshots on camera. The videos have since been posted by TMZ. They show much of the crowd fighting outside of the cage, with one man firing a pistol into the air, possibly in an attempt to stop the fighting. Lombard also posted the following statement on Instagram:

“This guy just shot his handgun in the middle of a melee at an amateur show. Shameful and pathetic cowardly behaviour ruined a great night of fights.”

According to TMZ, no one was hit by the gunfire. However, paramedics were needed to assist those who had been injured in the melee. No official arrests have yet been made, but there is currently an investigation going on in attempt to identify the man with the firearm.

Nice guys don’t always finish last. Look at Daniel Cormier.

UFC President Dana White refunded the double champ’s front-row tickets to UFC 229 after he helped diffuse the crazy scene.

“DC” jumped into action as all hell broke loose around him and his family as they sat cageside. His teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov had just submitted Conor McGregor in the most watched fight in MMA history.

If only it had ended there. The story is old hat by now. Khabib scaled the cage like a mountain cat and lept at McGregor’s coaching staff, namely primary antagonist Dillon Danis. During this week’s episode of The MMA Hour, Cormier gave the fans his point of view on the now-infamous night.

Through “DC’s” Eyes

“I was trying to go up to talk to him and they kept pushing me,” Cormier recalled (transcript via MMA Mania). “But, he kept telling them, ‘This is my captain, let him through.’ So when I finally got close enough to him I told him, ‘Hey, what in the world is going on? What are you doing? You have got to calm down.”

“And he said, ‘Okay captain, give me my belt.’ The dude was worked up. I have honestly never seen him act like that.”

Respectable by anyone’s standards – Cormier doesn’t expect handouts or freebies. The double champ actually paid for his tickets to UFC 229. Cageside seats are not cheap, especially for an event of UFC 229’s caliber. However, White did reimburse “DC” for his selfless action in helping calm the melee down.

It Pays To Be Good

“I buy tickets. I buy tickets for my kids to go to the fights. We were given tickets and I buy tickets and then the whole fight happens. Then Dana calls me back and says, ‘We are giving you your money back because you helped us calm everybody down. We can’t charge you for tickets.’”

You can’t argue with that. Sometimes it does pay off to be a nice guy. After all, “DC” has done pretty darn well for himself in winning the heavyweight and light heavyweight championships.

Cormier will face Derrick Lewis in the main event of November 3’s UFC 230.

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey didn’t get a chance to watch UFC 229, but she sure hasn’t missed the aftermath.

Now WWE Raw Women’s Champion, Rousey recently spoke to TMZ on the now-infamous UFC 229 melee. She was accompanied by her husband and former Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter Travis Browne. As usual, Rousey wasn’t afraid to say her piece.

Rousey’s UFC 229 Thoughts

“I understand promoting fights and having to sell them,” said Rousey. “I really do, I get it. But I don’t think people have to get arrested in order to do that. I think I’ve been able to prove that you can make a fight exciting and make people really wanna see it without crossing any legal lines.

“But I’m glad it was a great match. I’m sorry it’s kind of soured by the aftermath. Their performances aren’t going to get enough credit because of what happened and I really hope it doesn’t become an ongoing trend. I want people to feel safe bringing their kids to fights.”

Its impossible to point the finger at one person. Yes, Khabib Nurmagomedov lept over the cage and pandemonium ensued, but as Khabib pointed during the post-fight press conference his actions were a direct result of months of disrespect from Conor McGregor.

The lack of punishment by the UFC is another area of discontent. Rousey believes the Brooklyn bus incident was a far greater offense. One that essentially went unchecked by the UFC.

Rousey On Equal Treatment

“I think that Khabib jumping out of the octagon was not as bad as throwing objects at a bus because my friend Rose Namajunas was on that bus. My friend, Michael Chiesa, missed his fight because [he suffered an injured from broken glass],” said Rousey. “So I just feel like there has to be equal treatment all the way across the board. I don’t think that anyone should get special treatment because they’re a bigger draw.

“I think that’s the same when it comes to performance-enhancing drugs when it comes to felonies when it comes to hit and runs or anything like that, I think there’s too much preferential treatment given to high-profile fighters. There needs to be equal discipline across the board because people are going to start thinking that once they get to a certain level then the rules don’t apply for them.”

Nurmagomedov’s $2 million dollar fight purse is still being withheld by the Nevada State Athletic Commision pending a full investigation. However, McGregor did receive his $3 million dollar payday. Although both men were issued temporary suspensions pending the completion of the NSAC’s investigation.

“I would be much more strict about everything. I say you get popped for steroids once, you’re banned for life. You know, but then again I’m not the promoter of a multi-million dollar organization. It’s just – you have to think about, you know, from their perspective when is it not worth it anymore? I don’t want the company to be prioritizing this quarter over the next 10 years.

“I don’t want it to get to the point where people are not buying tickets to go see fights live, because they are afraid of what could happen in the arena.”

Nate Diaz Trolls Dana White Over Khabib Teammate Drama

The MMA universe was dealt some surprising news when lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov threatened to leave the UFC if they released his teammate Zubaira Tukhugov. Now it’s apparently time Nate Diaz sounds off on the Khabib teammate drama.

Tukhugov was one of Khabib’s teammates who climbed into the Octagon to scuffle with Conor McGregor after the Irishman was submitted by “The Eagle” at UFC 229. He was arrested but released when McGregor refused to press charges. But Tukhugov wasn’t out of the woods. UFC President Dana White said he and the other two assailants would never fight in the UFC again.

That didn’t stop Tukhugov from boasting that he ‘slapped McGregor as promised’ online. Tukhugov was then removed from his UFC Moncton match-up with McGregor’s teammate Artem Lobov.

Fear not, Nate Diaz has an idea to fix this mess. He tweeted to White this afternoon that they should let “Kabob’s” friend fight and release him instead:

An interesting take from the always-entertaining fan favorite. Diaz was set to return from an over two-year layoff to face Dustin Poirier at November 3’s UFC 230. That bout fell apart when ‘The Diamond’ pulled out with an undisclosed injury this week.

Diaz was removed from the NYC event as a result. He proclaimed he was ready to face Nurmagomedov for the UFC title. The youngest Diaz brother is often at odds with the UFC in their seemingly never-ending power struggle over money.

How that will factor into the Khabib drama remains to be seen. One thing is for certain, though. Diaz knows how to keep himself relevant despite not having a victory in the Octagon since March 2016.
